Kid Hit by
School Bus
CALIFORNIA (Dec. 11, 2007) St. Mary's Sheriff Tim Cameron says that
he is opposed to school buses pulling off to the right and not
activating their lights to discharge students, which apparently is
what led to a child being seriously injured yesterday when she was
hit a school bus coming from the same direction as the one she had
just alighted from.
According to Sgt. Steve Hall, on December 10, 2007 at 3:05 PM
Sheriff’s Office Patrol Units responded to investigate a motor
vehicle accident, involving a school bus and a pedestrian.
Preliminary investigation reveals the pedestrian, Briana Upchurch,
14, a freshman at Leonardtown High School, exited her school bus and
was attempting to cross St. Andrew’s Church Road/Route 4 in the area
of Sandra Lane, when she was struck by another school bus traveling
Northbound on St. Andrew’s Church Road/ Route 4.
The victim suffered multiple injuries including a fractured skull,
broken upper and lower jaws, broken collar bone, and severe
abrasions to her chest. The victim was flown by helicopter to Prince
George’s Hospital where surgery was performed to remove her spleen.
She has been released from ICU and is currently listed in stable
condition.
Bus drivers, not wanting to hold up traffic by frequent stops often
pulled to the shoulder of the road when students are exiting on that
side and not crossing but Cameron says the tragic event on Monday
shows the peril in that action.
"She may have assumed the driver had activated the lights, and just
walked out, we haven't been able to interview her yet," said
Cameron.
