False Amber Alert Rumor

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is receiving numerous inquires regarding an Amber Alert supposedly issued for a 16-year-old female from Great Mills, Maryland who was reported missing on Monday, November 3, 2008.  An Amber Alert was never issued by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and the young lady returned home safely on Tuesday, November 4, 2008.

Apparently, a concerned citizen commenced a massive email effort which distributed misinformation about the young lady and the issuance of an Amber Alert with respect to her situation.  The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office would like to quell the rumor.  Again, the young lady safely returned home on Tuesday, November 4, 2008.

Sheriff Cameron would like to advise the public should an official Amber Alert ever be issued for a critical missing child,  a formal press release will also be issued from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office requesting the public’s assistance in locating the child.

Although the individual who started the massive email may have had good intentions, the misinformation is causing undue public concern.  Please make every effort to dispel this rumor.  Should members of the public receive this mistaken email, please do not forward it.
