Coast Guard Rescues Sinking Duck Hunter...ducking under waves from high wind

BALTIMORE - A Coast Guard crew came to the aid of a man and his dog whose vessel began taking on water this afternoon in the Pocomoke Sound.

At about 3 p.m. today, Coast Guard Sector Baltimore received a cell phone call from Wilbur Millagin reporting that his friend, Brad Taylor, was aboard a disabled 12-foot johnboat that was taking on water. Taylor and Millagin were duck hunting in the area on two separate boats when Taylor's boat lost power and began to take on water over the side due to the high wind. A rescue crew from Coast Guard Station Crisfield, Md., launched a 25-foot response boat and arrived on scene. The rescue crew was able to retrieve Taylor and his dog and dewater the vessel. The vessel was towed to a local boat ramp.

The Coast Guard urges boaters to have a marine band radio onboard their vessel. Not only are radios a more reliable way to communicate distress during an emergency, but they are also useful for monitoring weather conditions that may place a boater in danger.
