OWINGS ---- A blaze which fire marshals ruled was set on purpose
burned an Owings home early on Sunday, May 27th, injuring two
Dunkirk Volunteer firefighters and one resident of the house
which was intentionally set afire.
A posse of Maryland State Fire Marshals and a special arson dog
were sent to the scene on Kip Drive in Owings after firefighters
doused the blaze which started at about 5:15 am.
State Fire Marshal Joe Zurolo told ST. MARY’S TODAY that the
house which was set on fire has people coming and going at all
hours of the day and night and investigators are still
interviewing those who had been at the home or were living at
the single family dwelling for information.
“We are not releasing information on how the fire started in
order to protect the investigation,” said Zurolo.
Joyce Smallwood, 59, a resident of the house, suffered from
smoke inhalation and firefighters Allen Marcellas and Scott
Peterson suffered burns and lacerations in the fire. All were
taken by ambulance to Calvert Memorial Hospital where they were
treated and released.
The fire began on the living room floor, say investigators, and
responding units arrived from North Beach, Lothian, Dunkirk and
Huntingtown and Deale.
