Stop in both directions on multi-lane roads

on red flashing school bus lights

St. Mary's Sheriff Tim Cameron and St. Mary's Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Martirano joined together on Thursday in a public safety education effort to alert drivers that they must stop in both directions when traveling on multi-lane highways, where there is not a median strip.  Traffic on divided highways only have to stop when approaching a school bus from the rear.   Bus driver Diane Morgan stopped her bus on Great Mills Road near the new Charter School as a demonstration of the type of highway where traffic must halt when the bus activates its red lights.  Sheriff Cameron, in photo at right, watched over the safety demonstration scene at one end while Deputy Andrew Holton stopped traffic in the other direction.

Dr. Martirano, left, is accompanied by Schools Chief Operating Officer Brad Clements and Transportation Director Jeff Thompson.  Thompson pointed out the features on the bus which include a camera system which will operate automatically for the safety of the students and the drivers, and operate even in the dark, on Morgan's new bus, #232.  The is equipped with handicapped access loading doors and carrying platforms along with special car seats built into some seats. Thompson noted that the school system owns about 20 such vehicles while contractors supply the great majority of buses used to transport the county's 14,000 students. ST.
