Two Teens Charged in
Babendreier Murder
Teen attempting to buy drugs from suspects
is robbed and killed

ROCKVILLE (June 17, 2005) --- Montgomery County Police Detectives in the Major Crimes Division – Homicide and Sex Section announce two arrests from their investigation into the June 12, 2005, homicide of Ezekiel Oak Babendreier, age 18, of the 10600 block of Radstock Court in Damascus.
The suspect who stabbed Babendreier turned himself into detectives late last night. Tristen Michael Bryant, age 18, of the 12100 block of Songbird Lane in Germantown, was charged with First-degree Murder, two counts of Armed Robbery, two counts of Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery, and First-degree Assault. Suspect Davonte Odell Sharpe, who was armed with a handgun at the time of the incident, was taken into custody at his home late yesterday afternoon. Sharpe, age 15, also of the 12100 block of Songbird Lane in Germantown, was charged as an adult with First-degree Murder, two counts of Armed Robbery, two counts of Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery, and First-degree Assault. They are both being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center on a no bond status. A bond hearing is expected today at 1:00 p.m.
Through the course of the investigation it was learned that Babendreier and a male acquaintance were approached by three suspects in a chance encounter on Canterfield Terrace after the victim and acquaintance had left a party being held at a residence on Canterfield Terrace. The suspects were not guests at the party Babendreier and his acquaintance were attending, and it is believed that they were in the neighborhood looking for a different party.
The victims, who had left the party briefly, encountered the three suspects at the end of the driveway. There was a brief conversation regarding a party and drugs. Babendreier asked the suspects if they had marijuana available to purchase. The suspects indicated they had drugs in a car down the street. The victims confirmed to the suspects that they had cash. One of the suspects drove away at that time.
As they walked in the area of the 22300 block of Canterfield Way, the victims became suspicious when the suspects didn’t take them to a car. The third suspect, who had driven away, returned in the same car. Sharpe took a gun from the car and robbed Babendreier’s acquaintance of cash at gunpoint. Bryant produced a knife, and a physical struggle ensued during which Babendreier was stabbed and robbed of his wallet. All three suspects left in a vehicle described at the time as a black four-door sedan. It was later learned to be a black four-door KIA Optima.
Babendreier was pronounced dead from his injuries at an area hospital. The acquaintance was not injured.
There is no evidence at this stage of the investigation to indicate the suspects were known to either the victim or his acquaintance, or that this incident was racially motivated.
The investigation into the third suspect continues. He is described as a black male between the ages of 18 and 22, and was the driver of the KIA Optima.

BALTIOMRE (MAY 11, 2005) On May 10, 2005, standing beneath the Thurgood
Marshall Memorial Statue, Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr., signed into law HB 189,
sponsored by Delegate Emmett C. Burns, Jr., renaming Baltimore-Washington International
Airport to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Marshall, a
Baltimore native, was a pioneering black civil rights lawyer and was the first African
American named to the United States Supreme Court.
"Thurgood Marshall had a well-deserved reputation of giving voice to the
voiceless," said Governor Ehrlich. "Today, we give a new name to an airport that
serves hundreds of millions every year. This is an historic day for Maryland and a proud
day for the family, friends and colleagues of Thurgood Marshall."
Thurgood Marshall was born in Baltimore , Maryland, on July 2, 1908. In 1954, he argued
against school segregation before the U.S. Supreme Court in the landmark case of Brown
v. Board of Education of Topeka. He was the first African American chosen for the
U.S. Supreme Court in 1967. Justice Marshall served on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1967 to
1991. Justice Marshall died on January 24, 1993. "Thurgood Marshall was an
extraordinary man, leader, and a great American," said Lt. Governor Steele.
"With this tremendous honor, Marylanders and airport visitors from around the world
will have the opportunity to reflect on Thurgood Marshall's life and legacy."
ANNAPOLIS (MAY 11, 2005) Take note Maryland anglers: The Maryland
Department of Natural Resources (DNR) yesterday announced that it will be hosting its
first major sportfishing tournament in more than 20 years. The Maryland $1,000,000
Fishing Challenge will run from sunup on Friday, June 3 to sundown on Monday,
July 18, and is sponsored by Boaters World and the Maryland Department of
Business and Economic Development (DBED). Through the Maryland $1,000,000 Fishing
Challenge, DNR hopes to demonstrate the productivity, diversity and value of its
fisheries resources, while at the same time generating excitement for fishing in Maryland.
"Its amazing what people will do, eat or perform for a million dollars these
days just watch any of the reality television shows," said C. Ronald Franks,
DNR Secretary. "We thought offering people the chance to win $1 million while doing
something as fun and close to home as fishing on the Bay would be the perfect way for them
to seize the day in Maryland."
The Maryland $1,000,000 Fishing Challenge is open to everyone who is legally
licensed to fish in Maryland, fishing in one of Marylands License Free Fishing Areas, or fishing
on one of Marylands three Free
Fishing Days (June 4, 11 and July 4). There is no registration required, no fee
to participate and no age restrictions. Youth anglers are encouraged to try and
catch one of hundreds of tagged striped bass, Atlantic croaker, largemouth bass and white
perch that will be released into the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Anglers who catch
one of the specially tagged fish will be entered into a drawing to play for the $1 million
prize on Saturday, July 23. Individual fish may also be worth an immediate prize.
"It's the fun and excitement that draws fishermen to fishing tournaments, as well as
the pride of catching a big fish and the thrill of winning big money. Having a chance to
win $1 million is indescribable for a fisherman," said Jay Jolly, Vice President of
Boater's World Marine Centers. "We are thrilled to be sponsoring such an innovative
and unique fishing tournament.
Each year our company sponsors over 100 tournaments across the country because they get
fishermen to go fishing. The Maryland $1,000,000 Fishing Challenge will be one of our
biggest events of the year and is guaranteed to get fishermen out on the water."
Sport fishing tournaments have a long tradition on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. The
vast majority of these tournaments have been privately sponsored. Some are held for fun,
others to challenge skill and ability, and still others for the chance to compete for
prizes and money. Anglers may remember the Catch a Fortune Contest or Governors Cup
Challenge of the 1980s a few may recall "Diamond Jim," which offered a
cash prize of $25,000 in the late 1950s. These contests were highly popular, and the
concept of a contest for a big money fish is even more appealing today.
"Fishing is an important recreational opportunity for our visitors and residents to
enjoy. We look forward to many more visitors Seizing the Day Off to enjoy not
only fishing, but the many great other recreational opportunities that Maryland has to
offer," said Dennis M. Castleman, Assistant Secretary of Tourism, Film and the Arts.
DNR has created a special content area on its DNR Online website for the Maryland
$1,000,000 Fishing Challenge, http://www.dnr.maryland.gov/fish4cash/
that includes everything from contest rules and FAQs, to how and where to fish in Maryland
and why its important to use circle hooks. In addition, bait and tackle and other
fishing-related businesses are encouraged to be a part of the Challenge by becoming fish
sponsors. Anyone interested can also find that information on the Challenge web page.
