LUSBY --- Calvert Sheriff’s officers report that on Friday, October 10th at 4:20 p.m. Animal Control Officer Craig Dichter responded to the 11000 block of Millbridge Road in Lusby for the report of a horse down a well pump house.
The horse was stuck inside an approximately 4x4 square about 6 to 8 feet deep that had a well pressure tank next to it.  The horse’s head was almost level with the top of the framing surrounding the pressure tank.  The horse attempted to get out of the hole and appeared to be caught on something inside the hole.  Volunteers from the Solomon's Fire Department arrived to assist.
The horse’s owner advised her veterinarian is Dr. Murphy of Southern Equine Veterinarian Service in Upper Marlboro and he and Dr. Rania Lisas from Tidewater Veterinary Hospital in Charlotte Hall arrived and began to sedate the horse about 6 pm.  Once sedated, the fire department volunteers and ACO Dichter started to remove some of the well framing and began to dig away the side with an excavator.
During this time, Deputy Fire Chief Simon Thomas took over the scene to ensure everyone’s safety as excavation took place.
At approximately 10:00 p.m. the horse went into cardiac arrest and members of the Solomon’s Volunteer Fire Department assisted with CPR but were unable to resuscitate the horse.
Police say that on the scene were several people who board their horses on the property, as well as three other Animal Control Wardens.
