Baltimore Ravens have the Thursday NFL game and should beat Cincinnati like a drum. I like the way “Big Ego” is finally running a complete game, he also activates Jamal Lewis. Steve “Airless” McNair is a first class act and is doing the job. So what if he can’t throw, neither could Billy Kilmer. A win over the Bengals will give the Ravens their division title. This group almost has me wearing purple.
Oh, my Jason Campbell is doing the job after two games he looks like a decent QB who can do it for years to come.
This week the Redskins host the Atlanta Falcons and the up and down running QB Michael Vick should be a win for the Skins.
Maryland blew it allowing 38 points (again). Their sorry defense can do it against (barely) the weak sissies on their schedule but the decent ones make the Terps defense look like traffic cops directing their opponents to the Terps end zone.
Navy plays Army this week, no hope for Army here!

ORIOLES IMPROVE
One of the needs in the off season for the Baltimore Orioles was to improve their pitching and indeed they did. Coming up next is the outfield where the Orioles would like to add veterans Luis Gonzalez, Kevin Mench and Jay Payton. They have already added catcher Bako and resigned Kevin Millar.
Pitching added – starts Jaret Wright, reliefs Jamie Walker, Scott Williamson, Danys Baez and sidearmer Chad Bradford. Bradford is a groundball pitcher (3 of every 4 outs) and allowed only one home run last season. The Mets were very upset at losing him. The Orioles still need a number one pitcher but with the relivers they have added they have upgraded their team.
DICKERSON STARS AT MTA
Lisa Dickerson is doing an outstanding job at the Maryland Transit Administration. She has directed MTA into one of the Top Ten run transit systems in the United States and she wants to expand MARC to Southern Maryland Cecil County/Delaware and the Hagerstown area.
One of Governor Elect Martin O’Malley’s top priorities is to provide expanded MARC service North, South and to the West, improve the Baltimore Metro and to provide more transportation opportunities in the Southern Maryland area and he has the support of State Senators Roy Dyson, Mike Miller, and Mac Middleton, Delegates Dave Rudolph, Murray Levy, Sue Kullen, John Bohanon, Joe Vallario, and Jim Proctor. Also Congressman Steny Hoyer is supportive of the efforts.
Infante Up For Honda Award for the Third Time
Infante is only the second player to be nominated three times
For the third-straight year, the Collegiate Women Sports Awards has announced that senior Paula Infante is one of four finalists for the Honda Sports Award, presented to the nation's top field hockey player. Infante, who won the honor last year, is one of just two players in the history of the award to be a three-time finalist.
Paula Infante led the Terrapins to the program's fifth NCAA Championship and second-straight on Nov. 19, as they defeated Wake Forest, 1-0, in Winston-Salem, N.C. It was the first time in the history of the program the team had won back-to-back titles.
Only the second field hockey Terp to win the Honda Award, Infante was recently named first team All-American by the National Coaches Association for the fourth time, also earning several other prestigious honors, including ACC Defensive Player of the Year acknowledgements for the second time. She helped the Terps post a team record-tying 12 shutouts as the defense ranked third in the nation with a 0.73 goals against average. She was also a threat on the offensive end. She was tied for first on the team with five game-winning goals, was second with 31 points and was tied for second with 12 goals.
Infante leaves Maryland as the most decorated player in the history of the program. She ranks among the all-time great Terrapins. Her 58 career goals are tied for the fifth-most all-time, while her 139 points rank seventh.
Wake Forest's Lauren Crandall, Connecticuts Lizzy Peija and Duke's Amy Stopford were also named finalists for the award.
West Chester University's Karen Shelton, current coach of the University of North Carolina, is the only other player to be nominated three times. She was won the honor from 1977-79.
The winner of the nationwide balloting of all NCAA senior women's administrators will become the field hockey nominee for the prestigious Honda-Broderick Cup, given annually to the nation's outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year.
In addition, America Honda will donate $1,000 to the women's athletic fund of each nominee's university. The winner's program will receive $5,000.
Women Terps Remain at No. 1 in AP Poll
Terps travel to Marshall on Wednesday.
