Wife-Beaters Round Up
Charles
County Sheriff’s Office Leads Local Efforts for
National Operation
26 Warrants
Served During Sweep
Charles County
Sheriff Rex W. Coffey said a warrant sweep conducted
last week by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office was
a tremendous success. October is Domestic Violence
Awareness Month and the sweep was part of the 6th
Annual National Family Violence Apprehension Detail
— an annual event in which law enforcement agencies
throughout the country attempt to serve outstanding
domestic-related warrants in their area on a
targeted date.
Members of the
Charles County Sheriff’s Office Domestic Violence
Unit coordinated this year’s sweep with assistance
from the Judicial Services Section, Tactical
Response Squad, Community Policing Unit, K-9 Unit,
Communications Section and Corrections Division, and
the Maryland State Police. The detail began Oct. 15
at 5 p.m. and ended on Oct. 16 at 1 a.m.
During the sweep,
officers attempted to serve 63 warrants. Of those,
25 people were located that night and taken into
custody. Another person turned himself in to police
the following day. Three criminal summonses were
served and one protective order was issued.
“So much work
goes into this sweep; there’s a lot of preparation
and planning involved,” said Sgt. Stephen Salvas, a
supervisor in the Domestic Violence Unit. “But the
outcome was good and our work paid off.”
