Pedestrians not likely to use the $2 million

overpass at St. Mary's City

"Pedestrian overpasses and underpasses allow for the uninterrupted flow of pedestrian movement separate from the vehicle traffic. However, they should be a measure of last resort, and it is usually more appropriate to install safe crossings that are accessible to all pedestrians. Grade separated facilities are extremely high-cost, and overpasses in particular are a visually intrusive measure."  More

A deadly week for teens; 1 died in Calvert on Monday, 3 on Tuesday in Charles...

4 LaPlata High Teens Dead on Oliver's Shop Road

2 more teens and woman flown to trauma units; speed cause of death for LaPlata High teens

Jonathan Chapman, 16, on the La Plata High School junior varsity basketball team, was the driver of the car which slid sideways down Oliver's Shop Road.  At least two of his passengers were also fellow players on his school team.

UPDATE 2:00 pm  Nov. 7, 2007 --- The fourth young La Plata player died early today after being flown from the scene of a gruesome wreck on Oliver's Shop Road, once again due to a careless and speeding young driver.   Speed kills, seat belts save lives and it doesn't do much good to erect roadside memorials to loved ones along the roadway if one fails to put on their seat belt and obey the speed limit on the way home.  Too many young lives are lost each year in Southern Maryland, with many of them due to young inexperienced drivers speeding, participating in illegal street racing and failing to yield the right of way.   The latest death is that of Donte Segar, 14, of Hughesville.

DENTSVILLE UPDATE  7:00 am (Nov. 7, 2007) --- Police have identified
Jonathan Chapman, 16, of La Plata as the driver of the Mercury, which he lost control of on Oliver's Shop Road near Dentsville and slid sideways into the path of a Chevy Trailblazer operated by Pamela Stine, 38, of King George, Va., was flown to Suburban Hospital, where her injuries are said to be non-life-threatening. She was the sole occupant of the SUV. The teenagers are all students at La Plata High School and none of the teenagers was wearing a seatbelt. The Mercury's speed is considered a factor in the crash. The speed limit on Oliver Shop Road is 40 miles per hour. The Traffic Operations Unit is investigating.  Chapman, Tavonne Alston, 16, of La Plata and Dionnte Swinson, 15, of La Plata, who were all in the Mercury, died at the scene. The two other teens in the Mercury and the adult female driver of the SUV were seriously injured. The injured teens, Markus Allen, 17, of La Plata and Donte Segar, 14, of Hughesville, were flown by a Maryland State Police helicopter to the Shock Trauma Unit at Prince George's Hospital Center. The younger teen is in critical condition and the eldest has injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

UPDATE 9: 09 pm (Nov. 6, 2007) ---- According to Charles County Sheriff's Maj. Joseph Montminy, the three teens killed in this crash on Oliver's Shop Road, all of them boys, were one that was 15 and two were 16 year-olds.  They were on their way to basketball practice when the wreck took place.  There are three other persons who were flown to shock trauma units. A woman who was driving the white GMC SUV is reportedly in her 30's and was flown to Suburban Hospital with non-life threatening injuries while two other teens, were taken to PG Shock Trauma. A 17-year-old is listed as serious and a 14-year-old is said to be seriously injured and in critical condition.   More information and photos from the scene are pending and will be updated shortly. The deceased boys were traveling in a Mercury headed northbound when it collided with the GMC.  The other two boys were also in the Mercury.   ST. MARY'S TODAY photos by Matthew Ivancie  More Photos

6: 00 pm A police officer works at the scene of this two car crash, involving teens at Crescent Run Road and Oliver's Shop Road, near La Plata.  Even Charles County Sheriff's Major Joe Montminy has trouble getting to this crash site due to traffic being backed up on the narrow two-lane road leading to this scene of death, where three people are already listed as having died and 3 more are seriously hurt.  The white SUV show above was demolished in the crash while the gray sedan appears to be also completely in tatters, leaving little hope for those inside.
3 persons have been flown from the scene according to Maj. Montminy.