Riding the nation's longest win streak, the Terrapin women's basketball team remains in the top spot of the Associated Press top 25 for the fourth-consecutive week. Maryland is traveling to Marshall on Wednesday, Nov. 29 to battle the Thundering Herd with tipoff scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
Maryland (7-0) started the season as the preseason-ranked No. 1 team in the nation and has not wavered in that position to date. The Terps are off to their best start in school history since 1991-92, while extending their win streak to 13 games, dating back to the NCAA Tournament last year.
The Terrapins are coming off a commanding win over the SEC's Mississippi, winning the Junkanoo Jam by scoring a tournament-record 110 points, while the Rebels netted 79. Senior Shay Doron, who scored a season-high 23 points in the game, was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Juniors Crystal Langhorne and Laura Harper were also named to the all-tournament team.
Maryland's trip to Huntington, W.Va., comes in the midst of a nine-game stretch in just 12 days. The game will be a rematch of the 2004 Terrapin Classic championship game when the Terps claimed the tournament crown by a score of 83-68.
The Thundering Herd are hosting the No. 1 team in the country in any sport for the first time ever. They come into the contest with a 5-1 record, Drake, 59-58, at the Caribbean Classic in Cancun, Mexico.
WMUC will be broadcasting the game live. An audio link is available through www.umterps.com. The game can also be viewed through Herd Zone All-Access with a paid subscription at www.herdzone.com.
The Terps will then return home to host UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Dec. 2. Tickets are available for purchase at www.umterps.com or by calling the Comcast Center Ticket Office at 1-800-IM-A-TERP.

Former champion Willie Pep died last week at age 84. His fights with Sandy Saddler were legend especially the 4th one on September 26, 1951 at New Yorks Polo Grounds, some called it the dirtiest fight ever. Pep lost and was suspended for 17 months, Saddler for two months. Our deepest sympathy goes to his family.
BOWIE STATE DROPS LIVINGSTONE IN CIAA OPENER
Beale Leads Bulldogs to 90-78 Victory Over Blue Bear
Bowie State University squandered a 28 point second half lead, turned the ball over a season high 29 times but still managed to come away with a 90-78 victory over visiting Livingstone College.
The Blue Bears trailed 46-25 at the break and had no answer for the BSU Bulldogs offensive barrage. Livingstone shot 10 of 29 (34.5%) in the first half compared to the Bulldogs’ 58.6% (17 of 29). Bowie State connected on all seven of its first half free throw attempts and knocked down 5 of 12 three-point attempts in the first half of play. Livingstone on the other hand, converted just 4 of 11 from the charity stripe and made only one of its six first half 3-pointers.
Livingstone made a serious run late in the second half, mainly as a result of 15 Bowie State second period turnovers. In fact, Livingstone cut the Bulldogs lead to eight points (83-74) with 1:16 left to play.
Bowie State senior transfer (East Carolina) Tyronne Beale scored a team high 32 points and led both teams in rebounds with 17 to pace the Bulldogs. Fellow senior Gil Goodrich scored 22 points on the evening for Bowie State followed by juniors Jason Ingram and Orlando Wright with 13 and 12 points respectively. As a team, Bowie State held Livingstone to 40.5% from the floor (30 of 74) in the contest. In contrast, BSU knocked down 35 of their 56 field goals (58.9%) but were outrebounded 39-38. Landin Bussie was Livingstone’s top scorer with 15 points and ranked second on the Blue Bears in rebounds with eight. Brent Cowels and Michael Duncan added 12 and 11 points respectively for the visitors. Marcus Lewis led Livingstone on the glass with 10 rebounds.
Bowie State (3-0 / 1-0 in the CIAA) will play its first CIAA divisional game of the season against arch rival Virginia Union – Saturday, December 2nd in New York City’s world famous Madison Square Garden as part of the Big Apple Classic. Tip time against the Panthers is set for 1:00 p.m. The Blue Bears will host Elizabeth City State on Thursday (11/28) at 7:30 p.m.

LADY BLUE BEARS FALL 79-48 TO LADY BULLDOGS
Bowie State Crushes Livingstone in CIAA Opener
Making their first home appearance of the season, Bowie State University’s Lady Bulldogs disposed of the visiting Lady Blue Bears 79-48. The win keeps BSU perfect at 4-0 and 1-0 in the CIAA.
