Our Commissioner President performs several key duties for our county by (1) setting the agenda for each Board meeting, (2) leading the discussion on various issues requiring debate and decision, (3) calling for a motion from the other Commissioners, and (4) from time to time casting a tie-breaking vote on matters of significant importance to local government and our citizens.
This is a unique role requiring an in-depth knowledge of how government works, ways to frame particular issues for presentation and discussion, and a keen ability to strive for consensus on crucial issues or problems. Intelligence, experience, tact and diplomacy are qualities of the type of successful leader that will perform this key role on behalf of all the citizens of St. Mary’s.
Our Commissioner President must be able to feel the pulse of the community, be a good listener and communicator, and be able to .work hard and be nice! He or she must have a solid knowledge of the history of our county, a foresight to see downstream for decades to come, a track record as a good steward of the environment, and fiscal prudence when it comes to spending someone else’s money. These are the unique skills and qualities I offer to the people of St. Mary’s. Although I’ve visited every state in our country and traveled abroad on its behalf as well as for pleasure, I’ve always called this area my home.
Since birth I’ve resided within 70 miles of where my wife and I live on Cuckold Creek in Hollywood. I’m one of eight children and I came from a family that knew very well what its like to struggle to make ends meet. Family values run deep. I know what its like to struggle ... and I know what its like to succeed; I’ve done both.
Things do not happen. Things are made to happen.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.
In 1962 I graduated from high school with a 4.0 GPA, a college scholarship, and an awaiting job. Five days later I had registered with the Selective Service System and was working as a clerk-typist at the Interior Department.
I quickly worked my way up the ranks in the civil service and applied myself scholastically in college.
I became a Certified Public Accountant, a real estate broker, and a graduate of Benjamin Franklin University, the University of Maryland (MGA), and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
Rosemary and I have been married for 42 years and have three adult children and three lovely grandchildren. During a career of more than 32 years I’ve served in just about every type of accounting and financial management position at the Departments of the Interior and Commerce.
At the Pacific Northwest Regional Commission I was the chief administrative official providing economic development assistance to the Governors of Washington, Oregon and Idaho on behalf of a Presidentially-appointed Co-chairman.
In the Nixon and Carter administrations I worked very closely with Republican and Democratic officials at the Federal, state and local levels developing and administering successful programs throughout the Pacific Northwest and its towns, communities and school systems. Afterwards, I returned to Interior as Financial Manager for the Secretary, and headed the office where I first began my accounting career. I served as Associate Director of Administration under President Reagan administering youth programs nearing $1 billion on a national scale. I’ve developed Presidential initiatives, represented them before the Congress, and implemented them. Throughout my life I’ve been a good listener and communicator.
I’ve been able to turn desires into accomplishments ... and I’ve been very good at gaining consensus and getting things done.
I’m blessed to live on the water. My many years of service at Interior and time spent in the wilds of our country have instilled a great love and respect for the environment and our heritage.
I’m proud to say that I’ve never accepted one cent from anyone as a political campaign contribution.
As a candidate ... and if elected ... you can be sure that there will be no appearance of improper influence and that I will faithfully represent the public’s interests. I was blessed to have some of the greatest teachers throughout a lifetime of learning that never ends. I still remember the all too often heard remark: You can be anything you want to be.
I am a product of inspired educators.
Although we have many challenges before us, education remains the mainspring of our economic and social progress. It is the highest expression of achievement in our society, ennobling and enriching human life ... and a priority in the years ahead. I respectfully request your vote in the coming elections.
