Tiki Bar Nightcap Fatal Wreck Update

Biker was blitzed

SOLOMON'S ISLAND --- The couple who were killed when the motorcycle they were riding crashed off the side of Rousby Hall Road two hours after the Tiki Bar closed on the opening day of the season were both intoxicated, according to toxicology reports from the Maryland State Medical Examiner.
The operator of
the 2008 Suzuki motorcycle was Eugene Kay Jr., 37, of Lusby and his passenger was Amanda Lorenzo, 28, of Ashburn, Va.  The bike was headed northbound on April 19th at about 1 am on Rousby Hall Road when it wrecked, report police. Lorenzo was a teacher in Loudon County.
According to police, Kay's blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit at .19 while Lorenzo was over the legal limit at .08.
Even though Lorenzo's intoxication was not illegal, accepting a ride with a severely intoxicated driver shows the danger of impairing judgment with big rum drinks at the Tiki Bar or any other establishment and not having a designated driver, who is sober.
Both Kay and Lorenzo had stamps from the Tiki Bar on their hands when they were found dead on the side of the road.

SOLOMON'S ISLAND (April 20, 2008) --- Police report that a man from Lusby, in the military was killed when the motorcycle he was driving on Rousby Hall Road at about 12:49 am on Saturday, left the roadway and went down in a ditch.  The woman on his bike was propelled head first into a tree, she was from Virginia.  The Tiki Bar closed at 11 pm and between the time the Tiki Bar closed and the time the couple managed to end their own lives was more than two hours.
According to Sgt. Bowen of the Calvert Sheriff's Department, the 2008 Suzuki motorcycle was operated by Eugene Kay Jr., 37, of Lusby and his passenger was Amanda Lorenzo,, 28, of Ashburn, Va.  The bike was headed northbound on Rousby Hall Road when it wrecked, report police.
What had been a peaceful day of boozing at the Tiki Bar, where the young and the restless arrive to become seen and herded by dozens of police officers as they pour down huge drinks, went from being docile to tragic.
The crowd numbered more than 8,000 during the day and very few arrests took place, reports Calvert Sheriff Mike Evans.  As the evening wore on a couple of disorderly arrests took place and a few barflies were carted out in ambulances for alcohol poisoning, some of them unconscious.  After the Tiki Bar closed at 11 pm, police began to sweep the crowd back down the main street of town with arrests for disorderly conduct taking place at Solomon's Pier and Catamarans, report police.
At about 7 pm Friday, a motorcyclist left  Rt. 4 at Dowell Road, preferring a tour through dense woods to the open highway.  He dragged himself out of the trees and later police conducted a search party  for his wrecked bike.  The man was taken to a hospital.  He was identified as Nelson Lorenzo Butler.
Prior to the double fatal, the annual opening of the beach bar on the island was well handled by Sheriff Evans, who made sure the road on the island stayed open and refused to shut down the roadway in front of the bar as had taken place in prior years.
While boozers load up on big drinks at the Tiki Bar and other island watering holes, there were rewards for designated drivers and plenty of officers out on patrol to lock up the ones who were intoxicated, and refused to let others drive and thereby endangered the lives of others.
The two people who died on Rousby Hall Road have only themselves to blame, but the Tiki Bar stamps on their cold dead hands speak for themselves.
--- Drive drunk, you die.

Calvert Sheriff Mike Evans issued this report on April 21: "This year’s annual Tiki Bar opening brought approximately 13,000 people to the island on Friday, April 18 and about 9,000 on Saturday.  Between 7:00 p.m. and 11:20 p.m. on Friday, Sheriff Office deputies arrested three subjects for disorderly and assault at three different locations; Solomon's Island Road near Lore Road, at Bunky’s Charter Boats and in the Lighthouse Restaurant parking lot.
On Saturday, Sheriff Deputies and Maryland State Police Barrack “U” Troopers arrested 4 subjects, one of those at the Tiki Bar, and charged them with disorderly, resisting arrest and destruction of property at Catamarans, Grill Sgt. and the Tiki Bar.  Two of those arrests occurred between midnight and one a.m., one at 4:00 p.m. and one at 10:00 p.m.

