State Auditor Refers Land Deal Between

St. Mary's College and  Mike O'Brien

for Criminal Probe

(The short version: Mike O'Brien, a member of the College Board of Trustees, bought 2 parcels of land, near the College, in 2005 for $245,00 and then in the middle of the worst drop in real estate values in history, sold them for $800,000 to St. Mary's College. O'Brien, not the college, came up with two appraisals showing the property had somehow miraculously soared in value to over $1 million. Both appraisals came from appraisers who do a lot of business with O'Brien Realty and both appraisals ignored the drop in value.  In addition, the College gave O'Brien a letter noting his "donation" of $825,000, the fictitious value over the $800,000 that the College paid for his land)

Probe comes nearly 2 years after Comptroller questioned purchase that put $800,000 into pocket of trustee while property values plummeted.  Comptroller Peter Franchot voted no on the deal.

Bay District fire engine spins out of control on bright, sunny day, wipes out traffic signal, four firefighters shook up, checked out and released.
This wreck is likely due to the driver failing to control his speed, but Bay District has done an amazing job responding to calls without any serious wrecks.  The last Bay District fire truck observed out of commission was when one got stuck in a ditch on Park Hall Road in Hermanville at a house fire. While the cost of the smashed traffic signal will surely exceed $100,000, the volunteers of Bay District provide a great service to the community, around the clock, all year long. But it doesn't do much good to volunteer if rescue and fire apparatus don't actually make it to the emergency.

Nine Hours to Richmond?

 Amtrak Train Finally Unstuck

And Obama and Steny Hoyer want the government to run your health care the way they run passenger train service...be sure to read comments from passengers who were stuck on this train that broke down just minutes out of Washington...kept prisoner in the train, passengers called 911 for help and held up signs in the windows...Amtrak passed out packets of oatmeal and water...all of this took place just a half mile from station....if Members of Congress had been on the train, it would have been airlifted to safety!  Work rules contributed to mess, when the crew on train with broken engine exceeded their time limit for hours worked and a new crew had to be sent to the stranded train! Can't federal rules be suspended in an emergency?

Heroes at work --- Rescue workers pulled out 133 injured people from the Knickerbocker Theatre located at 18th Street and Columbia Road NW in Washington on Jan. 28, 1922 when the roof collapsed during the worst blizzard to ever hit the nation's capital.  98 people died when the roof of the 5 year old building collapsed under the weight of the heavy snow.  Just three years ago flat-roof buildings caved in during a heavy ice and snow storm, leaving the Eckerd Drug building in Waldorf, a clothing store and a Toys R Us in PG County all in ruins.

from Roof After Cave-In

A crew of workers shoveled snow from the roof of the Land Use and Growth Management building in Leonardtown, also where the St. Mary's Sheriff's headquarters is located, along with the treasurer and recreation and parks offices.   ST. MARY'S TODAY photo
Official Sagging Sends Staff Fleeing

Roof sags over St. Mary's County Land Use offices, entire building including Treasurer's Office and Sheriff's Headquarters evacuated....did the county screw up it's own building which should have been built to code?  Did the county govt. bother to clear snow off it's flat roof?   Will taxpayers have to pay any taxes while the Treasurer is out in the cold?   Answers to these and other questions coming up....

This crew shoveling snow from the top of the Hickory Hills Shopping Center in California was a little less active than the crew on top of the county office building.  A large majority of the buildings in the area have flat roofs and with more snow coming to add to the weight, more buildings can be expected to have cave-ins. In Leonardtown and Lexington Park, these were the only two buildings observed that had crews working to clear snow.  ST. MARY'S TODAY photo
