Detroit, MI – The
U.S. Marshal led Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team
(DFAT) Task Force announces the arrest today of
Carol HartT for escape. Hart escaped from the now
defunct Detroit House of Corrections (DeHoCo) in
September of 1970.
Hart, then 23 years
old, was serving a 25 – 35 year sentence for assault
with intent to rob while armed after she and her
boyfriend fatally shot a World War II veteran after
a botched robbery attempt. She has been on the run
since.
Today, the Wexford
County Sheriff’s Department, working on information
developed by the U.S. Marshals led, DFAT Task Force,
arrested Hart after she identified herself to
officers using a bogus driver’s license in the name
of Carrie Lynn Fox. Hart initially denied her true
identity, but on the way to the Sheriff’s Office to
be fingerprinted, she confessed her identity stating
“I am too old to fight, I’m tired of running.”
Hart was living in
the small community of Manton, Michigan, with her
spouse. It is unclear as to whether or not her
husband knew she was a fugitive. It is believed that
she traveled to Florida with her children after the
escape and began a new life, obtaining a fraudulent
Social Security Card. Over the next 38 years, she is
believed to have lived in several states including
Nevada and North Carolina. In 2003, she and her
husband settled in the small town of Manton,
residing there since.
Hart will be
immediately returned to a Michigan Department of
Corrections (MDOC) Facility to finish serving her
sentence and will be arraigned on the escape charge
at a date and time to be determined.
U.S. Marshal Robert
Grubbs stated “This arrest once again demonstrates
that the key to success is cooperation … Federal,
State and Local. Even after 38 years, the victim’s
family has finally been able to get some closure, at
least as far as this fugitive is concerned.”
Annually, investigations carried out by the U.S.
Marshals results in the apprehension of
approximately 34,000 Federal fugitives. More Federal
fugitives are arrested by the Marshals than all
other Federal Agencies combined. |