Great Mills High Naval ROTC Marches While Heathens Are Jail Bound

Graduation Day?  From high school to jail

GREAT MILLS (Nov. 6, 2007) left, punk under arrest, right photo, good kids participating in Junior Naval ROTC. A large fight broke out in the Great Mils High School cafeteria at about 11 am Monday, fights and arrests continued to mount while cops rolled in and officials locked the school down. A woman waiting to pick up her daughter told ST. MARY'S TODAY that even her own daughter had made bad decisions and had a child to show for hit, said that parents need to discipline their children and keep them from being disruptive at school. The mother said she was scared for her daughter's safety in the school.  At that point, the woman was beset by her mouthy daughter who was released from the school and who cursed her for not being parked at the front door, which was blocked to traffic by police cars. The mother, who had the granddaughter in the car and could not leave her to walk up to the front door, was worried sick about her daughter but her daughter was abusive and screamed at her mother. Another Teen Driver Dead; Six Injured

1
4-year-old fighting for life at shock trauma, some media reports were that this child died are not true;

police report that was still alive and by 11:15 pm friends and family were praying for him to continue to struggle to survive as he is cared for at the Baltimore Shock Trauma Unit, that Lt. Homer rich of the Maryland State Police calls
 "this phenomenal medical facility"

Alyson M. Purvis,17, of Chesapeake Beach, Md, was driving this van at left when she pulled out on Rt. 4 in front of a southbound truck, with 3 passengers in her van and was killed when the truck and van collided.  Teen driving restrictions have been adopted after several years of trying on the part of Sen. Roy Dyson (D. Calvert, St. Mary's, Charles) following another Calvert County wreck caused by a Calvert teen who was drag racing after school. 4 people, including the teen driver died in that wreck as the Patuxent High School students left a day at school.
Distractions such as loud music, conversation and cell phone use distract young drivers and are the argument for not allowing teens to transport passenger for the fist year that they have a driver's license. A St. Mary's teen, a student at Chopticon, pulled out in front of a truck at Rt. 6 and Rt. 235 at Oraville, killing her brother and another person, as well as herself. Nearly every year, a Calvert teen on the way to or from school is involved in a fatal wreck, usually causing the wreck due to inattention to the road and driver error.
Yet another teenage girl failed to yield at the intersection of Rt. 5 and Mt. Wolfe Road and killed herself and two passengers. A roadside memorial is still placed there and the SHA installed a traffic signal to prevent kids or older drivers from making mistakes of judgment and distraction. The Oraville intersection was rebuilt to prevent crossover traffic.  Story and Photos

(Nov. 5, 2007)  --- Maryland State Police Prince Frederick Barrack Commander Lt. Homer Rich told ST. MARY'S TODAY that a 17-year-old girl was killed today when a mini-van collided with a box truck near the Rt. 4 / Skinners Turn Road / Briscoe's Turn Road intersection just north of the Rt. 2/4 intersection at Sunderland.   ST. Man dead after police chase in Calvert

ABC 7 News - Police Chase Ends In Fiery Crash, Death

This 2002 ST. MARY'S TODAY editorial cartoon lambasting armed robbers has unfortunately been pertinent to news stories constantly since it was first published.  The endless supply of bandits and robbers coming out of the Washington area to prey on residents in this area frequently is a matter of black on black crime, which was the subject of one of the questions at the CNN Presidential debate this week.

Photo courtesy of ABC 7 News

DUNKIRK (Nov. 28) --- A man who was spotted at the Wal-Mart store in Prince Frederick ran from police in Calvert to a point near Dunkirk when he lost control of the vehicle he was operating and crashed, dying in the wreck.  Two others in the Jeep Cherokee were critically injured.

As the Jeep sped through the intersection northbound Maryland Route 4 at Town Center Blvd., running through the red traffic signal, it struck a 2006 Honda SUV driven by Randal L. Cooper, 51, of Chesapeake Beach, Md., and overturned, report police.  The occupants in the Jeep were trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed by emergency personnel.  The driver of the Honda was not injured.

Calvert Sheriff Mike Evans said that the Maryland State Police were conducting the investigation and that his officers had been assisting in the chase.  Sheriff Evans said that none of his deputies were hurt.

Evans said that the chase had worked out safely.

"I believe in chasing them, we can't let them go," said Sheriff Evans.

Injured in the crash were Darren D. McCoy, 39, of Bladensburg, Md. the driver, and the remaining passenger,  has been identified as Juan Francisco Canales, age 20, of Hyattsville, Prince George’s County, Maryland, according to the State Police.

McCoy was identified by troopers at the scene of the crash as the driver.  McCoy was flown by Maryland State Police helicopter, and the injured passenger was flown by U.S. Park Police helicopter, Eagle 1 to Prince George’s County Hospital with injuries described as critical at the time of the crash.

