HUNTINGTOWN --- Calvert Sheriff's spokesman Jeanine Howard reports that on Sunday March 26 at approximately 3:30 p.m. Animal Control Officer J. Vitale with the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office was called to an address on Harvey Road in Huntingtown for an animal attack on a human.  Medical personnel on the scene tending to a 7-year-old boy advised ACO Vitale that he had been attacked by a neighbor’s Rottweiler while playing in their yard.  The juvenile son of the dog owner informed his mother that the dog jumped over the pen fence, which is four feet in height, and bit the boy as the two children were playing in the yard.  The injured seven year old was flown to Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.   Injuries to the child consisted of severe bites to the ear and multiple bite wounds around the head and face.  The Rottweiler was surrendered by the owner to the Calvert County Animal Control Officer and will be held at the Tri-County Animal Shelter for a 10-day quarantine for any signs of the rabies virus.  The dog is current on his rabies vaccine.  At the conclusion of the 10 days, the animal will be destroyed.

It was Friday night in Sin City and a knife fight left a man near death...
Police say 3 fought, 3 were stabbed, 3 were taken to hospitals but only one is going to be charged
LEXINGTON PARK (Feb. 12, 2006) ---  A fight outside the 2000 Liquors in Lexington Park led to 3 men suffering from stab wounds on Friday night, reports St. Mary's Sheriff's Lt. Daniel Alioto.  Two men accosted a third man, say police, and the trio apparently all suffered from knife wounds with one man's wounds being potentially life-threatening, due to the serious wounds to the man's lungs and possible resulting infection.  That man, Adam Christopher Kelson, 26, of Lexington Park, was taken to PG Shock Trauma in serious condition with stab wounds to his chest and back.  Eugene Curtis, 30, also of Lexington Park, was taken by ambulance to St. Mary's Hospital where he was treated for a stab wound to the forearm and released.  Clark Marcell Rich, 45, was flown to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda where he was treated and released.  He was stabbed in the back, say police.  Lt. Alioto reports that witnesses fled the scene and police would like to talk them.  Police found a knife "at the end of the end of a bloody path" .

McKay Loses Out on 4-1 Vote on How to Expand Jail
At a budget work session on Monday, St. Mary's Commissioner Tom Mattingly (D. Leonardtown) proposed a plan to expand the county's jail without the fluff and unneeded extra cells for females who constitute a small proportion of inmates which was favored by Sheriff David Zylak or the large scale plan favored by Commissioner Tommy McKay (R. Hollywood).  Mattingly's plan won by a 4-1 vote, leaving McKay fuming.  McKay can't stop trying to turn a political trick on transportation problems with yet another swipe at the new law passed by the General Assembly and sponsored by Sen. Dyson which sets up a comprehensive transportation study for Southern Maryland.
Board defends policy of shutting out public from viewing budget process

Its all about how they spend your money, from Leonardtown to Annapolis, the budget busters are ready to wreak havoc on your wallet and in Leonardtown the board of commissioners shuts down the TV cameras when the budget is discussed.  The county administrator says that the county department heads are "uncomfortable" talking about their plans for spending.   Tommy "Hambone" McKay told ST. MARY'S TODAY on Monday when asked why he was shutting down the TV cameras when budget discussions start, that not all proceedings in Annapolis are televised.  Commissioner Larry Jarboe's cop-out is that McKay sets the agenda.  What is the board afraid of that they would block live coverage of budget discussions with the staff as the budget is formulated?

Lt. Deputies Help Senior in Distress

DAMERON ---  A firetruck following a driver weaving all over the roadway along Rt. 235 called for police leading to a deputy following the drifty driver on Monday evening.  The officer then reported that the driver was not drunk but simply elderly...A very elderly woman (turns out she was only 75) was headed home to Washington and told the officer she didn't know where she was when he was finally able to pull her over near Trappe Road. This story had a happy ending when deputies and 911 staff contacted family of the woman who warned them that she had possible medical problems which resulted in an medic being called to assist her.  The firefighters who observed her erratic driving and the actions of the deputies in attempting to remove a possible drunk driver from the roads ended up in assisting a senior citizen in distress.  Hats off to the Sheriff's deputies who helped this little old lady from Washington, D.C.!

