Richard Allen "Ricky" Harding, Sr

Richard Allen "Ricky" Harding, Sr., 44, of Compton, MD and formerly of Mechanicsville, MD, died June 4, 2008 at his residence.

Born August 30, 1963 in Leonardtown, MD he was the son of Raymond Aloysius Harding, Sr. of Leonardtown, MD and the late Agnes Teresa Wathen Harding.

He is survived by his son Richard Harding and his wife Michelle and his daughters Jennifer and Elizabeth Harding, all of Compton, MD as well as three grandchildren; Alexis, Mackenzie and Richard Harding III. He is also survived by his siblings; Agnes Patricia VanRyswick of Leonardtown, MD, Raymond Aloysius Harding, Jr. of California, MD, Linda Anne Knott of Chaptico, MD and William Samuel Harding of Mechanicsville, MD and his extended family Shelly Knott, Gary Knott and Terri Vause. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Ellen Knott and his brother Thomas Edward Harding. A lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County, Ricky attended Chopticon High School. He was employed as a fence mechanic for 30 years with J & P, Clinton and Massey Fence. He loved to fish, hunt and spend time with his three grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, June 7, 2008 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Mechanicsville, MD with Fr. Peter Alliata officiating and Fr. Paul co-officiating. Pallbearers were Daniel Harding, David Harding, Bruce Knott, Jr., Larry Dutrow, Donnie Grinder and Semore Adams. Honorary Pallbearers were Gary Knott, William Harding, Jr., Eric Kirkpatrick, Ronald Vause, Bruce Knott, Sr. and Benjamin Harding. Contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Mary’s, P.O. William Joseph "Bill" Farrell Jr

William Joseph "Bill" Farrell Jr., 75, of Leonardtown, MD died June 7, 2008 at Washington Hospital Center.

Born July 24, 1932, in Morganza, MD he was the son of the late Edith Mabel and William Joseph Farrell Sr. He was the husband of the late Nancy Lee Farrell whom he married on January 2, 1960 in St. John’s Church, Hollywood, MD. He is survived by his son Christopher and his wife Joan and his daughter Eleanor Denise Delozier and her husband Doug as well as his grandchildren Kevin and Mike Farrell and step-grandchildren Irma and John Delozier.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 in Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic Church, Chaptico, MD with Fr. Timothy Baer officiating. Pallbearers were Robin Hammett, Jimmy Bailey, David Farrell, Billy Rice, Jay Farrell and Charles Wallace. Honorary pallbearers were: The Leonardtown Commissioners & WWT plant employees; Don Kasper, Gator Delahay and Steve Hoopengardner, Safeway employees, Ike Lee, Greg Curry, Bob Wilhoit, Buddy Long and former sheriff of St. Mary’s, Wayne Pettit. George Franklin "Frank" Sanger, Jr.

George Franklin "Frank" Sanger, Jr., 50, of Valley Lee, MD died June 6, 2008 at Georgetown University Hospital. Born October 7, 1957 in Leonardtown, MD he was the son of the late George Franklin Sr. and Elaine Mary Sanger. He is survived by his sisters: Charlotte E. Greco of Fort Meyers, FL and Judith L. Balta and her husband Francis of Valley Lee, MD, his niece Cynthia C. Hubbard and her husband Brad of Roswell, GA and his nephew Michael Greco and his wife Shannon of Fort Myers, FL. He is also survived by his great nieces and great nephews: Jacob and Joshua Hubbard and Monroe and Jackson Greco.

He obtained his Associates Degree from Charles County Community College and was employed with Wyle Laboratories as a computer analyst. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 with Msgr. Karl Chimiak officiating.

Pallbearers were: Jim Berthi, Rob Roberts, Sid Jones, Tom Bresslin, David Calvano and Philip Weeks. Honorary pallbearers were: Walter Wise, Bob Combs, Chris Combs and JB Briscoe. Dinah K. Somerville

Dinah K. Somerville, daughter of Mary Artina Dotson-Miles and the late Joseph Edward Miles, was born August 7, 1953, in Mechanicsville, Maryland, the fourth of nine children. On Sunday, June 8, 2008, Dinah, 54, of Hollywood, MD, departed this life at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D. C., after a long illness. She attended Immaculate Conception Church and later became a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary 359 and served in the position of Financial Secretary. In 1995, she relocated to Hollywood, Maryland, whereby she became of member of St. John’s Catholic Church.Dinah grew up in St. Mary’s County and attended White Marsh Elementary School, Banneker School, and graduated from Chopticon High School in 1971. During her freshman year at Chopticon, she met Charles (Charlie) Webster Somerville and they began to date.

They remained a steady couple for the next 13 years until deciding to declare their love before GOD, their family and friends on November 25, 1978, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Mechanicsville, MD. This loving union brought forth two sons, Charles Webster II and Damion Edward. Dinah was employed with the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services for over 20 years.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory her beloved and devoted husband of 30 years Charles Webster Somerville, Sr.; her two sons, Charles Webster Somerville II and Damion Edward Somerville; four grandchildren, Lexus Friend, Charles Somerville III, Krystalee Somerville, and Landon Somerville; a devoted mother Mary Artina Miles; 11 siblings, Joseph Miles, Jr., Clementine Somerville, Garnell Miles, Laura Miles, Charles Miles, Paula Miles-McDonald, Shirley Miles-Jones, Jacklyn Miles-Chesley, Ernie Miles, Clara Tyson, and Diane Reed; mother-in-law Mary E. Somerville; life-long friend of 30 years, Veronica Miles, as well as a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Ray Schmidt as the celebrant. Serving as pallbearers will be her nephews, Ernie Miles, Roy S. Chesley II, John Tyler II, Jermaine Barnes, Thomas Somerville, Jr., and Roy Person. The honorary pallbearers will be Dante’ R. Chesley, Javante Fenwick, George Somerville II and Carlos Young.

Susan Ann Pforr

Susan Ann Pforr, 66, of California, Maryland died at St. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown, MD on Monday, May 26, 2008. Born November 20, 1941 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota she was the daughter of the late Nathan and Ruth Johnson Haggar. She is survived by her husband, Richard R. Pforr; two sons Matthew Richard Pforr of Manassas, VA and Stephen Paul Pforr of Winchester, VA; two brothers Curtis Haggar of Ouray, CO and Ronald Hagger of Phoenix, AZ. Also surviving are four grandchildren. Susan was a avid golfer and a member of the Breton Bay Golf Club, Leonardtown, MD. She also like boating, bowling and visiting with her friends. John Gow (Jack) Evans, Jr.

U. S. Army WWII Veteran

John Gow (Jack) Evans, Jr. passed away peacefully on Friday, December 7, 2007 at the Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio following a brief illness. He was 86. Jack was born on October 16, 1921 in Cambridge, Maryland to Sarah Davis Evans and John Gow Evans. Jack graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1942 with a bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering. He immediately entered the US Army. He served with the US Army Corps of Engineers in North Africa and Italy. He was Honorably Discharged in 1946. He returned to Virginia Tech and obtained his Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following graduation, he moved to Toledo, Ohio to begin work with the Toledo Edison Company as an engineer. During a 37 year career, he served as plant superintendent at the ACME and Bayshore Stations and was the superintendent at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station during construction and when it became operational in 1977. He retired in 1983 as Assistant to the Vice President-Nuclear. Upon his retirement, Jack and his wife Sammy moved to California, Maryland where Jack was an avid sailor, and served on numerous community organizations including the Leonardtown Maryland Rotary Club, the California Maryland Chamber of Commerce and the Virginia Tech Alumni Association. One of his passions was working to raise college scholarship money for deserving students in southern Maryland. His other life long passion was sailing. He continued to race on the Chesapeake Bay with friends each week until he was well into his eighties. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sammy June (Pratt) Evans; son, John G. (Lisa) Evans III; two grandsons Nathan Evans and Colin Evans (Columbus, Ohio); and brother, William R. (Marie Anne) Evans of New York, NY. A gathering of friends and family will be held from 2 PM to 4PM, Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD Internment will be at Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery in Cambridge, Maryland.

Thomas Vernon Sunderland

U. S. Army WWII Veteran

Thomas Vernon Sunderland of Charlotte Hall, MD, formerly of Annapolis, MD died of natural causes on May 22, 2008. He was 89 years old. Mr. Sunderland served in the United States military during World War II. Later he reentered the service and served in Germany until 1952 where he met and married Elvira Loyal Sunderland his beloved wife. He also enjoyed dining out and he liked to jog, especially on the Naval Academy grounds where he worked until his retirement. Survived by his wife, Elvira Sunderland. A viewing will be held on June 2, 2008 at 11AM at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Rd., Charlotte Hall, MD followed by a religious ceremony at Noon. John Albert Wallace
U. S. Navy Viet Nam Veteran

John Albert Wallace, 60 of Laurel, MD died on Sunday, May 26, 2008 at Walter Reed Medical Center, Washington, DC. Born July 12, 1947 in Rabat, Morocco, son of the late Clyde A. Wallace and Anna Boudana Wallace. John graduated class of 1965 at Oxon Hill High School at Oxon Hill, MD. John was a Vietnam veteran in the U.S. Navy from 1965 until 1971 and served as a Chaplin’s aid on the battle grounds of Da Nang, Vietnam. During his time served, he received 1st Good Conduct Award, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Mr. Wallace worked for Laurel Dodge for 5 years and sold cars in the area for over 30 years. Mr. Wallace leaves behind his wife, Sandra Wallace and son, John Jay Wallace of Laurel, MD. His siblings include the late Michael S. Wallace, surviving siblings are Vivian Wallace of Orlando, FL, Sara and Dan Bedell of Mechanicsville, MD, Jane and Don Miles Kailua, HI, Charles and Angie Wallace of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Jackie and Kevin Monahan of Germantown, MD, Jennette and Marvin Wallace of North Carolina, and Ralph Vanderwaart Van Gulik. Harvey Hiram Freeman

Harvey Hiram Freeman, 85, of Charlotte Hall, MD, formerly of Bushwood, MD, died May 25, 2008 in Calvert Memorial Hospital. Born January 28, 1923, he was the son of the late Charlie Freeman and Hattie Thornton Freeman. Harvey is survived by a son, Olvin Freeman of Lexington Park, MD and a sister, Juanita Green of Bushwood, MD. He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Walker Freeman. Family will receive friends on Monday, June 2, 2008 from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Jonathan Allan officiating. Interment will follow in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.

