Officers Involved in Calvert Road Shooting Identified
 

 

Prince George’s County, Maryland… The Prince George’s County Police Department has identified the officers involved in the departmental shooting that occurred April 19, 2008 as Police Officer First Class Earnest Hanley Jr, a 5 year veteran, Police Officer Jason Smith, a 2 year veteran, and Police Officer Iris Borrero, a 1 1/2 year veteran, all of whom are assigned to Patrol Services.  The officers have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.  The preliminary details of the shooting are as follows:

On April 19, 2008, at approximately 9:57 a.m., officers responded to the 2300 block of Calvert Street for a report of a family dispute.  Upon arrival, officers were confronted by 38 year-old Hugo Enrique Lopez of the 2300 block of Calvert Street, who was armed with a knife and a handgun and refused to put down the weapons in his possession.  After several commands for the suspect to comply, officers discharged their issued firearms, striking the suspect several times.  The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene.  A knife and a handgun were recovered on the scene.