In the early morning hours on Sunday, April 20, one person was arrested for disorderly and failure to obey a lawful order by a MSP trooper at the Tiki Bar."

Thick Tongue, Stupor Makes Stupid, Mouth Was Passport to Jail
SOLOMON’S ISLAND --- Calvert deputies and Maryland State Police had a piece of cake at the Tiki Bar annual booze fest with about 13,000 people enjoying themselves, but on Saturday April 19 at 4:00 p.m. DFC James Bell was on foot patrol on Solomon’s Island when he noticed a disturbance between the Grill Sergeant and the Tiki Bar restaurants.  Bouncers from the Tiki Bar were physically escorting an apparently inebriated customer from the premises.  The customer continued to cause a disturbance by yelling obscenities.  He was asked to refrain from using profanities but did not do so.  Clint R. Sutton, 34 of Laurel, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

Man Mugged by Gang at Tiki Bar Opening Day
SOLOMON’S ISLAND Dep. Andrew Clas responded to the front gate of the Navy Recreation Center in Solomon’s on April 19 at 12:30 a.m. for a reported assault.  The victim, a 24-year-old male from Conway, NC, advised that he had been in the parking lot of the Solomon’s Fastop when three unknown suspects approached him and started an altercation.  One of the suspects punched the victim in the eye then took off running.  He was transported via ambulance to CMH for his injuries.  No suspects could be located.

Mouthy Melissa Refused to Stop Cursing
SOLOMON’S ISLAND --- Calvert Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Melissa K. Tuzzo, 21 of Lusby, on April 18 at 6:30 p.m. on Solomon’s Island Road near Lore Road in Solomon’s when she continually cursed at a friend in a public area after being told not to.  She was charged with disorderly conduct.

Young Finds Way to Clink in Calvert
SOLOMON’S ISLAND --- Calvert An employee of Catamarans Restaurant was escorting a subject from the establishment when the subject turned and pushed him on April 19 at 12:05 a.m. DFC Michael Tomlinson observed the altercation and approached the subject, later identified as George T. Young, 22 of Callaway, and gave several verbal commands, which Young ignored.  Young was arrested by DFC Tomlinson and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Sheriff and Beer Company Award Winner in Designated Driver Contest;

308 Boozers Signed Up and Promised to Use Brains

Sheriff Mike Evans selected the lucky winner of a trip for four to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg on Monday, April 21 at 10:00 in the morning in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office.  Joining the Sheriff was Richard Hall and Dave Parker, Regional Sales Manager, both of Bob Hall LLC, which offered the Busch Gardens trip and fifty dollars for fuel costs.

The winning card, belonging to Susan Scaduto of Lusby, was taken from the pledge cards entered by citizens who signed up to be Designated Drivers at this year’s annual opening of the Tiki Bar.  Bob Hall LLC, sponsoring the drive to encourage designated driving, also supplied sling bags, coolers, MP3 speakers and other items for the designated drivers to win throughout the weekend.  Anheuser Busch’s “Who’s Your Bud? Choose a Designated Driver” program promotes the concept.  The Tiki Bar and Catamarans restaurant participated this past weekend by providing free water and Tiki Bar t-shirts to designated drivers.  There were 308 designated drivers signed up to transport an additional 855 passengers safely home after enjoying the festivities.
“We firmly believe in the designated driver program, and thank the attendees at the Tiki Bar and Catamarans establishments last weekend that participated,  stated Sheriff Mike Evans. “Bob Hall, Inc., the Anheuser Busch distributor for Calvert County, has really stepped up in increasing the local establishments’ awareness of the need for a designated driver program, especially during large events such as the Tiki Bar opening.”

