Quarterbacks, Ambassador Kapneck and Bella Napoli Restaurant

I was sorry to hear of the passing of John Cox at age 60. He achieved a lot in his lifetime. He was football coach at LaPlata High School which he had attended earlier, was a principal at Westlake High School, a Charles County and State of Maryland top administrator and won Coach of the Year honors from the Baltimore Sun which I helped him get. He was a good man who did a good job. My deepest sympathy goes to his wife Sarah Cruikshask "Sally" Cox and his family.

Also or deepest sympathy goes to the family of Leontine Connolly Tansill who passed at age 94 at his home in White Plains (she graduated from St. Cecilia's Academy in DC and was a member of the Red Hat Society and the Buckley Club at St. Francis Xavier in DC).

One of the great places I like to eat at is here in Pasadena and its called Bella Napoli Italian Restaurant at Suite G, 350 Mountain Road. The top chef is Biagio Carannante and is managed by Pasquale Carannante. They have great dishes, I especially like the angel hair pasta, the baked ziti is tremendous as is all their food. The canoles are made there and you can go to their website www.bellanapoli and see the atmosphere and friendly folks that take care of you.

Lenny Moore, Ronnie Dove, Carolyn Keenen are just some of the area folks you see enjoying the food and atmosphere, its like a visit to Italy. Great place, great people and of course, great food prepared by chef Biagio at Bella Napoli.

Recently I mentioned my good friend of many years, Phil Kapneck, and I really didn’t touch on how he really has been an Ambassador for Maryland for many years. He has lived overseas and really represented Maryland well and he lived for several years in Australia and New Zealand where he made many friends not only for himself but also for Maryland. Our hats off to a great man, great American and a great Marylander who has done so much for Maryland. Not only is he the Maryland Industrial, but also our State’s Good Will Ambassador.

Today (Octo.21) the Ravens travel to visit the sick, crippled, terrible and deflated Buffalo Bills, one of the sorriest NFL franchises, it looks like an easy victory for "Big Ego’s" team.

The Redskins host the Arizona Cardinals and this also appears to be an easy win for the Redskins over a crippled team and also an el stinko franchise. Bret Farve out dueled the Skins Jason Campbell (he has shown nothing to make him more than an NFL journeyman QB).

Kyle Boller has looked good playing in place of "Airless" McNair. The Ravens dropped so many of Boller’s passes it looked like none of his receivers wanted to catch the ball. Chris McAllister is out for a few weeks.

The Skins Santana Moss took himself out of the Skins-Packers game and wouldn’t go back in, I wonder if he heard the "footsteps".

Vinny Testaverde threw a TD pass in Carolina’s 21-10 victory over Arizona making it 21 consecutive years that he’s thrown a TD pass in an NFL game.

Look for the New York Jets to upset the Bengals. Keep an eye on the Indianapolis at Jacksonville game.

San Diego picked up WR Chris Chambers in a trade with Miami.

Toni Cornheiser continues to bomb on MNF, and people are starting to wonder what he has on the owners of ESPN, bring back Joe Theismann to replace him.

Tampa Bay has added running back Michael Bennett from Kansas City which welcomes back Priest Holmes this week. Larry Johnson is pressing to be the biggest "hot dog" in the NFL.

Former Redskin QB Tim Hasselback has been signed by Arizona.

What about Danny Snyder, and the Redskins charging $4 for a bottle of water then shutting off the water fountains in Fed-Ex field, that comes from a long time Redskin season ticket holder.

Navy played well in the Mids 48-45 win over Pitt in overtime. I don’t usually say it but they did have a good effort even tho they were playing against a team that was coached by two NFL failures Dave Wannstedt and his offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh (you remember him as being dismal when he was with the Ravens).

I have to question their game management and play calling, after all when you have a runner who’s gained 165 yards and 2 TD’s in the game and you don’t give him a touch when you have 3rd and goal at the 2 then 4th and 2, something is wrong in Pittsburgh.

Navy hosts Delaware on October 27th. Also this could be the year that the Mids beat Notre Dame.

