The Chevrolet Volt concept is a plug-in electric vehicle that will run up to 40 miles without ever using a drop of gasoline -- which according to government data, would be enough to handle approximately two-thirds of daily commutes for American drivers.  The first vehicle in GM’s “E-Flex” family, the Volt will be powered by an electric motor, which draws its energy from on-board batteries.  The batteries, in turn, will be re-charged by a small internal combustion engine that will run on gas, diesel or ethanol.  When not in use, the batteries will be re-charged by simply plugging the Volt into an electric outlet.  GM officials have this car in DC for the next week to whip up news over their newest vehicle.

No Gay Stop in Charles County

WALDORF --- The Charles County Sheriff's Dept. reports that someone spray painted the word "gay" on a stop sign and that they are investigating the incident as a "hate crime". The police were able to discern that the intent of the paint-can toting criminal was to somehow stop gay stops, stop gays from doing some unknown thing or to to encourage gay behavior from motorists when stopping at the sign; to otherwise stop having a gay old time. Two such signs were spray painted on signs on Oak Ridge Road and Oaks Road in Hughesville, making this the area's designated "Stop Gays" zone. This news story will not have a pink background like the one above so as to not make light of this story.

Terror Truck Headed for Base?

PAX RIVER (July 28) - A terror alert about a man with a tractor-trailer with New York tags trying to hire a local man with an ID to drive his truck onboard the Naval Air Station was passed over to the St. Mary's Sheriff's Department for a lookout but the Navy never released any more information about the incident ore responded to requests for information.  There was a long delay between the report to the Navy and the warning to the community and then the Navy lapsed into a coma for the rest of the week, not responding to requests for more information.  Request from our readers were passed along to police who were unable to find out from the Navy if the incident was bogus or real.
The Navy sent out an email from NAWC Anti-Terrorism Officer Vimaris Guadalupe.  Her phone numbers are: 301-757-4719 and cell: 240-577-1862, now everyone has her number and can call her for confirmation of any emails received in the future about terrorism at Pax River.
Call Guadalupe if you want to be in the loop.

State Trooper out to get fleeing man

dumps his police car in pond

(Clements July 28) Maryland State Trooper Adams stands by while a tow truck prepares to pull his state police cruiser out of a pond, proving that when you run from a state trooper he isn't going to give up easily.
The Maryland State Police experience a number of wrecked and totaled units during the course of a year pursuing criminals and fleeing drivers, making trips to body shops and medical costs for troopers part of police work.  In the Dukes of Hazard life in Southern Maryland, police chases are an almost daily occurrence with some local rednecks who poach deer by spotlighting rev up their engine performance by adding nitro to their fuel.

Cops Nab Pirate Red-Handed Ending Spree of Boat Burglaries

LA PLATA  (July 28) - According to NRP Sgt. Ken Turner, on Wednesday, July 25, at 1:15 a.m., the Maryland Natural Resources Police Tactical Response Team arrested Jeremy Michael Plemons, 26, of Marbury for breaking into a boat at the Smallwood State Park marina.
From December 2006 through July 24 of this year, Smallwood State Park has had over 25 incidents involving burglary, theft and malicious destruction of property. From those incidents, over $8,000 worth of equipment and cash had been stolen from the park and private individuals who stored vessels at the park’s marina. The NRP Tactical Response Team set up surveillance on the area and apprehended Plemons as he exited a vessel at the marina with a CD receiver in hand.  Later on that afternoon, the NRP Criminal Investigation Unit executed a search and seizure warrant on Plemons residence and recovered more items as evidence. Plemons is being held on $5,000 bond at the Charles County Detention Center. At this time, he has been charged with theft less than $500, burglary in the second degree, possession of burglary tools, trespassing and malicious destruction of property. NRP continues their investigation and additional charges are pending.  NRP was assisted by the Maryland State Police and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

Pax River from space, as seen in this photo taken by astronauts at the international space station.  They like to use the Naval Air Station as a training aid for focusing their cameras due to the contrast of the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, top and right, the Patuxent River, to the left and the land.  The cross of the landing runways also helps them understand just what in tarnation that they are viewing. A view of Edwards Air Force Base which shows no encroachment on their runways ought to make it clear that letting developers such as Guy Curley with his project close to the base, will put Pax River at a disadvantage with China Lake at Edwards.  Both bases are in competition for testing missions conducted by the armed services.   Photo by NASA.  The photo at right shows a slightly different view but more of the development taking place in Lexington Park.  The St. Mary's government recently turned down the Glazed Pines project of Curley's but fear the developer will pursue this project in court.  Photo by Google Earth.

Need 911?

Are you depending on an ambulance showing up when your loved one has a heart attack

and you call 911?  If so, read this:

from the Watch Desk

Re: When is there going to be paid EMS in St. Mary's County?

The people in charge (chiefs, presidents, and commissioners, so called public safety officials) do not care about response time. They don’t care if a person having a heart attack waits 20 minutes for an ambulance or up to 30 minutes for ALS intervention. How many times have you heard "No medic unit available" All they care about is taxing the public to pay for a service that is sub par (Lexington Park is the exception, what ever they are doing needs to be repeated elsewhere) and buying more useless equipment. (5 ambulances when only one can get out). There is absolutely NO oversight on what is bought in this county, everyone buys what they want regardless if it’s needed or not.

Totally unbelievable!!!!

