Firefighters braved flashing lightning to fight this fire...

Firefighters from Bay District were assisted by Valley Lee, Solomon's and Hollywood volunteers in fighting this fire which was likely set off by the fierce thunderstorm and a lightning strike.  The storm took place about 8 pm, downing trees and a wreck on the Solomon's bridge was just icing on the cake for an evening of calamity.  The Red Cross assisted at least two families who lost their homes in the fire.  The fire was quickly contained as firefighters were assisted by a huge downpour.  ST. This new Chipotle will open next week on Rt. 235 in California at the site of the old Tennison's Bar & Grocery.  Tennison's was also a hardware store, had an ice house and one local restaurateur, Scott Adams, got his start operating a steamed crab stand in the parking lot.  A lot of local politics was conducted in the bar which was known as 'headquarters'. In 1987 a Dash-In was built at the site and last year it closed.  An abstract painting of Tennison's by Charlie Hewitt is in the Md. Bank branch across the street. The new eatery will have inside and outside seating.

Second Murder Suspect Arrested

Boat ran aground

POTOMAC RIVER June 24 --- A 22 foot boat was stuck on a sandbar, known as Heron Island on Sunday afternoon. The island disappeared years ago, except for at low tide, and novice boaters who don't use charts don't know the sand bar is there until they hit it. The Seventh District Vol. Fire Department dispatched a fireboat to get out on the river and pull the boat off the sandbar.  Private vessels were also attempting to reach the stranded sand bar-dogs before the fireboat. Charts are available at the same places the boaters buy beer and gas.

Ohio Bombshell

Police say that they discovered the body of who they believe is Jessie Davis and have placed Bobby Cutts Jr. under arrest for two counts of murder...

at news conference at 6 pm today, Uniontown police made their announcement of the gruesome discovery and the arrest of the Canton police officer who is the boyfriend of the victim, the father of the dead baby, who was also found dead, and the father of the 2-year-old child who was discovered by himself when his mother was missing.

It was a real hay burner

LOVEVILLE --- A farmer moving a trailer load of hay on Rt. 247 in the area of Rt. 5 was unaware that somehow his load had caught fire.  Leonardtown VFD personnel responded to put out the fire which had gained some real momentum.  After the fire was put out, a resident who suffered some damage to her yard from the fire called police on the farmer, making it a bad day for this guy.

A real lousy driver hit boat, and ran

LEXINGTON PARK June 23 ---  Police are looking for a red Jeep which was last seen headed southbound on Rt. 235 from Lexington Park after hitting a vehicle towing a boat and then taking off.  The boat came off the trailer right near the main gate of the Patuxent River Naval Air Station.  The boat and vehicle belong to a Welcome man who apparently had been to Point Lookout for fishing.

Dangerous Narrow Road

It was September of 2003 and this bus overturned on Rt. 5 near Point Lookout when it collided with a dump truck.  The road isn't wide enough for a truck and a bus to pass side by side.  The response from the State of Maryland?  In recent weeks, the SHA has painted wider paint strips on the roadway but nothing has been done to widen the road. The extra wide white stripes on both sides of the roadway in front of Rick's Marine evidently will give the school bus tires something to grip on to keep from going off the road.  The Ehrlich Administration scrapped plans to widen this section of Rt. 5 during the last four years and Del. John Bohanan said today he would be working to have SHA fund this project.

Boat in Distress...maybe

POINT LOOKOUT June 23rd ---  A 24' boat which was launched at Point Lookout State Park has called 911 just before midnight and asked for help as it is taking on water.  The location of the disabled vessel, with 4 people on board, is just off of Camp Riverview, the DC summer camp just north of the state park.  The Ridge VFD fireboat is being dispatched along with a boat from Valley Lee.  The Coast Guard is also responding.  The first report from the scene is that the boat is not sinking but simply not running and is about 300 yards off shore, which means that the occupants can likely get out and walk to shore.  Ridge firefighters are checking the welfare of those aboard.
Motorcyclist Pulled Wheelie, Wrecked on Rt. 235
CALIFORNIA June 23 --- An operator of a motorcycle pulled a wheelie on Rt. 235 in front of the Super 8 Motel in California just about midnight and lost control of his bike and wrecked.  The man's antics were witnessed by an off duty Sheriff's Deputy and he was issued a citation for reckless driving but not wreckless driving as a tow truck was summoned to haul away his bike.