Maryland hosts Clemson on the 27th. Morgan State also has a big home game on the 27th hosting Florida A&M.

Towson is off on the 27th. How about that Boise State 69-67 win over Nevada in four overtimes.

Other State college football scores: Valdase Morri scored 3 TD’s and Ronnie Curley ran 2 as Salisbury ran its record to 7-0 with a 56-20 bombing of Morrisville State College.

Ursinus topped Johns Hopkins 17-10. Muhlenberg routed McDaniel 43-9.

Virginia Tech ran all over Duke 43-14. Hofstra banged out a 20-3 victory over Towson.

Southern Virginia stopped Frostburg State 35-20. Air Force beat Colorado State 45-21. Morgan State topped Howard 36-33 in overtime.

Nick Elko threw for two scores and ran for two to lead Arundel to a 44-8 win over Annapolis.

Patuxent slipped by LaPlata 27-21 to remain unbeaten. Suitland nipped a depleted Eleanor Roosevelt team 15-14. Westlake blasted Northern 56-6. Douglass upset Surrattsville 36-24. Anacostia ripped Spingarn 54-0.

Theodore Roosevelt rolled over Cardozo 63-0. Ballou beat Tech 39-0. Dunbar won over Wilson 28-0. HD Woodson beat Eastern 39-0. Curley 39 Pallotti 13.

Friendly stopped Potomac 26-0. McDonough over Great Mills 42-6.

At Clarence "Du" Burns Arena Jake Smith’s Baltimore Pro Boxing put on a show and a large crowd turned out. The results were: Tim Coleman ran his record to 13-0 winning a unanimous 8 round decision over Deal Carxasquillo. Former WBO cruiserweight champion Boone Paultz dropped a six round unanimous decision to Darryl Holly. Tony Cygan TKO’ed Henry Mayes in the sixth round. Elias Bouloubasis TKO’ed Rakeem Cartes in the 3rd round.

Willie Williams won a majority decision over Ray Ruis. Evander Holyfield lost to Sultan Ibragimov before a small crowd in Moscow. Where’s "Has been" Rahman when he’s needed?

Ballroom Boxing returns to Michael’s 8th Avenue on November 29th.

Ted Sophocleus fund raiser: Ronnie Dove will headline Ted Sophocleus fundraiser on October 26th at Michael’s 8th Avenue. The theme is "Lost in the 50’s".

Second-ranked Terps win, 7-0

Senior Janneke van Leeuwen scored three goals and assisted on two others to lead the second-ranked Terrapin field hockey team to a 7-0 rout of Delaware in Newark, Del., on Sunday afternoon. It was the seventh shutout of the season for the Terps.

Freshman Katie O’Donnell scored the deciding goal just 1:03 into the game. The game remained close until just before the end of the first half when junior Susie Rowe gave the Terrapins a 2-0 lead. It was the first of two goals for the 2006 All-American.

Maryland (16-0) broke the game wide open in the second period. Senior Janneke van Leeuwen went on a tear, having a hand in all five of the Terps’ second-half tallies. She gave the team a three-goal cushion in the 50th minute on a penalty corner. In the 53rd minute, she assisted on junior Ellen Ott’s penalty-corner goal.

Almost three minutes after that, van Leeuwen scored again, before assisting on the Terps’ sixth goal of the game, also on a penalty corner. Van Leeuwen capped the scoring as Ott assisted on her career-high third goal of the afternoon.

On the other end of the field, the defense also had an outstanding performance, posting its seventh shutout of the season. The Terps also limited Delaware, who fell to 9-6 on the season, to just one shot for the game.

Maryland outshot the Blue Hens, 25-1, and outcornered them, 18-2.

Van Leeuwen collected a career-high eight points. The two assists also increased her career total to 49 in her four seasons, which moves her into a tie for fourth all-time.

Maryland returns to action next weekend traveling to No. 1 North Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Terps, who are a school-record 16-0 on the season, battle the Tar Heels, who are also 16-0, for the outright ACC regular-season crown. Both teams are currently tied in the conference standings at 4-0. The game will also be webcast on ACC Select at acc.playonsports.tv.

