PRINCE FREDERICK (Feb. 22, 2010) --- Police working drug enforcement in Calvert County report that on February 19 the Calvert County Drug Enforcement Unit received information that a subject would be entering the county who was in possession of a quantity of a controlled dangerous substance, cocaine. Members of the DEU, which consists of Calvert County Sheriff’s Office deputies and a Maryland State trooper, set up surveillance along Md. Route 4 in an attempt to locate the suspected vehicle.At approximately 12:40 a.m. DEU members located the vehicle travelling southbound on Md. Route 4 and began following the vehicle as it continued south on Md. Rt. 4. As the vehicle entered Plum Point Road an unmarked Sheriff's Office vehicle conducted a traffic stop. Located within the vehicle were the driver, Denise Rice, 19 and Cephus Travis Hutchins, 31.
Cpl. Todd Smith of the Calvert County Sheriff's Office, along with his Narcotic detection K-9 Keloh, conducted a scan of the vehicle, a blue 2010 Nissan, and showed an alert to the presence of CDS.
Police say that a search of the vehicle failed to yield any drugs. A search of Cephus Hutchins' person revealed a Zip lock baggie containing numerous other baggies of suspected cocaine. A search of Rice was made with negative results. Hutchins, of Huntingtown, was taken to the Calvert County Detention Center and processed. Rice was interviewed and released pending review with the State Attorney's Office regarding charges.
Upon further inspection it was discovered that Hutchins possessed 3.5 grams of cocaine (powder) and approximately 30 grams of cocaine converted into its base form known as crack. All of this was packaged for sales. Det. Sarah Koller charged Hutchins with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a controlled dangerous substance, cocaine.