It amazes me how the level of journalism and professionalism differs from newspapers. The Washington Post reported on this same issue and yet there were no name calling, simply facts!, It is sad to see that as a newspaper you are not reporting facts and are truly speculating. Heathens???  What do their dress code has to do with anything. These are kids,  it was a fight that got out of control. Its funny that this article is so one sided. Did you paper mention that only a certain group was locked up? Or that certain students were allowed to return to school. Or that one of  proud students vandalized a home prior to this?  What did these kids do fight themselves?  It would be nice to report the entire story with some definite facts instead of National Enquirer reporting.
Kim Harley

(Editor's Note: The owner of the Washington Post doesn't live in this community and doesn't know the teachers and students at Great Mills who have difficulty in being part of a fine center of learning due to the actions of disruptive punks and heathens who fight instead of studying.  Newspapers seldom depart from dispassionate presentation of the facts, which may be why most of them are losing reader interest and suffering declining circulation, such as the Post, which is dropping like a rock.  When a publication fails to serve it's community and be an advocate, it means nothing to nobody, thus the Emptyprize, which is the plaything of the local Looney liberals, also owned by the Post.  We  not only will label heathens, punks and idiots who fight at school, assault school bus drivers and sell drugs at school, terrible names, but we will continue to call for them to be thrown out of school.  It the shoe fits, wear it.  Parents are invited to call, some already have, to talk about how their children have been victims to the minister's son, Cleaveland Hall Jr. who was put in charge of the day care for the Hollywood Worship Center and molested kids there for years prior to being allowed to plea to lesser charges...who was the Judge who let him out on work release?   Coming up.....

Burglars Must Be Shot Inside Your

Home, Don't Shoot Them on the Patio!

If you are awakened tonight and find this guy breaking into your house, just shoot him and then call police...if you can't find your gun, are out of ammo or don't want to waste the shot, then call the Charles County Sheriff's Department as they want him for allegedly committing a series of burglaries.
Charles County Crime Solvers are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Anthony Anderson Kinzer, 33, of Hughesville who is wanted for three burglaries that occurred in Hughesville between Sept. 24 and Sept. 26.  Anyone with information about Kinzer’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Charles County Sheriff’s Office at 301-932-7777 or Charles County Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS. Crime Solvers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to Kinzer’s arrest. All callers may remain anonymous.

Help for the Helldorfers?

LEONARDTOWN (Oct. 22, 2007) --- St. Mary's Commissioner Larry Jarboe says St. Mary's should extend the time frame allowed for property owners to be able to restore the use of their property following a fire, storm, hurricane, tornado or other catastrophe.  With the tornado which swept La Plata off the map in 2002, then continued on to Hughesville, hit the northern tip of St. Mary's County and then whipped through Calvert, killing 5 people, and then in 2003 Hurricane Isabel blowing a 9 foot storm surge up on land, many learned that the damage cannot be reversed in just a year or two.
Property owners are at a loss of how to deal with all of the zoning codes, agencies and insurance companies in the time allowed, one year, before losing their allowable and prior uses of their property.

Bohanan Calls Budget Bill Fiscally Sound,

Making $500 Million in Cuts;

O'Donnell Says Its All Smoke and Mirrors

ANNAPOLIS - The Maryland House of Delegates voted to cut $500 million from next year's state budget, as lawmakers continue working toward closing a projected $1.7 billion budget deficit. The cuts include eliminating 750 vacant state jobs, reducing Thornton aid and drawing $77 million out of the Health Insurance Fund balance. Republicans protested that they should have cut more, and that it is useless to propose any cuts anyway because there is no budget just yet.   STORY

15-year-old Stephanie Weir, a student from Thomas Stone is dead; 2 from Northern High School in Calvert were killed on Nov. 5th, 4 from La Plata on Nov. 6th, all as a result of driver error on the part of the teen drivers...failing to yield, speeding, just in case your parents didn't tell you, kids, the rules of the road are designed to keep you and everyone safe...its better to follow them than to stand around with candles at a vigil...

Tim Brosnihan responds: The gentleman in question cutting the ribbon is Mr. Marvin Haines.  Worked on the Naval Base.  He worked for Public works for a few years. Then spent the rest until his retirement as the Department Head of the Firing Tunnel.  Retired from Civil Service at 71yrs young.  Now deceased.  Two other readers including Gary Trevino agree that the ribbon cutter is Haines.