Senior midfielder earns honor for the first time

For the first time in her career, senior Janneke van Leeuwen was named the ACC’s Field Hockey Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. It is the fourth time this season, including the second week in a row, a Terrapin has been awarded the recognition. Van Leeuwen is also the second Terp to garner the award.

Janneke van Leeuwen led Maryland to two victories last week, racking up four goals and three assists for 11 points, as the Terrapins remained perfect, sporting a 16-0 record.

In the home contest versus No. 10 Old Dominion on Oct. 12, van Leeuwen assisted on the game-tying goal and then added a score of her own to help the Terps to the 4-1 win. In the 7-0 route of Delaware on Sunday, a team that has been in and out of the top 20 rankings all season, she had a hand in all five of Maryland’s second-half goals, recording her first-career hat trick and dishing out two assists.

Van Leeuwen is second on the team with 11 goals and 10 assists. A two-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic All-Region selection, she has collected 49 career assists to tie for fourth all-time in the Maryland record books.

The second-ranked Terps prepare for its biggest test of the season when it travels to No. 1 North Carolina, who is also undefeated with a 16-0 record. Both teams sit atop the ACC standings a 4-0, as well. The winner claims the regular-season conference title and the top seed in the ACC Tournament. The game can be watched on ACC Select at www.accselect.com and can be heard on the University of Maryland’s WMUC Sports at www.wmucsports.com.

Bill,

Another tour de force, great work, keep it up buddy.

LNF

Len,

Thanks when is the next meeting of the Rogers Hornsby Society?

Bill

Bill,

Does anyone have CP Montgomery’s address and telephone number please?

Fred

Bill,

Thanks Bill for all the news. Seton Hall coach, Bobby Gonzalez, has recruited outstanding talent to play this season for the men’s basketball team. They have some height now (6'’9" Brandon Walters, 6’11" Mike Davis and 6’6" Michael Glover) to go along with their excellent guards ( Brian Lang, Jamar Nutter and Eugene Harvey) who were there last season on a squad that went 13 and 16).They also acquired 6’6" forward Robert Mitchell from Duquene, their leading scorer at 16 points per game. He will need to sit out this season. the Hall may even make it to post season, at least the NIT but perhaps even the NCAA’s. I noted a new email address for you wmcca@comcast .net. Should I use that instead of BMcCaf ?

Cheers Jerry Todd

Jerry,

Great report, Great hearing from you. Keep me up to date with the Hall.

Bill

Bill,

PRAYERS NEEDED!

I would like to thank all of you for your prayers for Lauren. She improved considerably with the help of heavy medication and spinal blocks. Now the medications are affecting her organs and her quality of life will go further downhill than it is now. The fine doctors at John Hopkins are going to perform a test operation on 10/18. A small wire will be implanted into a small section of her spine with an electrical charge unit which should stop the pain. This is only a test. If this small section works she will be scheduled for major surgery to insert a wire the entire length of her spine with the electrical unit being implanted into her side. That operation is extremely dangerous; however, if successful, she should be able to be pain free for about 9 years. The doctors have told her mother that some people have never returned after having this procedure.

Needless to say, I am again asking for prayers for our grand-daughter Lauren.

Please include Joe’s cousin Mary Ann. Below please read the e-mail she sent to me just a few days ago. She will have the results of her biopsy Tuesday or Wednesday. Prayers work so please include Mary Ann in your prayers. I will keep you all posted. Thank you.

From Mary Ann:

Just want you to know that I might have another big health problem. As you know, I drove to Cleveland on Wednesday for my Thursday breast MRI.
Unfortunately, it was not normal. There is an area that the doctor described "suggests malignancy". He also did an ultrasound and, then, a biopsy. The results won’t be ready until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Yesterday, I called my local Buffalo radiation oncologist, who, then called the Cleveland Clinic doctor to discuss. This new area could be something benign, too....we just don’t know yet.