 READER FEEDBACK:
I am Eugene's ( Junior ) oldest sister, and I am proud to say that Eugene was an exceptional man that served his country proud. His first permanent assignment was with the 30th Airlift Squadron, Yokota Air base, Japan. He retrained in communications and computer systems and was assigned to the 721st Communications Squadon at Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Base. His next assignment took him to Robins Air Force Base, GA. were he was the Assistant Noncommisioned Officer in Charge of Network Management with the 78th Communications Sqadron. He was deployed as a Telecommunications Computer Systems Controller to Prince Sultans Air Force Base, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in support of Operations SOUTHERN WATCH and ENDURING FREEDOM. Sergeant Kay went back for a second tour as a Technical Control, Circuit Action Technician to Al Udeid Air Base, Quatar in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQUI FREEDOM. He then was promoted to join the Air Force Office of SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS as a Network Enterprise Controller of the Network Management Branch within the Field Support Squadron. He was awarded many Military Awards and Decorations while he served his country. Eugene wrote " I would like to think that I can change the people I meet. Let them know that there are good people out there. Honest, hard working people that do the right thing."
Like most people, he liked to unwind from time to time, and he met a lovely young woman who was a mother af two young daughters, and a teacher to a classroom of third graders. They decided to enjoy themselves by going out for the weekend. The motorcycle crash was VERY TRAGIC for all involved. These were two outstanding American Citizens, you should have more respect for their souls by writing an unbiased article. Stick to the facts and do yourself a favor by omitting the trash talk if you are a respectable newspaper. Obviously you are not.

(Editor's Note: While you have our condolences, you must accept the facts that had your brother and his friend simply made the right decision to get a room, call a cab or just sit out on a park bench until they sobered up, they would be alive, their families would not be propelled into grief and our roads would have been a lot safer. But they didn't and they added to a deathly toll of alcohol-related fatalities that are on the increase once again in Maryland. We would rather had your brother in our DWI arrest column than yet another booze caused fatal wreck story. The people he acted to protect during his proud service were in danger because he wanted to party hardy and as is often the case with a drunk driver, he not only took his own life but that of another. No one causes any disrespect for the souls of those passed by telling the story of their irresponsible actions and to roar down our roads drunk and speeding is perhaps the trashiest action one can take.  Get a grip.)

READER FEEDBACK:

I was horrified to read your incredibly cold hearted article about the couple who passed away on Saturday after their motorcycle hit a tree.  Did you ever think that a grieving family member or friend might read your article in the wake of their incredible sadness?  Your words are harsh and cruel and irresponsible.  Did you know that the woman, Amanda Lorenzo, has two young daughters whose father died in Iraq?  That she was a third grade teacher who has left an entire school in sadness and shock?  Do you personally have knowledge that these two people were under the influence of alcohol?  You have a responsibility to report accurate and unbiased information.  Let these poor people rest in peace.
Pegbillg

(Editor's Note: Are you just an idiot?  This couple didn't "pass away" as if this was some sort of natural cause of death, they died because they had been to the Tiki Bar, with the bar's stamp still on their hands. Their motorcycle ran off the road and crashed into a tree. They could have killed someone else had they hit another vehicle instead of a tree.  The operator of the motorcycle was responsible for his driving, the woman was responsible for boarding his bike for the last ride of her life. Where was her responsibility to her children, who had already lost one parent? Is there absolutely no logic on your part? Hundreds of people signed up to be designated drivers while hundreds of others pledged to let others drive them for this boozefest at Solomon's. The facts are clear, the couple were at the Tiki Bar and not long after leaving there, they died in a wreck like dozens of others leaving the regions bars have done for decades. Unfortunately this booze-filled conduct has become part of the fabric of the local society and the annual Redneck Mardi Gras at Solomon's is aided in every way by the Calvert County Commissioners, who provide parking, shuttle buses and police services.  The message is clear: you drink, you drive, you die.)

