PARK HALL (Feb. 9, 2010) – A fire in the attic of an old manor house at what was known for decades as the Park Hall airport and hog farm, wrecked the structure while firefighters attempted to put it out during the early morning hours.
The fire, which was discovered by a motorist on Rt. 5, at 2:44 a.m. today, was first responded to by Bay District Volunteer Fire Department and soon units from Ridge, Valley Lee, Solomon’s, Leonardtown, Seventh District and Mechanicsville.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, says Deputy Fire Marshal C. Moreland.
The fire was being fought by 44 firefighters when the roof began to cave in and the structure was evacuated for the safety of the volunteers.
Due to extreme water, fire and smoke damage, the estimated loss was set at $115,000.
The old farmhouse, which was owned by Maurice Dixon when the airport and hog farm was in operation and for the last 25 years by Paul and Sherry Lloyd. Paul is recently deceased and Sherry was staying elsewhere at the time of the fire.