Marian Joyce Clark Davis

Marian Joyce Clark Davis, 68 of Hollywood, Maryland died peacefully amongst family members on May 24, 2008 at her home.Born Sept 26, 1939 in Welch, WV she was the daughter of the late Roland Glen and Edna Pauline Clark.She was raised in the coal mining area of War, WV, and attended Big Creek High School with the "Rocket Boys". Joyce then attended Concord College where she earned a BA degree in Home Economics and Library Science and was a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority.She moved to Maryland in 1961 to be the librarian at the Leonardtown School, which included grades K-12.

In 1963, she became a stay at home mom until her children started school. Joyce loved being around and teaching children and during the late sixties she volunteered, and was later selected as the librarian at Greenview Knolls Elementary School, where she served as both the librarian and acting principal in the principals absence. She also attended The George Washington University earning her MS in Library Science. She retired in1999.She loved people.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Brian Chamberlain Davis; her daughter Joni Maria Davis Cummins, her husband David Alan and daughter Shannon Nicole of Hollywood; son Scott Roland Davis, his wife Ruth Marie, their twin daughters Sarah Joyce and Jenny Marie, and step daughter Mary Parent of Hollywood; her brothers Norman Glen Clark of War, WV; Charles Roland Clark of Kemper, Texas; James Melvin Clark, his wife Jamie Rappaport Clark and son Carson of Leesburg, VA; and sister Helen Clark Hickman, her husband Daryl, son Joshua and daughter Clark of Centerville, VA.

She is also survived by numerous friends and relatives in MD, WV, ME, VA, NC, and throughout the U.S.A. and Canada.Joyce, who had Myelodysplasia, foremost wished to publicly thank the Red Cross and its caring army of "blood donors" who gave over 700 units of blood she has needed this past 10 years. Furthermore, she wished to publicly thank the excellent and caring staff of doctors and nurses including: Dr Kioumarce Yazdani and the Infusion Center of Calvert Hospital; Dr B. Douglas Smith, Nurse Practitioner Valerie Ironside and Mary Beth Collins, Ericka, Diane and the other 5A nurses of Johns Hopkins; St. Mary’s Hospital, and numerous other supporting friends.

Funeral service will be held at the War Methodist Church in War, WV on Sunday June 1st; where the family will receive friends from 11 until time of service at 1pm. Internment Services will follow at the Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va.

James Varnley Payne, 76, of California, MD, died May 24, 2008 in Franklin Square Hospital, Baltimore, MD.Born September 26, 1931 in Washington, DC he was the son of the late John Colman and Hattie Trammell Payne and step-son of Hilda G. Farmer. Mr. Payne is survived by a sister Edna Dean of LaPlata, MD, a half sister Mary A. Payne of Bowie, MD, half brothers John C. Payne, Jr., Riverdale, MD, Fred F. Payne of Mechanicsville, MD, Robert Payne of Bowie, MD and Ronald Payne and a friend Allan Zemann of Baltimore, MD. He was predeceased by four sisters, Mary F. Messineo, Anne P. Hockett, Jannie L. Alberta Mae "Bertie" Mattingly Hare

Alberta Mae "Bertie" Mattingly Hare, 88, of Hollywood, MD died May 27, 2008 in Washington Hospital Center. Born February 21, 1920 in Sotterly, Hollywood, MD she was the daughter of the late James Henry and Clara Mae Mattingly. She was the loving wife of Vernon Hare whom she married on July 22, 1966 in Rockville, MD. She is survived by her children: Clara L. Miedzinski and William D. McGill both of California, MD, James Robert McGill and his wife Barbara of Hollywood, MD, Timothy Wayne McGill of Moss Point, MS and step daughter Sheila M. Pressley of Virginia Beach, VA; siblings: Sister Eleanora Mattingly of Louisville, KY, Frances Eileen Baumer of Groveport, OH, Betty Marie Hill and Margaret Eleanora "Peggy" Keller both of Lexington Park, MD; 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, 3 step grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by his siblings: Thomas Mervell Mattingly, Andrew Louis Mattingly, James Vernon Mattingly, Joseph Leonard Mattingly, Chester Sylvester Mattingly, James Henry Mattingly, George Frederick Mattingly, Wallace Alexander Mattingly and Clara Elizabeth Mattingly. Bertie was a life long St. Mary’s County resident where she worked as a homemaker. She enjoyed working with flowers and doing needle work. Joan Teresa Johnson

Joan Teresa Johnson, 56, of Lusby, died April 5, 2008 in St. Leonard following her long battle with a brain tumor.

She was born Joan Teresa Hartmann, Sept. 29, 1952 in Washington, DC., the daughter of Dr. Gregory K. and Harriet Johnston Hartmann.

Joan came from a notable background. Her father was a Rhodes scholar who was technical director of the Naval Ordnance Laboratory at White Oak for 25 years. He witnessed many "atomic effects tests" after World War II and met Albert Einstein while a student at Cal Tech. Her grandfather, Arthur Hartmann, was a virtuoso violinist who appeared with the leading orchestras of his day from the time he was a child and was a close friend of Claude Debussy. Joan inherited his talent and was an accomplished violinist. She graduated from Walter Johnson High School in 1970 and attended Montgomery College, Takoma Park and Rockville campuses; State University of New York at Geneseo; American University; and University of Maryland College Park. Among her accomplishments was arranging a "matronly looking" string quartet for a Warner Brothers movie starring Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn called "Best Friends." She arranged and performed with a jazz violin trio for Johnny Cash’s opening at the Kennedy Center and played with Buck Owens. She performed with many local musicians, including Ben Connelly and Joseph Norris, and bands, including Bay Country and the John Luskey Band. She was a strict vegetarian who loved her cats and always had raccoons in her life, teaching them to ring a small bell at her back door when they wanted peanuts.

She married Robert Johnson in 1971 when she was 18. The couple was divorced in 1984.

She is survived by her sister, Karen Maury; brothers, George and John Hartmann; and cousins, Gregory Winn and Claire Marshall.

She was predeceased by her father, Dr. Gregory K. Hartmann; and mother, Harriet. A memorial service was held by her many friends April 20, 2008 at Cremona Farm in Mechanicsville. A formal memorial service with family and friends was held May 18, 2008 at Annmarie Garden in Solomons at 3 p.m. at the Council Ring.

Her ashes will be distributed as per her request.

 Rodney Brunton

Rodney Brunton, 74, of Drum Point, died May 18, 2008, at his residence. He was born November 9, 1933, in Altoona, PA, to Camillus A. Brunton and the late Anna Margaret Stoltz.He was also preceded in death by a sister, Marita (Brunton) Brys of LaPuente. CA. He is survived by his wife, Joan C. (Gabriel) Brunton and three children, Neil B. Brunton, his wife, Jolie Ann, and two sons, Race and Chance Brunton of New Mexico; Craig P. Brunton of California and his daughter, Camille Ann Anderson and her husband Robert, and two sons Andrew and Christopher Anderson of Waldorf, MD; his father, Camillus A. Brunton, and a sister Paula R. Brown, both of San Dimas, CA. He grew up in Detroit, MI, attended DeLasalle High School; the University of Detroit, and the University of Detroit Law School, graduating in 1954 with a Juris Doctor Degree. During the Korean War, he entered the United States Air Force and traveled to numerous military bases and outposts throughout Asia and Europe as a JAG officer. During the Vietnam War, he supported our troops extensively, earning the Bronze Star. After the Vietnam War he was selected to serve as a military judge. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1989 after 32 years of military service. During the next nine years, he worked at Andrews and Bolling Air Force Bases as a civil service lawyer.His decorations include the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with 3 devices, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Longevity Service Medal with 6 devices, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Air Force Overseas Service Long Tour Ribbon with 3 devices. After his retirement from the Air Force, he settled with his family in Lusby (Drum Point), where he enjoyed gardening, crabbing, and traveling in his RV. He attended services at the Patuxent River Naval Station, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Solomons.

Susan "Susie" S. Byler

Susan "Susie" S. Byler, 83 of Mechanicsville, MD died May 20, 2008 at her residence. Born December 14, 1924 in Upper Leacock Township, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Hannah Stoltzfus.

She was the loving wife of the late Chris Z. Byler who preceded her in death on November 18, 2007 and whom she married on December 2, 1947 in Mechanicsville, MD. She is survived by her children: Hannah, wife of Israel Fisher, Rachael, wife of Andrew Swarey, Rebecca, wife of Chris T. James Edward "Jimmy" Meridith, Jr., 41, of Potterville, MI formerly of Mechanicsville, MD died May 17, 2008 in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI. Born March 12, 1967 in Leonardtown, MD he was the son of James Edward and Anita Marie Battenfield Meridith, Sr.

He is survived by his fiance’ Linda Gill of Potterville, MI and his sisters: Rachele Marie and Crystal Lea Meridith both of Mechanicsville, MD. Jimmy graduated from Chopticon High School Class of 1985. He was a lifelong St. Mary’s County resident, until 2003 when he moved to Potterville, MI. He was an avid drummer and played with various bands such as: "The Wanderers", "Timberline", "Casino", "Murphy’s Law" and many others. He loved country and rock n roll music, animals and fishing. He enjoyed telling stories and being a comedian.

Robert Francis Farrell, 75, of Bushwood, MD, died Tuesday, May 20, 2008 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown, MD.Born February 14, 1933, in Bushwood, MD, he was the son of the late William J. Farrell and Martha L. (Graves) Farrell. Bobby, as he was known to family and friends, served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953-1954. When his tour of duty ended, he returned to St. Mary’s County where he worked for many years as a waterman.

In more recent years, he worked as a driver for a local florist. He enjoyed watching all sports events, especially football and car races. Barbara Lou Knapp LeQuire

Barbara Lou Knapp LeQuire, 74, of Leonardtown, MD died May 2, 2008 in Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC.Born December 23, 1933 in Cooperstown, New York, she was the daughter of the late Charles Knapp and Hazel Dingman Knapp. Barbara was raised in Edson Corners, NY where she remained until she graduated college at Oneonta State Teachers College. She then moved to St. Mary’s County to help begin a Christian work that started off as a "kamp for kids" on the shores of the Patuxent River and ended at S.A.Y.S.F. Bible Church.