The reason this is so upsetting it that the original tumor (surgery was only 1
year ago, on 9 Oct 2006, then chemo, then radiation, which ended only 5 months ago), was a very uncommon type. It is the "Triple Negative" type. That means that it was estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and Her 2 Neu receptor negative. Even worse, on a scale of 0-12 , with 12 being the most aggressive and fastest growing, my tumor was a 12, and worse still, it had already spread to my lymph nodes.

So, between your prayers for Lauren and everyone else you pray for, could you please say a little prayer for me, too?

J.J.,

Our prayers are with you.

Bill

Fred Thompson has picked up Maryland support in his run for President on the Republican ticket. State Senator David Brinkley and Delegate Tony O’Donnell and Republican Central Committee Chairman Chris Cavey. Ex Senator Frank Shore like Mitt Romney. Former Governor Bob Ehrlich is for former NY City Mayor Rudy Guiliano. Governor O’Malley is backing Hillary Clinton. Pete Piddle is backing Al Gore. E.J. Piplin the Eastern Shore Senator is running for governor of Maryland in 2010, he’s got a new website www.stopmarylandtaxhikes.com.

Kojo Nnamdi is becoming the democratic Ron Smith, you can hear Kojo on WAMU (88.5 FM). With all this tax talk it has people forgetting about the gas and electric bills and the gas at the pumps which is headed to $4.00 per gallon by Thanksgiving.

Now everyone knows what Buck Owens was singing about in his song "I’ve Got a Tiger by the Tail". Ray Kenney who owns Pasadena Furniture had a great anti-tax ad in the Baltimore Examiner on Friday, October 12th. He wants you to contact the "services for O’Malley" Governor at 1-800-811-8336 (toll free) or email him at governor@gov.state.md.us and tell him "NO SALES TAX INCREASE". Do it today!

Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith may run for Governor in 2010 unless the Governor pushes him for Comptroller.

Plenty of candidates marching in for the Baltimore County Executive race in 2010 including Sheriff Jay Fisher, County Council members Joe Bartenfelder, Sam Moxley, Vince Gardina, Delegate Sonny Minnick, Delegate Pat McDonough, Sharon Sanders, and maybe popular Delegate Jim (you are never alone with Malone) Malone.

Nice article on Ayn Rand by Brian Doherty in this past Sunday’s Baltimore Sun.

The new Hawaii Super ferry has been put on hold for an environment study, also seems the Maryland ferry seems to have been put on hold by the Governor and Maryland MDOT, that doesn’t surprise you does it. Where does MARC expansion stand now, oh that’s right its decades away right now.

Great article on Georgetown U. football by Bill Pennington in the October 13th sports section of the New York Times.

No truth to David J. or Paul Weasel entering the world of outlaw racing.

A rumor has it that the Governor is not too happy with the way MDOT is taking hits and is looking closely at such things as rape, robbery, and assaults happening at light rail stations. Another MTA rumor has the MTA Director resigning and being replaced by Henry Kay, Wayne Jubb, or Michael Dietz (Dietz of course was former MDOT Secretary Flanagan’s gofer) you know get me coffee, lunch or drive me here or there and was a big worker for the former Governor’s re-elect campaign at least that’s the rumor. Anyway keep an eye open on MDOT happenings.

Are the Bowie Baysox going to move for the 2008 season?

Congratulations to Gene and Angie Carls who celebrated 47 years of married life on October 7th.

I think the Baltimore Orioles, Dave Trembley and Andy McPhail looked bad in letting Tom Trebelhorn and Leo Mazzone go. Rick Kranitz is the new Orioles pitching coach, I wonder who he was saluting in that picture on Thurday’s Examiner?

Say wasn’t Cleveland closer Joe Borowski once in the Baltimore organization?

American Gladiators is coming back on NBC around the first of January and guess what? Ledgendary wrestler Hulk Hogan will be the host of the show. Can Bad Boy Hardy b

Blair Lee writes politics in the Gazette, isn’t he the same BL4 that ran the Lee/Hoyer Governor ticket that lost to Harry Hughes in an upset, oh well it’s a new time eh. Same paper had Barry Rascovar using the "pennies for lane" 1950’s slogan updating it to "pennies for O’Malley and Hillary" this year.
