Teen on Dirt Bike Killed When He Slammed into Tree
PRINCE FREDERICK (March 29, 2010) --- Calvert Sheriff Mike Evans reports that on March 28, 2010 at approximately 6:15 p.m. members of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team (CRT), responded to the end of Mason Road in Prince Frederick for a report of a serious motor vehicle crash involving a motorcycle.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Quamaine Shavazz Harris, 16, of Lexington Park, was operating a blue 2000 Yamaha YZ80 off-road type of motorcycle (a recreational vehicle). The operator was pleasure riding up and down the gravel portion of Mason Road extension. Per witness accounts the rider had been riding for approximately one hour prior to the crash. During the crash sequence the operator started in the southerly direction on the gravel extension of Mason Road and came to a slight hillcrest after which the roadway curved to the left. As the motorcycle crested the hill the operator lost control and entered a skid. The motorcycle left the gravel roadway and struck a tree approximately two and half feet from the road edge. The operator was ejected from the vehicle and struck the same tree. Both the operator and the motorcycle came to rest near the tree, with the motorcycle on top of the operator. The operator was not wearing any personal protective equipment required for operating a motorcycle in the State of Maryland.
The operator of the 2000 Yamaha YZ80 sustained mortal injuries and was pronounced dead at Calvert Memorial Hospital by the Emergency Room staff. The cause of death is pending the autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.