She concurrently received a position with the St. Mary’s County Public Schools at what was then Margaret Brent High School, and occupied several positions within the school system over the next forty years. Barbara was a devout Christian serving at S.A.Y.S.F. Bible Church. She taught Sunday School for forty years and participated in other various church activities such as, Operation Christian Child and Missions Committee. She loved her lord, her family, her church, and community.

Barbara is survived by her daughter K LeQuire Hall of Leonardtown, MD, three grandchildren, Fredrick, Michelle, and Bethany Hall of Leonardtown, MD and sister Blanche Knapp Ringwood of Melbourne, FL. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings, Albert Knapp and Vera Knapp.

Mildred Louise Guy Norris, 83, of Leonardtown, MD died May 8, 2008 at her residence. She was born June 17, 1924 in Leonardtown, MD to the late George Franklin and Mary Ellen Turner Guy. She was the wife of the late Ernest Ignatius Norris, Sr., whom she married on April 19, 1944. She is survived by her children, Thomas Merle Norris, Sr. and his wife Eleanor, Francis Ellen Quade, Mildred Anne Norris, all of Leonardtown, MD and Ernest Ignatius Norris, Jr. and daughter-in-law Dawn Marie Norris, both of Lusby, MD. She is also survived by her brother, Thomas Edward Guy of WV and sister, Grace Loretta Hebler of NC. Mildred has ten grandchildren: Eleanor Anne Mekus, Thomas Merle Norris Jr., Joseph Andrew Norris, James Michael Quade, Jacquelyn Michelle Greenwell, Jeanette Marie Hammon, Jennifer Lynne Cocagne, Joshua Shane Norris, Rachel Marie Norris and Erin Rochelle Norris; nine great-grandchildren: Ashley Nicole Vaniglio, Matthew Thomas Norris, Heater Marie Norris, Kacie Lynn Quade, Ashton Michael Quade, Connor James Greenwell, Timothy Wayne Abell, Michael Thomas Hammon and Trinity Jade Norris; and one great-great-grandchild, Jaylah Coryn Stephenson.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters Mary Catherine Abell and Anna Mae Ruppel and brothers Joseph Franklin Guy, Raymond Aloysius Guy, Benedict Ishmael Guy and Holland Ignatius Guy.

She was primarily a homemaker, but at times worked as a seamstress, childcare provider and a nurse’s aide. She was an extremely talented woman who could make just about anything. She made many wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses for people in the county, reupholstered furniture, made delicious stuffed hams and was an excellent cook. She crocheted beautiful afghans and special creations for family members and friends and made many bed dolls and crafts. She made beautiful and creative cakes and always made birthdays special for everyone. She was a devoted wife and mother, committed to loving and providing for her children, always putting their needs first. She was a warm and compassionate mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed by everyone.

Lewis Patrick "Pat" Thomas, 50, of Ft. Washington, MD and formerly of Chaptico, MD died May 3, 2008 in the Hospice House of Washington. Born October 30, 1957 in John’s Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD he was the son of the late James Lewis and Agnes Evangeline Thomas. Warren Clark Lamson

Mr. Warren Clark Lamson, 93, of Solomon's Island, MD died May 5, 2008 at his residence in Solomons, MD. He was born in Neligh, Nebraska, August 20, 1914 to the late John Wesley and Laura Alice Lamson. Mr. Lamson graduated from Wayne State College with a Bachelors Degree in Education in 1938, and from the University Of Nebraska Graduate School Of Social Work in 1942 with a Masters Degree in Social Work. He taught in the public schools of Nebraska for several years prior to attending graduate school.

Mr. Lamson was a World War II veteran and served from 1942-1946, in the Adjutant Generals Department of the Army as a First Lieutenant. He specialized in clinical psychology and psychiatric social work during this time. After discharge from the Army, he was employed as a Chief, Social Work Branch, Denver Regional Office of the Veterans Administration from 1946-1949. In 1949, he became a Mental Health Consultant in the United States Public Health Service Regional Office in Dallas, Texas. In 1950, he became the Chief Psychiatric Social Worker in the Community Services Branch of the National Institute of Mental Health, in Bethesda, MD. He served in several other administrative and consultative capacities in the Agency before retiring in 1974 as Chief of the Continuing Education Branch. After retirement he was employed as Chief Social Worker in the Maryland State Department of Mental Hygiene. He retired from this position in 1978.

Mr. Lamson was active at the national level in several social work organizations. He was charter member of the National Association of Social Workers and served on several commissions and committees of that organization and the Council on Social Work Education. He was a charter member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers and was a Licensed Certified Social Worker in Maryland. In 1974, he was honored by the University of Nebraska as an outstanding alumnus. In 1994, he was honored as a pioneer in social work by the National Association of Social Work. Mr. Lamson had numerous articles in mental health published in professional publications.

Mr. Lamson was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, and a member of DeWitt Lodge #111 AF&AM, DeWitt, Nebraska.

He is survived by his loving wife Julia L. "Judy" Lamson, three children, Gary W. and his wife Joan Lamson of Warren, NJ, Larry D. and his wife Francine Lamson of St. Leonard, MD and Gail L. and her husband Richard Lloyd of St. Leonard, MD, and six grandchildren Brandon, Shawn, Justin, Jeffrey, Marshall and Kristin.

Robert Gerald Perry Jr.

Robert Gerald Perry Jr., 54, HughesvilleRobert Gerald Perry Jr., 54, of Hughesville died April 26, 2008, at Civista Medical Center in La Plata, with his family by his side.He was born March 25, 1954, at Bethesda Naval Hospital, the son of Robert G. Perry and Marie Theresa Perry. He was a life-long resident of Maryland, having grown-up in Prince George’s County. He attended Holy Family Parish School, and then attended Potomac Senior High School, where he began to develop a life-long relationship with his high-school sweetheart, Rhea Sue Swaney, who later became his wife on Aug. 31, 1974. From their union were born three children.

He was an employee of the U.S. Government at the Architect of the Capitol for 29 years.He was a devout Roman-Catholic; a devoted husband and father; a proud Republican; an avid reader of novels, particularly history as he was a history buff; had a love of motorcycles that he passed on to his children; had a love of animals, especially dogs; enjoyed playing cards with his family and spending time in casinos with his wife, in either Las Vegas or Atlantic City; enjoyed debating politics; and was most recently looking forward to the birth of their first grandchild.He was preceded in death by his father; and sisters, Donna Speleos and JoAnne Bowdish.

He is survived by his wife; mother; mother-in-law, Mildred C. Swaney; sons, Robert G. Perry III, Kevin Michael Perry and his wife, Sarah, and Raymond Daniel Perry; brother, John Perry; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Ronald Allen Sisk

Ronald Allen Sisk, 41, of Drum Point, Lusby, MD passed away at home on April 29, 2008.

Ronnie was born at Providence Hospital in Washington, DC on July 28, 1966. He grew up and lived the majority of his life in Drum Point. Ronnie graduated from Calvert High School in 1985, where he was affectionately know as "Birdman" or " Baby Jesus". In 1988 he married Melissa "Missy" and is the father of Ronnie, II, Casey, and Robbie Sisk. He is also survived by his parents, Ginger and Dennis Dugan, and brother of Robert A., Richard A. and Kristine Sisk.

Ron adored his children and always participated in their interests, from coaching T ball teams to cheerleading at swim meets. He loved the outdoors, riding his motorcycle with friends and the occaisonal bike week event. Ron enjoyed deer hunting, when he could find the time, and also enjoyed raising quail in a backyard coupe. He loved to express his artistic talent by drawing, doodling, or creating things with his hands like his wire bonsai trees.

Ron spent much of the last 20 years working for various D.O.D. contract companies at Patuxent River NAS, Solomons Rec. Center and Fort Meade Army Base. He was very proud to be co-owner and CEO of R.A. Sisk Lighting and Electric, Inc., which he operated for over 10 years.

Ronnie was a beloved Grandson, Son, Brother, Husband, and Father. He will be missed terribly by all those having the chance to know and love him.

Theresa Ruth "Sissy Girl" Combs, 81, of Great Mills, MD died April 19, 2008 in St. Mary’s Nursing Center. Born October 21, 1926 in Great Mills, MD she was the daughter of the late Thomas Leonard and Martha Mary Combs, Sr. She is survived by 1 sister Veronica M. Johnson of Great Mills, MD and a host of nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her siblings: Noemi Evans, Agatha Wildoner, Thomas L. Combs, Jr. and John A. Combs. Ms. Combs loved cats, making jewelry, doing puzzles and painting, drinking Coke, eating Little Debbie snacks, listening to Elvis and hoola dancing. Edsel Bruce Potter

Edsel Bruce Potter, 83, of California, MD died April 22, 2008 in Calvert Memorial Hospital, Prince Frederick, MD. Born August 18, 1924 in Dahlgren, VA, he was the son of the late Vennie Marcelus Potter and Carrie Belle Pounds Potter. He treasured his family and friends. He enjoyed his life as a Civil Servant working aboard the Patuxent River Naval Air Station for 42 years.

His passion was to hunt and fish whenever possible. Hunting was his life and he always aimed for excellence at his sport. He also had a passion for carving and painting wooden duck decoys. He was also a lifelong member of NARFE, Chapter 969 of St. Mary’s County and a member of Ducks Unlimited. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Angeline Potter, his children Yvonne Moss of Marco Island, FL, Gary Potter of St. George Island, MD, his sisters, Jean Whittemore of Herndon, VA, JoAnn Schlusemeyer of Vienna, VA and Elvy Hovarter of Ashland, WI. He was the father-in-law of Brian Moss and Denise Hanson-Potter and the grandfather of Jason Todd Wright of Washington, DC and Benjamin Edsel Potter of St. George Island, MD.

