$5.1 Million In Recovery
Dollars to Purchase
49 Buses for Local Transit
Systems
14 new buses come to
Southern Maryland
ANNAPOLIS, MD
(March 23, 2009) – The Board
of Public Works has approved
the use of $5.1 million in
federal recovery funds (Your
tax dollars) to
purchase replacement buses
for local transit operations
throughout the State. The
funding comes from President
Barack Obama’s American
Recovery and Reinvestment
Act (ARRA).
“As a result
of President Obama’s
leadership we are able to
buy an additional 49 buses
to assist locally operated
transit systems in counties
and municipalities across
Maryland,” said Governor
O’Malley. “Today’s BPW
approval comes less than 30
days after the President
signed the recovery bill.
It builds on the strong
momentum already underway in
Maryland to get projects out
the door to preserve jobs
and address our
transportation needs.”
With the $5.1
million in ARRA funding, the
Maryland Transit
Administration will purchase
30 small buses and 19
medium-sized buses. The
vehicles will be provided to
local transit systems to
replace aging equipment
currently in the fleet.
Some buses will be used to
provide traditional transit
service while others will be
configured to provide
paratransit service. A
chart showing the
distribution of the 49
vehicles, by county, is
attached.
Within 24
hours of President Obama
signing the ARRA on February
17th, Governor
O’Malley announced Phase I
of Maryland’s “ready to go”
transportation recovery
projects totaling $365
million. As a result, the
resurfacing of New Hampshire
Avenue in Montgomery County
that is now underway became
the first transportation
recovery project in the
nation approved by the
Federal Highway
Administration. Maryland’s
first transit improvement,
rehabilitation work at the
Laurel MARC station, is also
now under construction.
As of this
week, the State Highway
Administration has
advertised all 70 state road
and bridge projects included
in Phase I. Governor
O’Malley announced Phase II
transportation projects this
week. The first of those
projects will be advertised
for bids next week. All
totaled, the ARRA will
provide Maryland with $610
million for transportation
projects, an investment that
is projected to support up
to 17,000 jobs.
