Fatal Snow Walk

Motorist runs down woman walking on roadway; hurls her into snowbank

CHARLOTTE HALL (Feb. 15, 2010) ---  Pedestrians have no where else to walk along roadways but in the roads.  Motorists who are out and about also have to use the roads so both need to exercise the caution that didn't happen on Sunday in Charlotte Hall when a woman was killed.  Pedestrians need to get out of the way when traffic is approaching and motorists need to go slow to avoid hurting or killing someone.

Police report that on February 14, 2010 at approximately 1844 hours a 2004 Toyota Tundra driven by Robert Nelson Jr., 40, of Charlotte Hall, Maryland was eastbound on Mohawk Drive just past Lakota Lane in Charlotte Hall, Maryland.  Nelson was traveling down the middle of the road, however the road is unlined.

Virginia Burch, 61, of Charlotte Hall, Maryland was walking eastbound on Mohawk Drive just past Lakota Lane on the westbound side of the road.

Burch was struck by the truck and thrown into an adjacent snow bank lining the road.  She was transported to Prince George's Shock Trauma by Maryland State Police Helicopter Trooper 7 where she succumbed to her injuries.

Police say that Nelson was not injured.  Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this collision.

Members of the St. Mary's County Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.  The investigation is continuing, anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact DFC Timothy Reese at 301-475-4200 ext. 9115.