Mr. Potter was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian David Wright. Butler.Mrs. Taylor moved to St. Mary’s county in 1981. Carolyn was a Manager for one of Burch Oil, Company’s Amoco Gas Stations. She enjoyed crocheting, collecting antiques and the Country Diva’s store at farmers market; she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She also loved spoiling her grandchildren.In addition to her mother she is survived by her husband of 34 years, Donald J. Taylor, Sr., children; Elizabeth L. Stephens, (Jerry), Donald J. Taylor, Jr., and Kelly J. Frances "Dink" Claudia Dyer Bell, 72, of Callaway, MD died April 12, 2008 at her home. Born November 2, 1935 in Drayden, MD she was the daughter of Ruth A. Guy of Callaway, MD and the late Turner Dyer. She is survived by her companion Chuck Charles; children: Anna Mae Pilkerton Dean and her husband Danny B. Dean, Sr. of Drayden, MD, Sharon E. Pilkerton and her companion Mark Thomas of Callaway, MD and Wayne Pilkerton and his companion Dale Abell of Great Mills, MD; grandchildren: Michele Dean Jordan and her husband Jamie Jordan, Danny B. Dortha Mae Spratt, 82, of Tall Timbers, MD died peacefully on April 16, 2008 at St. Mary’s Nursing Center, Leonardtown, MD. Born October 23, 1925 in Calvin, OK, she was the daughter of the late Ruby G. Gaddy Lowe and Loranzy Jennings Lowe.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Edgar H. "Buddy" Spratt. They enjoyed boating for many years on the "Jandolin" in Southern Maryland. She was a retiree of the Central Intelligence Agency.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda S. Green of Herndon, VA, Janis L. Adams of Valley Lee, MD, two grandsons, Matthew T. Green of Chicago, IL and Adam R. Faye Winifred Fort

Faye Winifred Fort, 62, of Avenue, MD died April 12, 2008 at her daughter’s residence in Avenue, MD.

Born May 29, 1945 in Athens, Ohio, she was the daughter of Winifred Baldry Eslocker of California, MD and the late Don Franklin Eslocker.

Faye was a long time resident of Fort Washington, MD before moving to the area five years ago. She was truly a devoted mother, grandmother, and daughter. She would spend every Saturday with her mother and every free moment with her family.

She was devoted to her faith, loved to crochet, enjoyed attending teas, and was well known to many people in the area from her employment as an OTC Manager with Wal-Mart in LaPlata, MD.

Faye is survived by her dear mother, Winifred Eslocker of California, MD, her loving children Laura Fort and Rochelle Hogan of Avenue, MD, Michael Fort and Heather Ludeker of WV. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren, her sisters, Kathryn Butler of Midland, VA and Joan Crownover of LaPlata, MD, and her brother Lawrence Eslocker of Magnolia, TX.The family will receive friends for a celebration of Faye’s life on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, 20770 Seth Court, Callaway, MD. Thomas "Tommy Dyson" J. Saunders, 38, of Lexington Park died April 11, 2008 in Prince George’s Hospital in Cheverly, MD. Born March 10, 1970 in Leonardtown, MD he was the son of Christine Saunders and the late Joseph C. Dyson. Tommy was a graduate of Great Mills High School in Lexington Park. He enjoyed music and spending time with his family and many friends.

Thomas Miles Murray, Jr

U.S. Navy Veteran

Thomas Miles Murray, Jr., 67 passed away on April 10, 2008 at Civista Medical Center in La Plata. Mr. Murray was born in Morristown, New Jersey and relocate to Maryland with his parents, the late Thomas M. Murray, Sr. and Gertrude Lade Murray, in 1958. He attended Edmonson High School in Baltimore before joining the Navy in 1959. He served aboard the USS Lawrence, a guided missled destroyer, in blockade operations during the Cuban Missle Crisis of October, 1962.

After his Navy service, Mr. Murray worked for Western Electric Co. for many years installing telecommunication equipment in Faulkner, Maryland, and later settled in La Plata in 1966. In addition to his professional life, Mr. Murray is best known for his thoughtfulness of others, story-telling of past events, and a great sense of humor. Devoted husband to wife of 44 years, the former Helen Cipriano, preceded him in death on January 27, 2008.

Loving father to Robert M. Murray with Christine Riddle of Middle River; Colleen L. Martin with Louis of Stuart, Florida; Stephen M. Murray with Christy of La Plata; and loving grandfather "pappy" to Katherine and Danielle Murray of La Plata; and Farren, Braden and Delaney Martin of Stuart, Florida. Also surving are his siblings Mary Jean Parrott of Elkridge; and Michael A. Murray of Columbia.

A Life Celebration was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church-Newport Parish on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. Interment in the Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers will be the St. Mary’s Catholic Church-Newport Parish.

 



Kathleen "Kitty" Brown Hayden

Kathleen "Kitty" Brown Hayden, 91, of Leonardtown, MD died April 7, 2008 at St. Mary’s Nursing Center. Born March 10, 1917 on St. George’s Island, MD she was the daughter of the late Joseph Bennett and Frances Ruth Potter Brown. She was the loving wife of James B. Hayden, Jr. whom she married on August 17, 1935 and who preceded her in death on April 24, 1977.

She is survived by her children: Allan J. Hayden and his wife Jane and Frances H. Long and her husband Buddy all of Leonardtown, MD, James B. Hayden, III and his wife Brenda of Whitsett, NC and Cheryl E. Raymond and her husband Don of Lexington Park, MD; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her sister Mabel B. Simpkins.

Kitty was a life long St. Mary’s County resident, where she graduated from Great Mills High School on June 12, 1933. She was employed as a math technician in N.A.S., NATC, Patuxent River, MD for 27 years until her retirement on March 19, 1982. She enjoyed playing bridge and crocheting.

Rose "Rosie" Marie Connelly

Rose "Rosie" Marie Connelly, 61, of Leonardtown, MD died April 6, 2008 at her residence. Born December 23, 1946 in Leonardtown, MD she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Margaret Theresa Russell Connelly.

She was the loving wife of Hershel V. "Jr." McLeod whom she married on December 30, 1988. She is survived by her brother G. Martin Connelly, Sr. and his wife Fern of Leonardtown, MD, her nephews G.M. Connelly, Jr. of Baltimore, MD and Michael Connelly of Leonardtown, MD and her niece Michelle Connelly of Leonardtown, MD; She was preceded in death by her sister Linda Reed Connelly. Rosie was a life long St. Mary’s County resident where she graduated from Leonardtown High School, Class of 1963. She was employed for 33 years at the AT&T Telephone Company as a storekeeper and retired in 1996. At the time of her death, she was employed by Wentworth’s Nursery, Prince Frederick, MD, where she was a loyal employee for over 20 years and her employees were like her second family in which she loved to laugh and joke with. Rosie was a fun loving and hard working woman, if you knew her, you loved her.

Her laughter was contagious and her house the "funny farm" described her perfectly, she had dogs, geese, turkeys, goats and over 50 chickens. All of these animals had individual names in which Rosie had given them. Perhaps her favorite was her dog Sugar Bear, since she had no children, Sugar Bear was like her child. She enjoyed gardening, yellow roses, collecting Boyd’s Bears, animals, getting pedicures, going to Starbucks, collecting hats and Crown Royal. Rosie truly had a zest for life. Her brother Martin was the apple of her eye; they always had many funny stories to tell on each other.

Everything was always about "Marty" and his family. Rosie will be greatly missed and will always be remembered as a great friend, loving sister, crazy aunt, hard worker, true country girl and an angel sent from God. We Love You Rosie!

The family held a funeral service on April 6th with Deacon Lou Koeniger officiating. Interment will be Private.

Shelby Anna Lowmiller

Shelby Anna Lowmiller, 16, of California, MD died April 6, 2008 in Leonardtown, MD.

Born August 17, 1991 in Leonardtown, MD she was the daughter of Robert Lowmiller of California, MD and Debi Tinsley of Leonardtown, MD. She is survived by her siblings: Ashley and Dylan Lowmiller both of California, MD grandparents: Joe and Dot Goodwin of Fl formerly of Coltons Point, MD and Bob and Audrey Lowmiller of WV formerly of Leonardtown, MD. Shelby was a life long St. Mary’s County resident where she was a student.

 Thomas Carroll "Teddy Bear" Farrell

Thomas Carroll "Teddy Bear" Farrell, Sr., 58, of Colton’s Point, MD and formerly of Sevierville, TN died April 6, 2008 in St. Mary’s Hospital.

Born March 19, 1950 in Washington DC, he was the son of the late Carroll Jenkins Farrell and Agnes Opal Farrell of Colton’s Point, MD. He was the beloved husband of Marie Leslie Farrell whom he married on December 15, 1991 in La Plata, MD.

He is survived by his children; Thomas Abel, Jr. of Huntingtown, MD, J.R. Farrell and his wife Teresa of Town Creek, MD, Angela Daras and her husband John of Bryans Road, MD, James Cage and Jessica Cage both of Accokeek, MD as well as seven grandchildren, Marilee, Tommy, Tyler, Marlayna, Ashley, Holli and Sylvia. He is also survived by his siblings Belinda J. Farrell of Lexington Park, MD and Sandra D. Quade and Ronald L. Farrell, both of Colton’s Point, MD. He attended Suitland High School and moved to St. Mary’s County in 1975. He was employed as a plumber for the U.S. Capitol for 36 years, retiring in 2001. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970 and was one of the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles."

He belonged to the American Legion and the VFW. He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching NASCAR racing and had an extensive Dale Earnhardt, Sr. collection, He inherited what the family calls the "Mattingly’s Curse," therefore, he became a perfectionist with cleanliness. Tommy always enjoyed landscaping from his own yard, to his mother’s and others.

Ruth T. "Tommi" Baker

Ruth T. "Tommi" Baker, 82 of Great Mills, MD died April 5, 2008 at Bayside Care Center.

Born August 18, 1925 in Killen, AL she was the daughter of the late Thomas Gibbs and Sarah Peden Segers. She was the loving wife of the late Estil Aaron Baker, Jr. whom she married on November 20, 1960 in the Unitarian Church of Annapolis, MD and who preceded her in death on March 4, 2000.

She is survived by her children Joel T. Griggs of Lexington Park, MD, Clyde Griggs of Clinton, MD and Gloria Greer of Calvert County, MD, her siblings; Carl and Jimmy Segers of TN, George Segers, Ella Myrich, Ruby Pettus and Virginia McMullen, all of AL as well as ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Christine Augusta Murphy

Christine Augusta Murphy, 86 of Mechanicsville, MD formerly of Temple Hill, MD, died on March 29, 2008 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Born July 10, 1921 in Marshfield, Wisconsin, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Mollie Dix Sadowska. Mrs. Murphy was a retired Telephone Operator for the U.S. Senate. She loved visiting with family and reading to her grandchildren, she enjoyed sports, especially football (Washington Redskins), baseball (Yankees and Braves) and puzzle books and word search. In addition to her parents Mrs. Murphy was preceded in death by her husband Bernard Paul Murphy.