Norris Ready to Rumble!
JENKS PLANS TO JUMP

LEONARDTOWN - St. Mary's County Treasurer Jan Norris says she is running for re-election and plans a hard-fought race for another four year term.  The courthouse incumbent Democrats are all expected to win re-election as the three veteran office holders, Clerk of the Circuit Court Evelyn Arnold, Norris and Register of Wills Diane McWilliams, all run professional offices which meet with high levels of satisfaction from the public.  Even though Republicans put on good races for Register of Wills and Clerk in the last election, the GOP simply folded up and went away after the last election while the Democrats rolled up their sleeves and went to work.   Jenks Mattingly is also ready to file for Judge of the Orphans Court as a Democrat, after his losing race as an Independent in 2002.  Incumbent Democrats Linda Dean and Russ Cullins are expected to run again and Mattingly is likely to knock out Republican Judge Dalton Wood.  Jenks is fit from a fight with cancer and is back in top church supper eating form, filling out his ample girth with plenty of vote-getting power. A freshly energized Democratic Party, more mindful of its conservative roots, is expected to fight back hard this year at GOP gains at the local level.   Stay tuned!

Mike Stamm Sworn in to Appointment as Circuit Court Judge but who paid for the shrimp?  Judge is the title for the lackluster attorney picked by Gov. Bob Ehrlich to be the placeholder for the winner of this year's election for the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Marvin Kaminetz.  Two candidates have filed thus far, former States Attorney George Sparling and former GOP Central Committee Chairman Shane Mattingly.  Deputy States Attorney Teddy Weiner and former Deputy States Attorney Christy Chesser are both preparing to toss their hats in the ring.  Stamm's sudden collection of friends filled one courtroom while the swearing in was broadcast over closed circuit TV to the adjacent courtroom where the lesser of those invited were seated.  Then the whole crowd adjourned to the Seafarers resort at Piney Point where they feasted on shrimp until they ran out of food.  So who paid for the food and the open bar?  Likely it was the first step in the campaign and the costs ought to show up on Stamm's campaign report.   So how much was the shrimp?  Only The Shadow knows for sure!

Biker Bedlam
Outlaw killer bikers from Iron Horsemen showed up once again in St. Mary's County, just one week after nearly beating to death a man at Toots Bar in Sandy Bottom, this time, they just sauntered in unopposed by the St. Mary's Sheriff's Dept., which didn't even have a single patrol unit near the Moose Lodge in Mechanicsville.  The outlaw killers who beat to death a man at the Mousetrap in 1997, were displaying their colors and sashaying around the benefit fundraiser with not a single cop in sight.  Where were the St. Mary's Sheriff's deputies and the Maryland State Police?  Are all of the police officials, from Maryland State Police Superintendent Col. Tim Hutchins and St. Mary's Sheriff David Zylak paralyzed between the ears?  Where is the police protection from these roving bands of outlaw bikers?  What is all this crap about Homeland Security when the cops can't even protect us from bums on bikes whipping flashlights and padlocks around as tools of death?  Fortunately, we have elections to bring about change and this is an election year.....

Police Escort for Funeral of Drug Dealer Who Attempted Murder of Police Officers is Outrageous

Great Mills Blight Provided by Two Premier Local Oil Firms
Each year Southern Maryland Oil and Besche Oil companies set the standard on contributing to the communities they serve in the region but when they close down unprofitable gas stations such as this former Besche Quick Mart on Great Mills Road and the old SMO Dash In Texaco at rear of this photo, they allow their properties to become eyesores, to deteriorate with boarded up windows, overgrown parking lots and even in the case of SMO, they left a huge hole in the ground where they yanked out the underground gas tanks.  The owners of these firms are politically influential, lining the pockets of politician's campaign funds so don't look for anyone in public office to question why these two firms allow their properties to violate zoning codes until someone comes along to buy them.  Now SMO is degrading the Rt. 235 Technology Corridor with another of its failed Dash In stores, one that they allowed to operate without a proper liquor license until the local liquor board revoked the license and SMO closed the location, just a year after an expensive remodeling job.  Watch for this location to become an eyesore until its use changes or is sold. In contrast, the Burch Oil Company closed a BP station on Rt. 235 in Lexington Park but didn't board it up. The Wills and Besche families have supported all manner of educational, charitable and worthy groups all over the area but when it comes to slummy property management, they are the kings....see more in this weekend's print edition...why does the St. Mary's County Land Use office permit this violation of land use laws?  Where are the inspectors, why do the eyesores continue to degrade the region while public funds are spent to upgrade the area around the Patuxent River Naval Air Station?  Where are the Navy Alliance folks, why doesn't the Chamber of Commerce care about these long-term blights?  Because all of the business fat cats play footsie, golf and schmooze together and it would be impolite to mention the local slumlords....

Great Mills Road eyesore has been gathering weeds and adding that slum look to the area for more than five years, making the owners of this property members of our new
