SALISBURY “CAPITAL FOR A DAY”
Local Leaders to Brief Governor, Cabinet on Priorities;
Governor, Cabinet to Spend the Day in Wicomico County with Local Counterparts
ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 21 , 2007) – On Monday, June 25, Governor Martin O’Malley and Lt. Governor Brown will spend the day in Salisbury, Maryland and declare Salisbury Maryland’s “Capital for a Day.” During their trip, the Governor and Lt. Governor will hold a Cabinet meeting, meet with local elected and community leaders, and tour a family farm that has been in operation for over a century.
Cabinet Secretaries from the O’Malley-Brown Administration will also spend the day in Salisbury and Wicomico County meeting with their local counterparts.
Governor O’Malley and Lt. Governor Brown will begin the day by holding a cabinet meeting at the American Legion-Wicomico Post 64. The first half-hour of the Cabinet meeting will be a regular Cabinet meeting, followed by an open meeting with local leaders including Mayor Barrie P. Tilghman, County Executive Rick Pollitt, Somerset County Commission President James Ring and Worcester County Commission President James Purnell.
During the meeting with Governor O’Malley and the Cabinet, local leaders will have the opportunity to present local priorities to state leaders and discuss challenges and opportunities for Salisbury and the region. The Cabinet meeting will begin at 10:00 at the American Legion-Wicomico Post 64, 1109 American Legion Road, Salisbury. Media will be allowed in for the open portion of the meeting with local leaders.
Afterwards Governor O’Malley, Lt. Governor Brown, and the Cabinet Secretaries will host a meet and greet in the American Legion building with regional community leaders and local elected officials. This event is closed to the press.
Following the meet and greet, Governor O’Malley, Lt. Governor Brown, and local officials will hold a press conference outside the American Legion Post at 11:30 a.m. to formally announce Salisbury as Maryland’s “Capital For A Day.”
Governor O’Malley and Lt. Governor Brown will then eat lunch with community leaders at 12:00 p.m. at the Market Street Inn, 130 W. Market Street, Salisbury. B-roll/still cameras will be allowed.
Monday afternoon, Governor O’Malley will take a tour of Marshall’s Riverbank Nursery, a century-old family farm in Salisbury. The tour will begin at 1:30 p.m. at 27573 Pemberton Drive, Salisbury.
In the afternoon, Maryland’s Cabinet secretaries will be meeting with their state and local partners. For example:
- Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene John Colmers will meet with Health Officers at the Wicomico County Health Department; Tour the Holly Center; and meet with the Deer’s Head Hospital Center Director and the Holly Center Director.
- Secretary of Transportation John Porcari will have lunch with Mike Pennington (DPW of Tri County Council and Acting Director of the Shore Transit Consortium), a briefing with Donnie Drewer (District 1 Engineer); and a meeting at District 1 Offices with Rai Sharmer (Wicomico County DPW Director), John Jacobs (Salisbury DPW Director), and Donnie Drewer.