She is survived by her son Paul F. Murphy, daughter Maureen A. Montgomery, grandchildren, Jennifer A. Risinger, Ryan J. Montgomery and Mollie T. Murphy and great grandchildren, Nicholas C. Risinger, Nicole R. Montgomery and Shannon E. Montgomery.

Judith Kathleen Asmussen, 54, of Lexington Park, MD died March 31, 2008 in Georgetown University Hospital. Born September 22, 1953 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of Nellie Kline Mawson and the late Joseph Harvey Mawson.

Judy attended Central High School in Capitol Heights, MD. She enjoyed playing Bingo, cooking, and spending time with her family.

Judy also enjoyed playing cards with her family. Judy is survived by her husband, William L. Asmussen, Jr., her children; William L. Asmussen of Lexington Park, MD, Daniel W. Asmussen of Lexington Park, MD, and Cindy M. Asmussen of Tall Timbers, MD, siblings; Barbara Garrison of Hollywood, MD, Debra Smith of St. Leonard, MD, Patricia Tippett, Mary Trejo, Steven Mawson and Vicky McKissick all of Lexington Park, MD, grandchildren; Allen, Andrea, Amber, and Daniel Asmussen.

Joseph George Bilko
U. S. Army Air Corps WWII Veteran

Joseph George Bilko, 82, of Leonardtown, MD died April 3, 2008 in St. Mary’s Nursing Center.

Born February 1, 1926 in McKeey’s Rocks, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph Bilko and Anna Stec Bilko. Joseph was a long time resident of Beaver, PA where he graduated from high school in 1944, worked for Westinghouse Electric as a tool and die maker for thirty eight years, and was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Parish. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He graduated from the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics in 1947 as a master mechanic. He then served in the Air Force during the Korean War. Joseph moved to Mims, FL where he built his retirement home in 1985 and was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. In 2007, he moved with his wife Caroline to Cedar Lane Apartments in Leonardtown, MD where he was a member of Our Lady’s Parish. His favorite pastimes were fishing, gardening and going to Disney World. Joseph is survived by his wife Caroline Leona Bilko whom he married on May 28, 1948, his sons Joseph of Tall Timbers, MD, John of Waynesboro, PA, sisters in law, Sallie and Susan, and granddaughter, Sallie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Cochran of Monaca, PA. Kevin Alan Paschal, 36 of Hughesville, MD formerly of Ft. Washington, MD, died on March 31, 2008 at his residence.

Born January 5, 1972 in Washington, DC. He was the son of Lawrence Delano and Alice Joyce Smith Paschal of Hughesville, MD.Mr. Paschal was a graduate of Friendly High School. He drove for Larry’s Towing in Ft. Washington, MD; he towed, reconditioned and sold cars.

He enjoyed many things, traveling, deer hunting, fishing, bowling, football and going to the gym, he was also an animal lover. The best thing in his life was when his son Dillon was born. Kevin always wanted his family to be proud of him.Kevin is survived by his son Dillon Abston, siblings; Sheila Atkins, Larry Paschal, Danny Paschal, Roger Paschal and Brian Paschal, aunts and uncles; Edward Smith, Liz Benning, Eleanor Walker, Dorothy Forrest, Bill Smith, Estella Akers, Rhema Cales and Betty Aliff.

A Service was held on Saturday, April 5, 2008.

Catherine Winifred Angeluzzi, 84, of Lexington Park, MD died March 4, 2008 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown, MD. Born July 26, 1923 in Duquesne, PA, she was the daughter of the late John Joseph Begley and Agnes McNulty Begley. Mrs. Angeluzzi was a homemaker. She is survived by two sons, Jay David Angeluzzi of Portland, OR, Kenneth John Angeluzzi of Lexington Park, MD, and two grandchildren, David B. Angeluzzi and Diana B. Angeluzzi.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jay Angeluzzi in 2001 and a sister, Agnes Laurich.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 15, 2008 in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Lexington Park, MD.

Virginia Frances "Ginny" Mishou

Virginia Frances "Ginny" Mishou, 76, of Lusby, MD died March 7, 2008 at the Calvert County Nursing Center.

She was born September 13, 1931 in Lusby, MD to the late Malcolm and Madeline Dowell. She was the loving wife of the late Joe Mishou whom she married on May 26, 1950 in Lusby, MD. Ginny is survived by three children; Gary Mishou and wife Diann of St. Leonard, MD, Michael Mishou and wife Marilyn of Davidsonville, MD, Joanne Sheran and husband Robert of Lusby, MD; two sisters; Eula Mae McCready, and Agnes Allegra and husband Anthony all of Lusby, MD; one brother; Donald Dowell and wife Grace of Sunderland, MD; ten grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Ginny was a lifelong Calvert County resident and graduated from Calvert High School in 1948.

She was the United States Post Master in Lusby, MD for 31 years until her retirement on April 26, 1986. Ginny was about family and one of her passions in life was to be the family cheerleader.

She loved to attend all of her children and grandchildren’s activities supporting them in any way she could. Acting as pallbears were Chase Mishou, Paul Sheran, Michael Mishou, Gary Mishou, Kyle Mishou, Jacob Mishou, and Riley Mishou.

Emily Virginia "Cookie" Speciale

Emily Virginia "Cookie" Speciale, 87, of Lusby, MD passed away on March 6, 2008 at the Solomons Nursing Center.

She was born February 5, 1921in Batimore, MD. Emily was the loving wife of the late John Richard Speciale who proceded her in death on March 10, 2004. She was also proceded in death by two children Richard Speciale and Janet Wines.

She is survived by one son James Speciale and his wife Darlene of Lusby, MD; six grandchildren , and eight great grandchildren. Cookie belonged to the American Legion Post 274 and was a member of the Golden Girls. She loved catering food, playing golf, bowling, and a good hand of cards. The family will receive friend on Monday, March 10,2008 from 2PM – 4PM and 6PM – 8PM in the Rausch Funeral Home Chapel, Lusby, MD.

Edward George Winnicki

U.S. Navy WWII Veteran

Edward George Winnicki, 89, of Leonardtown, MD and formerly of Watertown, MA died March 11, 2008 at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Born January 16, 1919 in Detroit, MI he was the son of the late Juzef and Lucyja Jarkoska Winnicki.

He was the loving husband of Carmena Winnicki who preceded him death on January 11, 2000. He is survived by his daughter Luci Koranek and her husband Rick of Chaptico, MD as well as five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and his sister Helen Chwastek of Kalkaska, MI.

He was preceded in death by his siblings; Joe, Walter, Stanley and Steven Winnicki and Zigmund Gutowski.

Mr. Winnicki served in the United States Navy for four years during WWII. He moved to St. Mary’s County in 1997 from Watertown, MA where he was employed as a caretaker for the Archdiocese of Boston. He loved baseball and working in the yard.

Howard Shorter

Howard Shorter, 94, of Leonardtown, MD formerly of Scotland, MD died March 6, 2008 in St. Mary’s Hospital. Born October 12, 1913 in Scotland, MD he was the son of the late Mackinley and Helen Handy-White Shorter.

He was preceded in death by his wife Geneva Listine on July 31, 1986, whom he married in 1934 in Scotland, MD. He is survived by his children: Melvin Bryant of Sterling, VA, Alice King of Uniontown, PA, Eddie Shorter of Washington, DC, Ethel Thompson and Helen Wedge both of Lexington Park, MD; siblings: Francis White of Eastern Shore, MD, Margaret White, Preston White and Virginia White all of Lexington Park, MD; 17 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren.

He is also preceded in death by his children: Ada Went and Clarence Shorter; siblings: Clara White, Lena White, Patsy White, Hilda White and Caleb White. Mr. Shorter was a life long St. Mary’s County resident, where he worked as a painter for the Patuxent River Naval Base.

He received a Certificate of Devoted Service from St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and he was inducted into the "Saved By The Belt Club." He was a member a member of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge F. and A.M. of Maryland from 1967-1970. Services were held March 12th. Pallbearers were: Thomas Gordon, Christopher Roach, Marcus Parker, Robert Jefferson, Robert White and Merwyn White. Honorary Pallbearers were: Slyvester Barnes, Julian Taylor and Joseph Taylor, Jr.

Lucy Pearl Vaughan

Lucy Pearl Vaughn, 84 of Great Mills, MD died March 10, 2008 in Bayside Care Center, Lexington Park, MD. Born January 30, 1924 in Ford City, PA, she was the daughter of the late Adam Bonieckie and Mary Thomkulska Bonieckie. Mrs. Vaughn was a homemaker. She is survived by a daughter, Dianne Vaughn of Great Mills, MD, a son, Michael E. Vaughn of Lexington Park, MD and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Vaughn was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard B. Vaughn in 1994. Sandra R. Dorwart

Sandra Ruth Dorwart, 47 of Hughesville, MD after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer, departed this veil of tears on March 10, 2008 at her home.Born July 3, 1960 in Washington, DC, Sandra graduated from Thomas Stone High School and also attended CSM. She was employed by the Department of the Navy as a Computer Specialist at Pax River.

Sandi loved all outdoor activities, fast boating, crabbing, fishing, camping at Goosebay Marina and especially her times at the beach with her family. Her dog Baby was her constant companionShe leaves to mourn her daughter, Cara Rochelle Dorwart, her loving parents, Frank X. and Mary Ann Dorwart, siblings; Theresa Boswell, Steve Dorwart, Angela Trigonoplos, Cecelia Ann Dorwart, William Dorwart and Robert Dorwart, Sr., Godchild; Dominic Dorwart, also survived by many nieces and nephews. Sandi was preceded in death by her brother Timothy Dorwart.

A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted on March 13, 2008 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Thomas Gude as the celebrant.

