D. C.  Recovers More Firearms, Sees Fewer Traffic Fatalities in 2004

In 2003 some 1,982 firearms were recovered in the city. In 2004 the figure rose to approximately 2,071. Last year (2004) an average of 5.67 guns were recovered daily. The first two days of 2005 indicates that the figure has doubled with the recovery of some 22 firearms.

Of the preliminary figure of 198 homicides for 2004, 153 of those were committed with firearms. The department has increased its efforts in the removal of firearms from city streets in its continuing effort to combat the violence related to guns. Anyone with information about illegal guns is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099 or they may call the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives tip line at 1-800-ATF-GUNS.