READER FEEDBACK:

I recently read your article about the "Tiki bar motorcycle crash" and was incredibly offended. although I did not know those involved personally, my mother worked alongside Amanda Lorenzo at their workplace. I'm extremely offended and only hope that this poor excuse of an article does not speak for your entire staff. not only did you disrespect those involved in the accident as well as their family and loved ones, you wrote about them as if they were criminals. I highly doubt you have enough information to accuse them of "taking their own lives" or deserving their fate, considering how the police wouldn't release such information to a newspaper no one reads. excuse me if I'm causing offense to you or if this article was published on accident, but i thought it was only fair to state that whoever released this should reconsider their career as a "journalist" and take some "compassion 101" classes...or at least try learning the whole story before they print it.
thanks for your time,
Sara Page

(Editor's Note: Grow up Sara, we save our compassion for those in this community who do not speed down the highway on motorcycles and crash into trees and drive drunk.  For those who make this choice, they do deserve what they get. Why is it that you do not get it: thousands of people went to this event and made it home by making good choices. Some did drive drunk and were arrested, others weren't caught and many others were responsible and arranged for designated drivers.)

READER FEEDBACK:
I was extremely saddened to see the article written by your paper on the accident that occurred on April 20th which resulted in the loss of two lives.   While I understand the feelings of the residents and how invasive these visitors must be, I also understand the loss that I am feeling of a very dear, young, mother of two - Amanda.    The article disrespectfully states, "The two people who died have only themselves to blame but the Tiki Bar stamps on their cold dead hands speak for themselves."
I find it inexcusable that your paper would print such a hateful, crass summary of such a tragic event.   While I did not know the man involved, I did know Amanda well.   She was a loving young mother two who did not deserve to be dishonored in this way by your paper.  Amanda was an excellent teacher and who worked extremely hard.
While I am shocked and disappointed that she made the decision to drive after being out, I am mortified by your reporting and the hateful comments that were made within the article.

(Editors Note: Your grief for your co-worker is understandable and her decision to go out on the town instead of caring for her children is the kind of decision that simply is unexplainable, but the end result is that her children are now orphans.  There was clearly no "hateful" summary in our reporting, you just don't like the cold hard facts presented in a way that makes it clear that living in a dangerous manner has deadly results. For our part, we have printed the names of more than 55,000 DWI arrests in this area in an effort to convince people to make better decisions about what to after they have been drinking. Don't be an idiot, reporting on yet another late night double fatal does not "dishonor" this teacher, but it may make another young teacher use her brain for something other than placing a motorcycle helmet after leaving a bar...like saying...why don't we get a ride.... we have had many teachers in the DWI Hit Parade over the years and a few school principals too. Please make the right decision yourself and don't drink and drive.)

READER FEEDBACK:

Dear St. Mary's Today,
I went online today after passing a newspaper stand yesterday that had the front page article on the Tiki Bar double death. I was shocked myself to hear that deaths took place at the Tiki Bar opening this year, not the usual bar brawls and things of that nature.
Anyway, I would like to say that your article was very well written and serves to remind people of the dangers of drinking and driving. One would think that after going through Driver's Education, people would have half the decency to remember the lessons they have learned. Unfortunately, it is their decision and results such as the two deaths occurred. Let the deluded say what they want to say about your article being too harsh. If anything, their comments and astounding ignorance only serve to amuse me and get me a good laugh for the day.
Wonderful article. On a different note, am I the only one disturbed that the one place St. Mary's gets hyped up for is in another county?
Matt
(Editor's Note: No one wants anyone to die and visitors to the area, whether in Calvert or St. Mary's should be able to share the beauty of Solomon's and Southern Maryland without making their visit their last day on earth.  Unfortunately, officials have not done their jobs in the past and cracked down when some of those in attendance have committed crimes, urinated in yards, defecated on lawns, destroyed property and otherwise committed mayhem at the annual Redneck Mardi Gras, all in the name of having fun. But the boozedroids think that all others must get out of their way so they can 'rock' with DC 101 at the Tiki Bar opening. Its a mindset that is unbelievable and unacceptable.)