Frank J. Jurovaty

Frank J. Jurovaty, 86, died February 12, 2008 at his residence in St. Mary’s City, MD. He was born on April 28, 1921 in St. Inigoes, MD. He was the son of the late John and Katherina Jurovaty. He is survived by his wife, Mildred B. Jurovaty, niece Ilah Russell, nephew Michael Lang, Jr. and special cousins Roma and Frank Muro of Great Mills, MD.

He was preceded in death by his sisters Jennie (Jean) De Pasquale, Cecilia Catron and Katherina (Kitty) Lang. He worked at the U.S. Naval Air Test Center Patuxent River, MD in the Flight Test Department until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II with honors. The family will receive friends Friday, February 15 at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in St. Mary’s City, MD from 5PM to 7 PM with prayers at 6 PM.

John Francis "Johnny P." Pingleton, 72, of Clements, MD died Monday, February 11, 2008 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, Maryland. Johnny was born on June 15, 1935 in Leonardtown, Maryland.

He was the son of the late Joseph Austin Pingleton and Julia Helen Hill Pingleton. He was the husband of Sarah Jean Hammett Pingleton, whom he married on September 3, 1960 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Morganza, MD. He is survived by his brother Wayne Austin Pingleton and his wife Carol Ann of Bushwood, MD. Johnny was preceded in death by his brother George Arthur Pingleton. He is survived by his children Glenda Marie Quade and her husband Wayne of La Plata, MD, Joseph Patrick Pingleton and his wife Natalie of Clements, MD and Kimberly Ann Pilkerton and her husband William "Billy" of California, MD. In addition, he is survived by his sister-in-laws Barbara Ann Gardner and her husband Thomas "Bing" of California, MD, Mary Agnes Plunkett and her husband Russell of Clements, Nancy Lee Miller and her husband Tom of Fayetteville, PA and Rita Catherine Farr and her husband Joseph "Jay" of Leonardtown, brother-in-law Howard Vincent "Butch" Hammett, Jr. and his wife Judi of Amherst, VA and his four grandchildren, Haley Christine Quade, Allison Renee Deese, Jessica Cecelia Pilkerton and Jacob Patrick Pingleton. Johnny attended Margaret Brent High School. His work experience included Bailey Express, Mattingly Trucking and Pilkerton’s Service Center. He worked for the International Pipe Trades Joint Training Committee in Washington, D.C. for 25 years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. Also, he was dedicated to the responsibilities of being a good shipping & receiving clerk.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Bushwood, MD for nearly 40 years. He was a very active and dedicated member of the Seventh District Optimist Club for 38 years. He loved NASCAR races, Dirt Track Racing and playing cards with his friends Tucker, Richard, Phil, Jimmy, Joe and Smitty. In addition, he looked forward to the annual family and extended family vacations in Ocean City, Maryland.

Francis Xavier "Bubba" Wood

Francis Xavier "Bubba" Wood, 76, of Leonardtown, MD died February 4, 2008 at his residence. Born May 26, 1931 in Richmond, VA he was the son of the late Agnes V. Wood. He was the beloved husband of Mary Edith Wood whom he married on April 8, 1953 in Leonardtown, MD. He is survived by his children: David M. Wood and his wife Cyndi of Hollywood, MD, Bruce A. Wood and his wife Carol of Lusby, MD and Mark A. Wood and his wife Chrissy of Avenue, MD as well as seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brothers William R. McGee of AL and Raymond McGee of GA. Mr. Wood was a life long St. Mary’s County resident, graduating from military school in 1949.

He served in the US Army from 1949 to 1953 and was stationed in Korea and was a charter member and past president of the 3rd & 6th District Rescue Squads and a member of Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department.

He was an engineer for Southern Maryland Electric, retiring in 1985 after 32 years of employment. Born February 27, 1949 in Leonardtown, MD he was the son of the late John William and Edna Mae Ellis, Sr. He was the loving husband of Brenda Lee Ellis whom he married on February 26, 1973 in Norfolk, VA. He is survived by his children: Mike Ellis and his wife Rebecca of California, MD, Wendy Ellis and her fiance’ Michael Lee, Sr. of Leonardtown, MD and Cindy Longfield and her husband Patrick of Hollywood, MD; siblings: Anne Aeby of Newark, OH, Joseph Ellis of Harrington, DE, June Twinam, Bernard Ellis, Donald Ellis and Lillian Prettyman all of Leonardtown, MD, Mary C. Gilkerson of Danese, WV, Peggy Johnston of California, MD, Dorothy Brown and Charles Ellis both of Dunn, NC; 9 grandchildren: Emily Lee and Alexis Longfield both of Dameron, MD, Christian Ellis, Madison Ellis and Jordan Ellis all of California, MD, Bryan McDonald and Chase Longfield both of Hollywood, MD and Michael Lee, Jr. of Leonardtown, MD.

He was also preceded in death by his siblings: John Ellis, Jr., James Ellis and Walter Ellis; granddaughter: Kimberly Ellis. Mr. Ellis was a life long St. Mary’s County resident where he graduated from Chopticon High School Class of 1967.

He worked for 42 years as an auto mechanic. He enjoyed fishing, shooting pool, playing cards, watching wrestling and old westerns, going for walks, telling stories, listening to music and spending time with his family.

John Donald Tennyson

John Donald Tennyson, 93, of Chaptico, MD, and formerly of Avenue, MD, died February 3, 2008 at his residence. Born December 12, 1914 in Leonardtown, MD he was the son of the late George S. and Mary Ruth Mattingly Tennyson.

He is survived by his children John D. Tennyson, Jr. and his wife Lois A. of Avenue, MD and Dorothy E. Reynolds and her late husband Richard B. of Chaptico, MD, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Evelyn Hutchinson of Clinton, MD. He was preceded in death by his brothers Joseph Kelly and George S. Tennyson.

A lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County, Seventh District, John attended River Springs School and was employed as a waterman. He was a loving and devoted single father to Donnie and Dottie.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Morganza, MD with Fr. Keith Woods officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Joseph Frederick "Fred" Bowles, 89, of Loveville, MD died February 3, 2008 in St. Mary’s Hospital. Born September 29, 1918 in Loveville, MD he was the son of the late William Alfred and Rena Olivia Bowles. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Frances Nina Bowles: his children: Joan Olivia Snodderly of Mechanicsville, MD and Donna Marie Adams of Hollywood, MD and two grandchildren, Derek Ryan Adams and Michaela Marie Adams. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law George R. Adams, Jr. and his siblings; Mabel Cooke, Catherine Boyer, Emily Council, Alice, Daniel, William, Elmer and Olivia Bowles.

Mr. Bowles was a life long St. Mary’s County resident where he graduated from Margaret Brent High School. He served in the U.S. Army from April 30, 1941 – June 6, 1941 and was employed as a pipe insulator for Patuxent River Naval Air Station for 31 years, retiring on June 28, 1974.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling and especially spending time with his grandchildren. Donald Garfield "Pop Pop" Holton

Donald Garfield "Pop Pop" Holton, 61, of Hughesville, MD formerly of Oakville, MD died February 2, 2008 in St. Mary’s County.

Born April 1, 1946 in Washington, DC he was the son of James Edward Key and the late Mary Cecilia Holton. He is survived by his children: James S. Dorsey, James Knott, Mary A. Knott, Carolyn T. Green and Felicia M. Dorsey and 11 grandchildren: DeAndre L. Dorsey, Lakeisha R. Dorsey, Jamara S. Dorsey, Jazmen R. Dorsey, Angelica M. Emory, Omar T. Emory, Shaneal Parker, Candis Knott, Shyron Parker, Sterling Green, II and Mareecka’ Green. Mr. Holton was a life long St. Mary’s County resident where he graduated from Banneker High School Class of 1964.

He worked as a grounds keeper for the Charlotte Hall Veteran’s Home where he retired in 1986 and received an Outstanding Service Award also in 1986. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, riding and walking the roads of St. Mary’s County to visit and/or help family and friends.

Jerry "JJ" Keith Brash, Jr., 23 of Mechanicsville, MD, died at Georgetown University Hospital. Born December 19, 1984 in Leonardtown, MD, he was the son of Jerry K. and Annette M. Brash.

JJ was a life long resident of St. Mary’s County he attended Chopticon High School, he was a Welder, JJ enjoyed many things, working on his cars, Rap music and drawing. He collected Michael Jordan shoes and clothing. He loved his family and was kind and always looked out for the little guy.

Lewis Theodore "Ted" Birch, 53, of Piney Point, MD died January 30, 2008 in John Hopkins University Hospital, Baltimore, MD. Born February 25, 1954 in Leonardtown, MD he was the son of Raymond Thompson and Ada Stone Birch. He was the beloved husband of Agnes Elizabeth Goddard Birch whom he married on December 8, 1979 in Leonardtown, MD.

He is survived by his children: Tammy Vincena and her husband Bill, Ruthie Birch, Ben Birch and Katie Birch; siblings: Tom Ray Birch, Randy Birch, Gail Dean, Joe Birch, Judy Free, Lou Lou Pulliam, Cheryl Rogers and Janet Jenkins and 2 grandchildren. Mr. Birch was a life long St. Mary’s County resident, where he graduated from Great Mills High School Class of 1972.

Ted served in the U.S. Navy for 6 years from February 9, 1973 – April 23, 1979. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, crabbing and making wood carvings.

Mary Dora Morris Gibson, 90, of Abell, MD died January 29, 2008 at her residence. Born June 25, 1917 in Abell, MD she was the daughter of the late John Foster and Frances Geneva Ellis Morris. She was preceded in death by her husband John David Gibson, Sr. on April 20, 1993 in St. Mary’s Hospital; they were married on April 19, 1942 in Washington, DC.

She is survived by her children: John David Gibson, Jr. and his wife Phyllis of Avenue, MD and Frances Dolores Burch of Abell, MD; sister: Eunice Marie Morris Guy of Mechanicsville, MD; grandchildren: Pamela Long and her husband Paul of Hollywood, MD, Lisa Buckler and her husband Glenn of Avenue, MD, Gerald Burch and his wife Nancy of Mechanicsville, MD and Charles Burch of Abell, MD and 11 great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her siblings: Joseph Earl "Popeye" Morris, Charles Ernest "Tootsie" Morris, Frank Victor Morris, John Sylvester "Neutsie" Morris, Irvin Foster "Piggy" Morris and James Bernard Morris.

