Hoyer to Host U.S. Service Academy and Military Career Forum
Encourages Students Interested in Applying to a U.S. Service Academy to Attend
UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) announced today that he will host the 27th Annual U.S. Academy and Military Career Forum on Monday, April 7, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro. Rep. Hoyer’s annual forum provides students an opportunity to learn more about an interesting and fulfilling career in the United States Military and will feature representatives of the U.S. Service Academies, local University ROTC Programs and Military Service Recruiters.
“Our nation’s service academies are among the most prestigious institutions of higher education in America,” stated Rep. Hoyer. “In addition to teaching the leadership, discipline and communication necessary to be an officer in our nation's military, they provide a skill-set invaluable in today's job market. I encourage anyone interested in applying to a U.S. Service Academy to join me on April 7 to learn more about the application process and the tremendous opportunities available for Academy students and those interested in a career in military service.”
In order to pursue appointment to a U.S. Service Academy, students between the ages of 17 and 22 must be nominated. Congressman Hoyer's office will start accepting applications later this Spring for anyone interested in entering a U.S. Service Academy in the summer of 2009.
Students unable to make it to the April 7 forum can find information about applying to a Service Academy online at Rep. Hoyer’s website at: www.hoyer.house.gov/services/academy.asp.
Every year Congressman Hoyer nominates outstanding candidates from the 5th Congressional District for admission into one of four United States service academies: The U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York (Army), the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. Last year, Congressman Hoyer nominated 43 students for consideration; 15 of those were accepted. Accepted nominees for the 2008-09 school year will be announced later this spring.