Solomon's Bridge Shut Down

Again for Wreck

ST. MARY'S TODAY photo

SEVEN GABLES ISLAND ---  The Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge, the only link between St. Mary's and Calvert County, and one of three principal traffic routes feeding the Naval Air Warfare Center at Pax River was blocked once again for morning rush hour, this time being closed for over two hours as police and tow trucks attempted to pry apart at least two trucks, and perhaps other vehicles as well, according to Maryland State Police Sgt. Kathy Barrilone.
"The wreck took place at 8 am and was finally cleared about 20 minutes ago," Sgt. Barrilone told ST. MARY'S TODAY.  Traffic was completely blocked in both directions.
"One of the trucks apparently ran overtop of another, one was a tractor-trailer," said Sgt. Barrilone. "They had a lot of trouble getting them apart and clearing the bridge for traffic."
The bridge opened with only a single lane in each direction in 1977 and cannot be widened.
Sen. Roy Dyson (D. St. Mary's, Calvert, Charles) has sponsored legislation directing the SHA to plan for a new second span over the Patuxent at Solomon's.  Dyson told ST. MARY'S TODAY that he has requested the SHA to make plans for a four-lane bridge over the river and suggested that the cost may be lowered by building a bridge which doesn't soar into the sky the way the current bridge does.  Dyson says a draw span would be seldom used for the occasional Navy ships that visit the Navy facility at Solomon's.  A draw span could be high enough to allow sail boats and tug traffic to pass underneath, said Dyson.
Governor Martin O'Malley has pledged to speed up planning and design of a new bridge at Solomon's as well as bring commuter rail into the region.

Truck Smash-up

LEONARDTOWN --- A late afternoon smash-up on Rt. 5 at Fairgrounds Road may have taken place due to driver inattention when a box truck slammed into the rear end of a flatbed delivery truck as the first truck stopped for a traffic light.  Leonardtown and Hollywood heavy squad trucks were called to the scene with one of the squads used to hoist the delivery truck forward in order to free the driver of the box truck who was trapped inside.  Firefighters worked for nearly a half hour prying the two trucks apart and one of those injured was flown from the scene by Maryland State Police Trooper Seven Med-Evac Helicopter.  Leonardtown Volunteer Rescue Squad and Advanced Life Support Medics stabilized the injured on the scene.

Senator Bernie Fowler's Patuxent River Wade-In attracted Governor Martin O'Malley, left, and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D. Md.5th) to Broomes Island this past Sunday.  Note that everyone except Hoyer was wearing shorts and the Governor showed up even though he is on crutches.  The Irish are just tough and evidently Hoyer is used to wet pants.  Right, the miracle waters of the Patuxent River apparently healed the Governor as he no longer needed his crutches.   Fowler began this annual peek at his feet to bring attention to the way that Washington area counties pollute the Patuxent, degrade the water quality and kill the fish and crabs with their runoff from sewage and stormwater.  Fowler used to be able to see his toes when he waded in the river when he was a kid, which was a really long time ago. With O'Malley and Sen. Fowler are Sen. Mike Miller (D. Calvert, PG), in red shirt, and Sen. Roy Dyson (D. St. Mary's, Calvert, Charles) at right in black.  Betty Fowler is next to the former Senator.

PRINCE FREDERICK --- Calvert Sheriff's officers report that on Friday, June 8th at approx. 1:02 p.m. members of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryland State Police, Barrack U, Prince Frederick, were dispatched to the Lower Marlboro area for a firearms complaint. Upon their arrival they discovered an armed
subject in the woods holding a gun. After lengthy negotiations, the subject failed to disarm himself. The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Team was dispatched in an attempt to disarm the subject, police say he pointed the gun at one of the SOT members. The officer then had to discharge his weapon in self defense, striking the subject in his left arm. The 63-year-old male subject, who is from the Lower Marlboro area, was transported via MSP helicopter to Prince Georges County Hospital. The incident is being investigated by members of the Criminal Investigative Team.

