BALTIMORE - The Coast Guard rescued
five people south of the Bay Bridge in Annapolis,
Md., Sunday.
Coast Guard Sector Baltimore was
notified that five people aboard a 28-foot bayliner
were lost, seasick and the vessel was disabled. The
Coast Guard talked to the owner, An Tran, who said
they did not have a global position system (GPS)
onboard.
Sector Baltimore was able to get the vessels
position from T-Mobile using the cell phones signal.
A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Annapolis
arrived at 7 a.m. and towed the disabled vessel to
Pirates Cove Marina in the West River.
The Coast Guard urges mariners to
have and be familiar with operating marine band
radios and GPS's to aid rescue crews in locating
their vessels. Cell phones are an unreliable source
of communication due to gaps in coverage and limited
battery life. |
