ST. MARY’S
TODAY
ANNAPOLIS ---
Maryland State Senate
President Thomas V. “Mike”
Miller Jr. (D. Calvert, P.
G.) said that years of hard
work finally culminated in
the placement of the issue
of slot machines on the
ballot this fall and that
the placement of illegal
slot machines in St. Mary’s
County is wrong and he told
ST. MARY’S TODAY that the
Sheriff should immediately
remove them.
Sheriff Tim
Cameron said that he had
talked to Sen. Miller on
Wednesday, as well as to
Senator Roy Dyson (D. St.
Mary’s, Calvert, Charles)
and that his staff is
working hard to quickly
arrive at an action plan
based on the law.
“They are
illegal and the States
Attorney and the Sheriff
should act immediately to
remove them from the
county,” Sen. Miller told
ST. MARY’S TODAY.
Miller
explained that Calvert and
Anne Arundel sought special
exemptions from the state
law to provide for instant
bingo machines in those
counties and that gambling
interests tried the same
tactic in Prince George’s
County where it was blocked
by States Attorney Glen
Ivey.
“They were
outlawed in P. G. County,”
said Sen. Miller.
“I doubt that
Senator Dyson will allow
them in St. Mary’s County,”
said Sen. Miller. “It’s a
fraud upon the public and
for the charities where it
is unclear where the money
is going and to have the
slot machines come in the
back door.”
“I fought to
have the issue of slot
machines come forward for 5
years and if you favor legal
slot machines you can vote
for them this fall on the
ballot at the referendum,
but we must follow the law,”
said Sen. Miller. “To have
them come in willy-nilly in
violation of the law in St.
Mary’s County is a travesty
of justice.”
Sen. Dyson said that he
considers the slot machines
to be illegal, that it is
unclear where the money is
going, and that they are
taking money away from
legitimate charities.
Dyson said he urged the
Sheriff to act to remove the
slot machines.
"I suspect that this may
damage the argument to allow
slot machines," said Dyson.
Dyson pointed to a local
charity which operates a
pull tab machine in a local
bar and uses the money for
helping those with
emergencies to have
immediate relief, where
their houses burned down or
a sudden tragedy and since
the bar added in slot
machines, virtually nothing
is made for the charity with
the pull tabs.
