Prince
George’s
County
Police
Department
has
identified
the officers
involved in
the
departmental
shooting
that
occurred on
the
Baltimore
Washington
Parkway at
Route 450 as
Corporal
Alfred L.
Michael, an
18-year
veteran, and
Corporal
Lennie S.
Sage a
17-year
veteran,
both
assigned to
the Patrol
Services
Bureau,
Special
Operations
Division.
On
January 3,
2007, at
approximately
7:30 p.m.,
Prince
George’s
County
police
officers
observed a
vehicle with
stolen tags
in the
parking lot
of a
shopping
center in
the 6600
block of
Riverdale
Road. As
the officers
approached
the vehicle
on foot, the
driver drove
over a curb,
onto a
sidewalk and
fled. The
driver
attempted to
exit the
parking lot
when an
officer
again
approached
his car.
The suspect
put the car
in reverse
and
accelerated
towards the
officer,
nearly
striking
him.
Officers
pursued the
fleeing
vehicle to
the
southbound
ramp of the
Baltimore
Washington
Parkway at
Route 450
where the
driver lost
control of
his car. At
that point,
officers
left their
cruisers to
apprehend
the
suspects.
The driver
started to
ram the
police cars
that were in
the front
and back of
the vehicle.
Two officers
discharged
their
service
firearms
striking the
driver and a
passenger.
One
of the
police
officers,
injured
during the
ramming of
his police
vehicle, was
transported
to a nearby
hospital
where he was
treated and
released.
The driver,
43 year old
Mark Antonio
Washington
of the 400
block of Ord
Street, N.E.
in
Washington,
D.C. was
pronounced
dead on the
scene.
The
passenger,
another 43
year old
male, was
transported
to a nearby
hospital
where he was
treated for
a gunshot
wound to his
arm.
Both
officers
have been
placed on
administrative
leave in
accordance
with
Departmental
policies and
procedures.
The
investigation
is
continuing.
