TIME CHANGE, TEENAGE DRIVERS

Warn the kids to be aware

To the Editor:

I have a theory. No matter the responsibility shown by our teenage drivers we throw them a curve every fall. We change the light conditions without warning.

Check the disastrous teenage driver accidents last year and previous years which happen the first few weeks after the time change.

On the week after the change of time from Daylight Savings  to Standard, the driving which had been done in daylight since school started is done in night-time conditions. The driver with little experience driving after dark is fooled. Where everything was in sight before on the way home from band or sports practice, now, only what the headlights illuminate is visible. All the clues available in daylight are obscured. What happens? A few young drivers become confused by this. The result? A few more young people are killed and maimed.

Take this warning and pass it on the week before and the week after the change to Standard time. Be extra careful. Pay more attention to your good driving habits. Reduce the distractions, usually known as passengers. Night driving can be safe if the driver is concentrating on driving.