READER FEEDBACK:

Dear Editor,
Your statements about the couple’s drunkenness in your responses, or allusions to their drunkenness in the article itself are based solely on speculation and circumstantial evidence.  There was no mention of driving under the influence playing a role in this accident in the police report that you reference.  You mentioned in your article that hundreds of individuals pledged to be designated drivers.  How do you know that the driver of the motorcycle was not the designated driver for his passenger, and as the report stated, “failed to negotiate a turn.”  I am not making these statements out of ignorance, but simply out of our American value to protect the innocent, until proven guilty.  I am quite sure that as more information becomes available through the police investigation, much of this will be cleared up, but until that happens, you should exhibit some restraint in your wording and not convict this couple of irresponsibility without knowing all the facts.  If in fact, evidence reveals that these individuals were driving under the influence, I hope you and your community can find the courage to forgive them, be thankful that others were not killed or injured as a result of their choices and we can all consider this to be a very hard and painful lesson learned, but please don’t judge their character without all the facts.  It sounds as though your biggest concern is with the nature of the Tiki Bar opening, the crowd it draws, and the way it is managed (or not) by officials.  I fully appreciate your disgust with some of the antics of the weekend that you describe, but again, you must separate your (and your community’s) opinions about the event and the stated facts of this incident.
Heather Cox
Sterling, VA
(Editor's Note: Heather, it would be nice to be able to afford the luxury of your dispassionate view however our concern is our readers, their families and friends who must use our roads as they come and go to work, even at all hours as our nurses and other staff of local hospitals and others work at night and it is not fair for them to face speeding kids drag racing and ending the lives of four people as took place on this same road just a mile away not long ago or at night or wild operators of motorcycles at 1 am.
Whether speed is the only at-fault factor or if booze is also the cause of the crash of the couple last week will be revealed in time, but the facts are clear, the operator of the motorcycle had been at the bar at which the specialty drink is a huge rum concoction famous for being so powerful that most people cannot drink more than two.
The other fact is that the motorcycle was operated at a speed greater than reasonable and driver error was in play as the bike failed to stay on the road.
You are right, this community is disgusted by the local bar owners hosting this boozefest for every problem drinker in the DC area swarming over the town and making our roads more dangerous than they otherwise are with our local boozers out on the roadways.
Those who make these decisions to speed and or drive drunk never take anyone else into consideration with their self-centered behavior.  Hundreds, perhaps thousands of people, left this "event" without killing anyone, using designated drivers, cabs or limos and some simply stayed in the area hotels.  While those who are family and friends of the couple who died grieve their loss, they need to remember who it was who decided it was a great time to fly down the road.
It is not a matter of judging their character as most people who drive drunk, speed or drive aggressively are otherwise of good character. It is their reckless behavior that is killing us, not their character.  It is the decisions of people like you that is important, not the character of a dead person. Therefore, no one need forgive this couple for anything, but those who may otherwise kill others this coming year through their possible stupid acts of speeding and boozing could make other decisions. We pray they will.)

READER FEEDBACK:

Wow.. I just read the article about the two individuals who died after leaving from the Tiki Party. That article could have been written with a lot more class. Here's some guy that thinks that they know it all. You know nothing about those two people who left but can be paid to write an article that is insensitive and possibly inaccurate. You have no idea what made them crash on the night of that party. Who made you God that you can pass judgement on people? Report the facts.. that's it. There's no need to smear these deceased people's names in the mud. It's one thing to write the article after you received all of the facts, but you don't have them. This is the first time that I've read an article from this "so-called" paper and it definitely will be the last. It's obvious why you work where you work.  You can't take any criticism for what you write. You call the readers "idiots." What a great way to keep readers... you are the idiot and a jerk on top of that. You're not perfect and you shouldn't be pretending that you are.. If you want to educate the public about drunk driving and how dangerous it is.. simply say it. Don't mock these people's death for your own sake.. You know what they say about karma..
Shannon Bedits
(Editor's Note: Okay, Shannon, go out and drink and drive all you want, kill others and kill yourself and they will bury your cold carcass six feet under with your karma wrapped around your dead neck. We promise not to be judgmental in your case.)
