HOLLYWOOD (Oct.
1, 2007) On Saturday, Sept. 29
at approximately 7:30 pm Sean
Foley Somerville, 26, of
Hollywood, Maryland was racing
at least one other crotch rocket
motorcyclist at a high rate of
speed, what one witness said was
over 100 mph when he lost
control near area of the
Hollywood Rescue Squad and
Hollywood firehouse at
Woodpecker Lane, wrecked and hit
an embankment and was pronounced
dead at the scene.
A
witness to the wreck told ST.
MARY'S TODAY: "we were on Three
Notch Rd in Hollywood when two
guys on "crotch rockets" came
flying passed us (we were
doing 60, we estimate they were
doing anywhere between
100mph and 120mph.) They were
both probably an 1/8 mile in
front of us when we heard a pop
then saw one of the tail lights
start wiggling. Then we saw the
bike crash. We stopped, called
911 and waited for the rescue
squad to arrive. Other people
had already stopped and were
looking for the bike rider. When
the police arrived I gave
our statement. We were told the
bike rider had a pulse.
The pop we heard was probably
either the tire blowing
out or the engine blowing up,
based on the way the bike
started wobbling, more than
likely it was the tire."
Sgt. Steve
Hall, spokesman for the St.
Mary's Sheriff's Department
reports that the cause was
driver error and speed but it
does not appear booze was a
factor.
Speeding crotch rocket bikers
routinely run from police at
speeds of over 100 mph and elude
the cops completely, passing
traffic on shoulders and double
yellow lines. Anyone with
information about this drag race
death can contact the Sheriff's
Department.
Invariably a roadside memorial
of wreaths, flowers, photos and
teddy bears will now be placed
near the scene. A sign saying
'obey the speed limit' should be
added to the memorial for anyone
who truly wants to console the
Somerville family and save other
lives.