Foul Mouth Band Gets Promoter Shut Down by Liquor Board

The former Southridge restaurant in Ridge, now Boatman's South, featuring a Mom & Pops pizza place and still hosting a down-county bar, had planned to have the band Molly Hatchet on it's ball field on July 28th.  But a foul-mouthed band playing at the place last month stirred the neighbors to action and all of officialdom caught hell from the people of Ridge, spurring them to uncommonly quick action to shut down the concert before the first guitar string was plucked. The promoter has given up and moved the event to Seaside View. He also promises that future bands at Boatman's will be quieter and not use foul language. Story

STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE ELKTON HOMICIDE
(North East, MD) — Maryland State Police are investigating the murder of a Cecil County man at the hands of his son, following a motor vehicle crash in Elkton. The victim is identified as Eugene Francis Pritchard, 69, of the 100-block of Old Bay View Road in North East.
Pritchard was transported to Elkton Union Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Shortly after 12:00 a.m., Troopers from the North East barrack received a 9-1-1 call reporting a single vehicle crash in the 800 block of Nottingham Road, Elkton, Maryland. Trooper First Class John Hickey arrived and discovered that that a van had crashed into a tree in the front yard of a house.
Witnesses told the trooper that they had seen an apparent altercation inside the van after the crash and described the appearance of a man seen fleeing the crash scene.
As TFC Hickey was checking the victim’s welfare, he observed an individual matching the description attempting to flee the area on foot. TFC Hickey was able to track down the suspect and bring him into custody.
The suspect, Eugene Francis Pritchard Jr., 30, of the unit block of Oak Drive, Elkton, Maryland was transported to the North East Barrack for processing. He will be taken before a District Court Commissioner later today where he will be arraigned on homicide charges.

Robbed St. John's Pharmacy

Bandit could be same one hitting
other drugstores in region

HOLLYWOOD -(July 11) ---  Just about 5:30 pm today, a man reportedly went inside the front door of St. John's Pharmacy with a ski mask and a gun, robbed the store of merchandise and money and then fled.  The first arriving police officers surrounded the place and confirmed that the robber had left. A K-9 dog was responding. A bystander saw him go in and called 911.  The man may have fled in a tan or beige car.
Police say that the robber is about 5'10" tall, is very skinny, has brown hair, was wearing blue jeans and a zip up jacket.
He had a blue and red bandana.  Call 911 if you have any tips on the identity of this dangerous gunman. Robberies of drug stores often are for drugs such as Oxycotin. Drug addicts also go to local drug stores to get their prescriptions of methadone filled.
The need for cash to buy illegal drugs fuels most armed robberies and the lookout description of the robber being very thin is also an indication that the robber could be a drug addict seeking money for drugs as addicts often are very thin due to poor diets.

GREAT MILLS (July 14) This photo clearly shows the skid marks left by this car when it careened across the road and slammed into the barn.  The driver was checked out and refused transport by the Lexington Park Vol. Rescue Squad.  Fire personnel from the Second District Vol. Fire Department also responded but the barn continues to be sturdy despite this latest attempt to knock it down.  Police say that the kid passed in a no passing zone when he lost control and ran into the barn.  His parents may want to believe that the cops just made it all up and these are doctored photos. But he's got a bad driving record and at this rate won't have a drivers license too long. Just hope he doesn't kill someone before he has his permit snatched.

Man Gives SWAT Team the Slip; Cops Catch Up With Him in Woods

VALLEY LEE (July 12) ---  A Valley Lee man who’s family told police was holed up in the house, likely not with any weapons, but may harm himself, had a SWAT Team gearing up to bring him out of the house early on Thursday morning. He wasn't expected to have any weapons but might have been armed with a knife.  One officer warned others to keep their guard up as the man 'is pretty good with his hands'.  The man was pretty well loaded and could have fallen asleep, his family told police. But when police entered the house, they found out that the man had given them the slip through a window. About an hour later, St. Mary's deputies caught up with the man and was carted off to jail.

For one brief hour, it was just like daytime in Lexington Park with it's daily buffet line of wrecks, mayhem and madness on local roads as stupid speeding drivers violate all manner of traffic laws which are on the books and find new ways to wreck, maim and kill.   Most of the traffic crashes take place on Rt. 235 and Rt. 5 but this midnight wreck brought a kaleidoscope of color and light to Dodge City, a town once filled with slot machines and flashing neon lights overtop of a dozen strip clubs.  Now most of the entertainment comes from the cadre of bums who live in several tent villages in wooded areas.  The bums were attracted to the area by the homeless shelter but don't like the rules of the shelter, like 'no drinking', and thus set up camp in the woods.

A New Tiller Truck for Bay District?

LEXINGTON PARK (July 8) Should Bay District Volunteer Fire Department, which is almost completely supported by tax dollars, spend nearly $750,000 on a new tiller fire truck, which requires 2 drivers, at a time when they have trouble getting one driver to answer fire calls utilizing ladder trucks during the day?   There is much debate within the fire fighting community as to the wisdom of this decision by Bay District.
Bay District operates with very little oversight from the St. Mary's Commissioners who fear not granting any request made by the department. Very wisely, the politicians worry about pressure for paid firefighters, something even the volunteers don't want.
Even though the combination of sprinklers required in new commercial construction along with an expanding tax base, the fire tax rate has not dropped for the Lexington Park area.
Some volunteers wonder why the mostly tax money will be spent on an expensive piece of fire apparatus which will often not be used due to the shortage of qualified drivers.
One of our readers says that the money would be better used to buy equipment much more likely to be used. Tiller trucks are great for maneuvering in tight spots in big cities, which is not a real problem for this area.

Learn more about tiller aerial trucks at this forum at firehouse.com and see specs on the top-rated American LaFRANCE truck.

Can lip service from an official save your

life when you need a medic?

Also, the lack of an available medic unit leaves many in peril of death when medics on duty could save lives...volunteers are not coming forth, ambulance calls are going unanswered and yet departments continue to buy new equipment when no one shows up to drive the ones already in the station, the politicians give lip service to the problem and everyone avoids the issue of paid EMS for fear it will lead to paid firefighters.
When will there be paid EMS Service in St. Mary's County?
