Special Delivery to Cop's Home Ends With

Deliverymen Assaulting Officer, Both Shot

Prince George’s County, Maryland…Police say that the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigative Response Team is continuing their investigation of a Departmental shooting involving an off-duty county police officer. On January 24, 2007, at approximately 7:45 p.m., Prince George’s County police officers responded to the home of an officer who was calling to report a shooting in the 1500 block of Shellford Lane. The shooting involved the officer, who is a 16-year veteran of the department, and is assigned to the Office of the Chief. Circumstances of the case are still being investigated, but apparently started with the delivery of furniture to the officer’s home. At some point during the delivery, the officer got into an altercation with one of the delivery men, who then began to physically assault him. The second delivery man also began to assault the officer. A violent struggle ensued, and the officer, fearing for his life, discharged his issued service weapon to stop the assault. Both of the delivery men were struck in the upper body and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. They are currently listed in critical but stable condition. The officer has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with Departmental policies and procedures.  The investigation is continuing.