Mrs. Gibson was a life long St. Mary’s County resident, where she attended River Springs High School. She enjoyed playing bingo and cards, making ceramics, gardening and spending time on the water.

Mary Ruth "Ruthie" Delozier, 63, of Loveville, MD died January 29, 2008 in St. Mary’s Hospital. Born October 1, 1944 in Leonardtown, MD she was the daughter of the late Joseph Alton and Rita Louise Vallandingham Bailey.

She is survived by her ex-husband John Wayne Delozier, Sr.; children, J. Wayne Delozier, Jr., of Leonardtown, MD, Bryan A. Delozier of Ridge, MD and M. Dawn Delozier of Loveville, MD; siblings, Karen Rogers of Baltimore, MD, Joseph A. Bailey and Bridgett Abell both of Loveville, MD; grandchildren, Ashley Mattingly of Lexington Park, MD, Amber Delozier of OK, Shyann Delozier of Hollywood, MD (children of J. Wayne Delozier) and Sebastian Yotko of Hollywood, MD (son of M. Dawn Delozier/Yotko and Jason Yotko).

A lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County, Ruthie graduated from St. Mary’s Academy, Leonardtown, MD "Class of 1963." She was a school bus driver for Mother Catherine Spalding School and the Mennonite Community as well as an STS driver.

She enjoyed fishing, crabbing, hunting, cookouts, going to restaurants (she loved her seafood she could never get enough oysters or crabs to eat), and even though her job was to drive the bus it was more of a pastime than a job, she loved driving the school bus with all of her heart, all of her children from the schools were like second children to her, and the STS drivers were her second family.

You could always count on her for a laugh and a smile, she loved spending time with family, friends, and her dogs Shyra and Gypsy. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 3, 2008 from 2:00-4:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD where prayers will be said at 3:00 PM. Bernard Eugene "Bird" Purcell

Bernard Eugene "Bird" Purcell, 67 of Drayden, MD died January 28, 2008 at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Born April 29, 1940 in Pearson, MD, he was the son of the late George T. and Lillian Marie Dyer Purcell. He is survived by his loving wife Diane M. Purcell whom he married on February 11, 2005 in Calvert County, MD. He is survived by his siblings; George Purcell, Shirley Long and Paul Purcell, all of Drayden, MD, nieces; Patricia Purcell Wince and her husband Donnie of Valley Lee, MD, Gail Purcell Wood and her husband Ron of Hollywood, MD and her nephew Thomas Purcell and his wife Mary of Drayden, MD. He is also survived by his great-nieces Meaghan Wince of Valley Lee, MD and Kayla and Hanna Purcell of Drayden, MD as well as his great-nephews Jay Wince of Valley Lee, MD and Dale Wince of Compton, MD.

He was preceded in death by his sister Hope Carey and his brother Phillip Purcell. A lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County, Bird graduated from St. Michael High School. He was employed as a barge pumper for Exxon Mobil for 23 years, retiring in 1993.

He was a charter member of The Moose Patuxent Lodge and The Waterman’s Association and he also enjoyed gardening, his kitties and watching television. Gail Kathryn Cronkright

Gail Kathryn Cronkright, 68 of Charlotte Hall, MD, went to be with the Lord on January 29, 2008 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Born March 25, 1939 in Cadillac, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Marjorie Archambault.

After living the majority of her life in Lansing, Michigan Ms. Cronkright moved to St. Mary’s County 10 years ago. She was a member of the Waldorf Vineyard Christian Fellowship. She retired in 2006 from the Department of the Navy as a Budget Analyst. Her favorite past times were reading suspense novels, sewing, making wedding dresses for her family, crafting, making jewelry. She was a very loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She is survived by her children; David Cronkright, (Starr), Bonnie Oakes, (Rick), Deborah Renaldi (the late Carl), Michael Cronkright, (Lynn), Mary Glotfelty, (William) and Laura Cheeney, (James), her siblings; Jack Archambault, (Linda) and Barbara Austin, (James) and 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Services were held on Thursday, January 31, 2008 with Pastor Larry Richards officiating. Patricia Ann Stirling

Patricia Ann Stirling, 53 of Great Mills, MD, formerly of Clinton, MD, died on January 28, 2008 at St. Mary’s Hospital. Born December 29, 1954 in Washington, DC to the late George B. and Shirley Jean Sandridge Northern.

Ms. Stirling was a life member of the VFW Post 9376 in Clinton, MD, and a member of the Moose, Columbia DC Chapter 368. She enjoyed shopping and going to lunch with family and friends, she also enjoyed country music. Ms. Stirling was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend.

Laurence William "Bill" Miller
US Army Veteran

Bill was born and raised in North Carolina. He graduated from Claremont High School in North Carolina and Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa.He was stationed in Germany during the German Crisis while he served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. After working a short time for the airlines in South Carolina, Bill moved to Washington, D.C. to pursue a career with the airlines, where he met his future wife. He then went to work for the Federal Government.

He worked for several agencies including the Naval Oceanographic Office and Defense Mapping Agency and retired from the Naval Sea Systems Command in 1994.He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. and Mrs. Laurence W. Miller. He leaves to grieve his wife of 46 years Trinna Lund Miller, sons Laurence and Keith, daughters-in-law Karen and Judy. He also leaves behind four grandchildren Justin, Scott, Mark and Rachel as well as two sisters Janice Romeo (husband David Benfield) and Carolyn Tawney (husband Chuck) and in-laws Ruth and Thomas Rhodes, Evelyn and Henry Kibler, Charlotte and Jerry Reshew.

Bill loved classical music and Great Britain. He traveled overseas fourteen times after retirement and read numerous books on the history of the English and French monarchy.Bill was the president of the Lower Marlboro Town Citizens Association until he became ill and had to resign.

He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Sunderland, Maryland for 33 years, serving as an usher, a chalice bearer, a teller and a vestry member. Norman E. Walker of Lusby, Maryland formally of Waysons Corner, Maryland. Norman Walker was born on October 23, 1921 in Washington, D.C. to the late Mary Catherine and James E. Walker. Norman is survived by his loving wife Ruth "Penny" Walker. Devoted father of Candis Tewell of Lusby, Maryland; Roxanne and Ginger Walker of Silver Spring, Maryland. Beloved grandfather of Dawn Beatty, Brandy Myers and Lindsay Tewell. Great grandfather of Starla and Isaac Myers and Christopher Franklin. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

PFC Norman Walker served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corp with the 1st Air Division. He was stationed in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe with the Air Offensive-Europe. Mr. Walker was a member of Plumbers Union Local #5 since 1955, the American Legion Post 274, Lusby, Maryland and the Disabled American Veterans.

Claude Richard Carpenter

Claude Richard Carpenter, 60 of Lusby passed away at Calvert Memorial Hospital on January 18, 2008. Claude was born in Dansville, NY on March 4, 1947 to Alene Carroll and the late Charles J. Carpenter. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Jean Carpenter; five children, Ricky Carpenter, Jenny Brewer, Penny, Jeanie, and Cindy; mother, Alene Carroll; brother, Tim Carpenter, and nineteen grandchildren.Claude loved to play music, talking on his CB, tinkering with computers, and fishing.

Lawrence Lee "Larry" Miller

Lawrence Lee "Larry" Miller, 85, of Lusby, MD, died on December 20, 2007 at the Solomons Nursing Center in Solomons of natural causes. Mr. Miller is survived by his wife Lucille C. "Lucy" Miller, his daughters Shelley D. Miller of Idaho Falls, ID and Holly C. Sorrelle of Tiberon, CA; his sons Larry L. Carlson of Norfolk, VA and Robert L. "Scoop" Carlson of Driggs, ID; his brothers James "Jack" Miller of Cleveland, OH and Albert Hasselo of Columbus, OH; and his grandchildren Kala L. Jauquet, Ryan L., Nicholas A.L., Sofia J., and Jude A. Carlson. He is preceded in death by his first wife Muriel Blakely Miller; a daughter, Susan L. Miller; and his sister, Julie Hasselo.

He was born on January 9, 1922 in Cleveland, OH to the late Lawrence Lee and Irene Schaffer Miller. Larry attended Ohio State University and The George Washington University eventually receiving a master’s degree in business. Larry joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a Naval Aviator for the next 27 years, retiring in 1971 as a Commander in the Secretary of Defense’s Office at the Pentagon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Solomons on Saturday, December 29 at 11:00 AM. Friends of Larry and Lucy that feel a special need are invited to attend. Family, friends and club members are cordially invited to attend a memorial reception for Larry at Solomons Island Yacht Club on Saturday, December 29 at 2:00 PM. Club members are asked to pass the word to non-club members. Larry will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, February 15, 2008 at 1:00 PM.



Louise Marie Sweeney Stack

Louise Marie Sweeney Stack, 82, of Hollywood, MD formerly of Prince George’s County, died January 23, 2008 at her home. Born August 12, 1925 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late Solomon Andrew and Mary Louise Howard Sweeney. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Cleo William Stack of Hollywood, MD; daughters: Cleone Wible and her husband of Paul of Hollywood, MD and Marilyn Anne Stack-Gill and her husband Rob of Glen Arm, MD; son: Robert Stack and his wife Mary of Greeley, CO. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Kellye Nelson and her husband Steve, Kathleen Davis and her husband Brian, Patrick Gill, Andy Stack and his wife Jen, Suzanne Stahl and her husband Dennis and 8 great grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother: Andrew Sweeney. Laura May Greenwell, 83, of California, MD and formerly of McAndrews, KY died January 19, 2008 at St. Mary’s Nursing Center. Born February 3, 1924 in Lynn, WV she was the daughter of the late James Walter and Mary Angeline Street Abshire. She was the loving wife of the late Ignatius Valley Greenwell whom she married on September 9, 1944 in Elkton, MD and who preceded her in death on August 31, 1992. She is survived by her children; Janet Jenkins and her husband Bill of Cape Coral, FL, Gerry Greenwell and his wife Margo of Gray, TN, Danny Greenwell and his wife Sandy of Hollywood, MD, Sharon Ferris and her late husband Danny of Waldorf, MD and Lisa Driver of Lehigh Acres, FL, siblings; Juanita Hutchison of Huntington, WV and Glendine Stewart of Hawthorne, FL, as well as 6 grandchildren; Denny MacRae, Dawn (MacRae) Lopes, Gerry Greenwell Jr., Ryan Greenwell, Margo Ann Greenwell and Kaitlyn Greenwell and 4 great-grandchildren; Kristin, Jamie, Jesse and Mason.