MOUNT VERNON, Va.  To commemorate the 400th anniversary of Captain John Smith’s extraordinary voyage to explore the Chesapeake Bay, a replica of Smith’s 30-foot “shallop” will retrace the original 1,500-mile route.  The boat’s first stop in Northern Virginia is at Historic Mount Vernon’s wharf on June 23 and 24, where visitors can talk to the crew and explore a traveling exhibit about early-American life and the groundbreaking voyage.  Included with Estate admission: adults, $13; youth, 6-11 $6; children 5 and under, free. The Estate is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The traveling exhibit gives an in-depth look at the world of the early 17th-century Chesapeake Native American and English cultures. Visitors can view a timeline of Smith’s historic travels, read the original crew’s descriptions of Native Americans, and watch a film about Smith’s groundbreaking voyage. The exhibit also includes an interactive computer component offering visitors a 21st century approach to learning about the 17th century.
The Captain John Smith Four Hundred Project, a multi-year educational effort to commemorate the four hundredth anniversary of Smith’s 1,500 mile Chesapeake voyage, is an educational initiative of Sultana Projects, a non-profit organization based in Chestertown, Maryland. ST. MARY’S TODAY

LEXINGTON PARK (June 5, 2007) - A 16-year-old from Valley Lee was jailed after a sting operation at a Lexington Park hotel room in which the teen solicited an undercover cop to murder his mother and step-father,
reports the St. Mary's Bureau of Criminal Investigations.

The male teenager, whose name police are refusing to release in an effort to protect the victims, is being charged as an adult, said BCI Commander Lt. Rick Burris.

Burris confirmed for ST. MARY’S TODAY that on Saturday, June 2, police learned the teen was seeking a someone to commit murder and he came in contact with an undercover officer. The teen later responded to a specific hotel room to meet an undercover cop.

When the teen solicited the premeditated murder of his parents, he was arrested with the assistance of more officers who held the room under surveillance from another room, Burris said.

U. S. House of Representatives Majority Leader Steny Hoyer in his office in the Capitol building during an interview with ST. MARY'S TODAY. Copyright 2007 ST. MARY'S TODAY photo by Sean Rice
Hoyer now the longest serving member

of the Congress from Maryland

CHEAP SHOTS BRIEF: Congressman Steny Hoyer relaxes in the Majority Leaders Capitol office, a large suite of offices on the first floor of the Capital Building. Hoyer was elected to the House in a special election in 1981 to replace Congresswoman Gladys Noon Spellman who had suffered a stroke and laid in a coma in a nursing home for more than a year.   Hoyer represented Prince George's County since and in 1992, reapportionment moved part of Anne Arundel County, along with St. Mary's, Calvert and Charles into the 5th Congressional District.  Hoyer moved to Huntersville, which the big city media always gets wrong.  As Hoyer gets his mail delivered through the Mechanicsville Post Office, the out-of-towners assume he lives in Mechanicsville. He only wishes he did. Hoyer's biggest and toughest race was in 1992 when Larry Hogan Jr. was the GOP nominee and came within 25,000 votes of whipping Hoyer.  Hoyer took personal charge of his campaigns after that race and has whipped his opponents with increasingly big margins while the quality of his opponents dips lower into the political cess pool.
Hoyer was elected to the Maryland Senate in 1966 and became the youngest Senate President in history, now the position is filled by Sen. Mike Miller the longest serving Senate President, which proves we can't get rid of these guys from PG County, especially when they do a good job.
The previous record setting Congressman from Maryland was Congressman George Fallon of Baltimore, who served from 1945 to 1971.  He got a courthouse named after him, watch out for what we have to name after Steny.  Maybe a new Chesapeake Bay Bridge going from Calvert to the Eastern Shore.  Biography
