Boatman's
Casino Shut Down

These slot
machines in Boatman's Casino are now part of the history
of St. Mary's County;
our 'Winter of the Slot Machines'. ST.
MARY'S TODAY photo
OAKVILLE (March 24,
2008) --- St. Mary's Sheriff Tim Cameron reports that
the Boatman's Mini Mart and Casino has lost its slot
machines when the distributor of the machines voluntary
withdrew the machines it had placed in Boatman's Mini
Mart in Oakville. The store, which functions as a
neighborhood liquor store is still open for regular
business but the hey days of $10,000 a week rolling
through in an unregulated and unmonitored fashion are
over.
Sheriff Mike Evans of Calvert County reports that the
machines in Chesapeake Beach will be outlawed under the
proposed new emergency legislation but that county has
set up gambling commission to monitor the placement of
the original "instant bingo" machines which were allowed
by a 2001 Court of Appeals ruling. The law
outlawing slots in the area which passed the Senate on a
45 -2 vote last week is pending before the House of
Delegates and amendments to the bill may address the
Calvert machines placed in Traders, Abners and the Rod n
Reel, but it is likely they will all be ditched under
the new legislation.

Should
Maryland doctors be allowed to conduct
state-of-the-art
CT scans for their patients?

St.
Mary's Commissioner Tommy Mattingly with Dr. Vinny Shah
testified
in favor of allowing doctors to conduct CT
scans in their offices instead
of sending patients to
radiologists. Maryland is the only state
which does
not allow office scans. Mattingly said
that chest pains led him to go for a
scan last month
which led to a stent being implanted in an artery to
keep
it open, and that as a patient, he wants
information from a scan as soon
as possible. Shah said
that he has trouble recruiting new doctors to the
area
who know that they cannot use all of the latest tools
available to
help their patients. The
radiologist's lobbyist said that for doctors to
have
in-house scan services is a conflict of interest and a
way for docs
to drive up the bill for health care
without any scrutiny. ST. MARY'S TODAY photo

Overnight Stay on Cold Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE BAY (March 24,
2008) --- Engine failure between Tangier Island and
Smith Island left this man with his 16' boat as his
overnight motel, anchored for the night. Boats
from Coast Guard Station Crisfield, Virginia Marine
police and Maryland Natural Resources Police
crisscrossed the area while a Coast Guard chopper from
Coast Guard Station Atlantic City, New Jersey, looked
for him without success on Saturday night and a first
light search found the man at Easter sunrise. This
photo from the Coast Guard chopper shows a rescue vessel
preparing to tow the man to shore. He was identified as
David Pruitt, 56, of Tangier Island. Pruitt would have
benefited from a marine radio, said the Coast Guard.
Flares and other emergency supplies would have narrowed
his overnight stay on his small boat in the choppy
Chesapeake.

promoted her over

his wife, marry his girlfriend just in time for the lovechild to be born