Laura moved to St. Mary’s County in 1947 from McAndrews, KY and spent her career as a homemaker for 63 years with a PhD in motherhood. She enjoyed listening to country music, playing bingo, growing flowers, cooking for her family and watching The Price is Right and soaps.

Robert James Kerr, MSgt. U.S.A.F. (Ret.), 72, of Leonardtown, MD died January 19, 2008 at his residence.
Born July 12, 1935 in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Walter F. Kerr and Rita M. Kenny Kerr. Mr. Kerr served his country in the United States Air Force. He was a Past President of the Boys and Girls Club in Clinton, MD and a member of the American Legion Post in Clinton. He had worked with family at the Morris Point Restaurant in Abell, MD.

He is survived by his wife, Tanya M. Kerr of Leonardtown, MD, three sons, Walter Frederick Kerr of Bethesda, MD, David Anthony Kerr of San Antonio, TX, John Patrick Kerr of Raleigh, NC, nine grandchildren and two sisters, Irene Kerr of Galveston, TX and Kathleen Kenny of Scottsdale, AZ.
Interment will be on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Lula Aurilee Maddox
Lula Aurilee Maddox, 86 of California, MD died on January 15, 2008 at Washington Hospital Center.

Born April 28, 1921 in Indian Head, MD, she was the daughter of the late Ellis and Elise Willett. Mrs. Maddox was a graduate of LaPlata High School. She went to work at Patuxent River Naval Air Base in 1945 and retired in 1979. Mrs. Maddox was a member of the St. Mary’s County Arts Guild, St. Mary’s County Quilting Group, Order of the Eastern Star Julia Hall Chapter #107, the Hollywood Bible Study Group, Meals on Wheels, NARF and past president of the Christian Women’s Society.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Maddox was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, the late Russell A. Maddox, her brother Guy Willett and sister Evelyn Abell.

She is survived by her daughter’s; Elaine Fry of California, MD and Karen Boone-Roberts of Great Mills, MD one sister; Alberta Murphy of Auburn, Maine, three grandchildren Tim Fry, Shawn Fry and Shannon Boone and one great grandchild Leigha Fry.

The family will receive friends for a Life Celebration on Sunday, January 20, 2008 from 2pm to 6pm in the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A. Charlotte Hall, MD with prayers at 5pm. Services will be held on Monday, January 21, 2008 at 11am in Hollywood United Methodist Church with Reverend Sheldon Reese officiating.

Mildred Elizabeth Wince
Mildred Elizabeth Wince, 81, of Piney Point, MD died January 14, 2008 at St. Mary’s Nursing Center. Born June 13, 1926 in Piney Point, MD she was the daughter of the late Frank Joseph and Mary Katherine Yingst Eberle. She was the loving wife of Warren Louis Wince whom she married on November 6, 1942 in Leonardtown, MD.

She is survived by her children; Judith Nelson and her husband John of Town Creek, MD, Louis Wince and his wife Linda of Dumfries, VA, Sheila Morris and her husband George of Land O’ Lakes, FL and Donald Wince and his wife Patricia of Valley Lee, MD as well as 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Donna Estep and her husband Tom of Grove City, OH and Mary K. Yingst of Galloway, OH.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Francis and William Jefferson Eberle.

A lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County, Mildred was a graduate of Great Mills High School.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, January 18, 2008 in St. George Catholic Church, Valley Lee, MD with Fr. Joseph Sileo officiating. Pallbearers were John Robbins, Jeffrey Schroeder, Brandon Wince, James Sellers, Dale Wince and Jay Wince.

Mary Patricia "Pat" Waters Cammack

Mary Patricia "Pat" Waters Cammack, 81, of Leonardtown, MD and formerly of Prince Frederick, MD died January 14, 2008 at her home "Hampton" in Leonardtown MD. Born March 26, 1926 in St. Augustine, FL she was the oldest daughter of the late Joseph Borrows and Rosalind Torreyson Bailey Waters, Jr. The family lived in University Park (Prince George’s County), MD. She graduated from Hyattsville High School and graduated from Dunbarton College of Holy Cross "Class of 1947" with a B.A. in French. She also attended Washington School for Secretaries and worked at the Department of State, I.A.D. Division, for ten years. In 1958 she started to work for her father in Prince Frederick at his real estate office, J.B. Waters and Associates. Pat married Robert Edmund Cammack of Washington, D.C. at the historic St. Francis Xavier Church in Newtowne Neck, MD in 1963. She resided for the rest of her life in St. Mary’s County at "Hampton", Medley’s Neck, MD. She is survived by her husband, five children, thirteen grandchildren, sister Rosalind Jeanne Waters Zseleczky of Temple Hills, MD and brother Joseph Borrows Waters III of Port Republic, MD.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 10:00 AM in Our Lady’s Catholic Church, Medley’s Neck, MD with Fr. Thomas LaHood officiating and Deacon Thomas Spalding co-officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be William D. Cammack, Thomas J. Cammack, William H. Marley, Jr., Matthew B. Girod, Iric J. Krissoff and James P. Rice.

James Harold "Sambo" Herbert, Sr., 72, of Lexington Park, MD and formerly of Maddox, MD died January 13, 2008 at St. Mary’s Nursing Center. Born January 27, 1935 in Maddox, MD he was the son of the late Nick and Mary Agnes Parker. He was the loving husband of the late Hilda Elizabeth Herbert whom he married on December 7, 1957 in Sacred Heart Church and who preceded him in death of March 30, 1987.

He is survived by his children; James H. Herbert (Jimmy) of Maddox, MD, Rebecca T. Herbert (Sis), Mary E. Herbert (Mae), Julia B. Herbert, Harry W. Herbert (Sonny) and Barbara Y. Courtney (Barbie), all of Lexington Park, MD as well as 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Dennis A. Herbert (Butch).

A lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County, James was educated by the St. Mary’s County Public School system. He was employed for Dean Construction Company for 25 years and was a driver for Walter Wise Trucking for twenty years, retiring in 1997.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 from 5:00-8:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Chapel, Leonardtown, MD where prayers will be held at 7:00 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, January 17, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bushwood, MD with Fr. Francis Early officiating. Pallbearers were Thomas Courtney, John Maddox, Jr., James Butler, Sr., William Butler, John F. Jacobs and William Scriber. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Hill, John Hill, Francis Hill, James Bonds, Alphonso Bowman and James Hill (Iggie).

Mark Lee O’Connor

Mark Lee O’Connor, 40, a resident of Hollywood, MD for 34 years, died January 12, 2008 at his home.

He was born September 11, 1967 in Millington, TN to Nellie O’Connor Horton of Great Mills, MD and Frank R. O’Connor of Lake St. Louis, MO. He graduated from Leonardtown High School in 1985. He was the only male cheerleader Leonardtown High School ever had. He was a comedian with a broad range of sound effects including a train whistle, crickets, elephants, cat and dog fight. He was a swimmer for the Silver Dolphins and he made it to the Junior Olympics. He was best known as "Mark the Man of Star Karaoke and DJ" entertaining many family and friends, young and old, in Maryland and Virginia. He loved working as a DJ with Star Karaoke and had many friends who followed his work. Mark was an outgoing, friendly person who would always make people laugh. His laughter and smile will be truly missed.

Mark is survived by a daughter, Ginny Rae O’Connor of Hollywood, MD, a son, Mark Lee O’Connor II of Summer Set, KY, his mother, Nellie O’Connor Horton and Ray, his father, Frank O’Connor and Dianne, one brother, Shawn O’Connor and Laura of Sunderland, MD and their 3 children and numerous cousins and family.

Relatives and friends are invited to Mark’s Life Celebration at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. in Leonardtown, MD on Saturday, January 19, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. in the Brinsfield Life Celebration Chapel. Monsignor Karl Chimiak will conduct the service. Inurnment will be private.

Francis Albert "Frank" Davis

Francis Albert "Frank" Davis, 78, of Leonardtown, Md. lost his fight after a courageous battle with cancer on January 11, 2008 at St. Mary’s Nursing Center. Frank as he was always known, was born in Chaptico, MD on September 12, 1929, son of the late Henry Albert & Ella Simpson Davis. He attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Morganza for eight years and St. Mary’s Academy for four years, graduating in the class of 1947. In 1952, Frank was drafted in U.S. Army, spending most of his enlistment on the front lines in Korea. After his discharge from the Army in 1953, Frank was employed by the C & P Phone Company now (Verizon) and retired in 1985 after 32 years of service. In 1954, Frank married the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Bowling (Betty). They lived in Leonardtown for more than 50 years. After his retirement from C&P, Frank worked part time as a salesman for Raley’s Home Furnishings. Frank was a volunteer with various organizations and spent many hours as a tour guide at the "Old Jail" in Leonardtown for the historical society, one of his favorite pastimes. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church where he devoted hours of his time each week to the needs of the parish. His memberships included the Knights of Columbus and The Arc of Southern Maryland. As an avid bowler, Frank belonged to various bowling leagues and bowled up to the time of his illness.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Patricia Lynn Davis, his brother Lewis Henry Davis and his parents Henry Albert and Ella Simpson Davis. Frank is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ann (Betty), his children Francis Michael Davis and his wife Deborah of Frederick, MD, Richard Albert Davis and his wife Monika and Nancy Gail Thompson and her husband Michael, all of Mechanicsville, MD. Five grandchildren, Shannon, Erin and Taylor Davis and Jessica and Christopher Thompson as well as his step-grandchildren Patti Hickey and her husband Jason and David Walker and his wife Angel and two step-great-grandchildren Bailey and Jacob.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic Church in Leonardtown, MD on Tuesday, January 15th with the Rev. Rory T. Conley officiating. Interment followed at the St. Aloysius Cemetery in Leonardtown. Pallbearers were Bill Bartlett, Calvin "Bucky" Bowling, Charles "Chip" Bowling, Jr., Charles "Peanut" Bowling, Francis B. Gough and Richard "Dickie" Pitcher. Honorary pallbearers were the grandchildren of Mr. Davis.