Livingstone’s Lady Blue Bears (1-4, 0-1 CIAA) played Bowie State even over the first 3:49. However, BSU outscored Livingstone 17-0 over the next 6:58 to take a commanding 23-6 lead. Bowie State took advantage of Livingstone’s cold first half shooting (34.5%) but took only a 32-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Lady Bulldogs erased any question as to who the victor would be on this evening early in the second half. Bowie State’s advantage increased to double-digits (38-28) by the 18:36 mark and swelled to a 21 point advantage (57-36) midway through the second half.
In the end junior Clintoria Bryant led the Lady Blue Bears with 12 points, followed by Lina Brown with 11. Livingstone’s 19 turnovers compared to Bowie State’s 13, is what kept Livingstone behind the entire game. The Lady Blue Bears hit only 8 of 31 (27.5%) field goal attempts compared to the Lady Bulldogs’ 48.9% (22 of 45).
Junior Allyson Swailes (Silver Spring, MD) led Bowie State with 20 points, hitting 5 of 9 from the floor and 10 for 11 from the free throw line to go along with a team high eight rebounds. Senior Genet Moore (Accokeek, MD) added 15 points and Ashlee Knight (Burlington City, NJ) along with Markeya Watson (Clinton, MD) chipped in 13 with 10 points respectively for the Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Blue Bears will host Elizabeth City State University - Thursday November 30th at 5:30 p.m. while Bowie State University travels to Saint Paul’s College – Tuesday (12/5) for a 5:30 p.m. CIAA Eastern Division contest.

With the establishment of the Michael J. Gilbert Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting efforts to treat and eradicate the impact of HIV/AIDS in our community, the first Michael J. Gilbert Benefit Basketball Tournament was held December 16-17, 2005 at Trinity University, 125 Michigan Avenue, N.E., Washington, DC. We were able to raise $2,000.00 for Food & Friends, a non-profit organization in northeast DC that prepares specialized nutritious meals with home delivery to more than 1200 men, women and children battling HIV/AIDS and other life threatening illnesses free of charge. The tournament featured eight teams representing well-known high schools from the Washington Metropolitan area including Cardozo, MM Washington, Wakefield School, Anacostia, Ballou, Sidwell Friends, Randolph Macon Academy and McKinley Tech. The foundation was recently established in memory of Michael J. Gilbert, a beloved son, husband, and father who died in 1994 from HIV/AIDS. Michael was a champion of mentoring young people in the metropolitan DC area for many years. He was a tutor, counselor and basketball coach who emphasized during his lifetime, the importance of providing guidance and leadership in the development of our next generation of young people. This tournament will bring attention to the epidemic of HIV/AIDS in our area and showcase the wealth of young talented athletes and committed students who live in our neighborhoods and communities.
Proceeds from this event will benefit African American Coalition Against AIDS. AACAA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to promoting HIV/AIDS prevention education. Through the assistance of uncompensated volunteers, they carry out prevention-based programs throughout the northeast with a specific focus on the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. WE GET LETTERS….
Bill,
Dan is too much, he has helped me almost put my old scrapbook I lost back together. It would have taken me till I was at least 80 at the pace I was going.
P.S. One article went back to 1947 playing 90 lb basketball at the SE Boys Club.
John
Bill,
Funny John Hoffman should reply..I just spoke with Angelo Spiridopoulos' (Eastern baseball ' 41) nephew on Friday... who I grew up with at Deal and WW.....to ask if he was related .....
My friend said ....Angelo "Spiro" was his uncle ..and he just recently passed about a month ago....My friend Charlie is also called "Spiro"....
I did add the inter-high baseball champion lineups to the last updated spreadsheet....and finding all the all high teams is still a work in progress....I'll look in my stack when I get home to see if I found those from 40 & 41 this past weekend.
Dan
Dan,
You do a super job!
Bill
Thanks a bunch, Bill. My good friend who is not with us any more went to school with Pantos. Joan wrote the column that the Times Herald used to run with a rep from each school reporting on his/her school activities. Would love to see some of those. Should have cut them out. I remember our school's, Eastern, rep, Gracie Hummel wrote ours.
Last time we saw Pantos was at Rosecroft a few years back. I didn't know him, but George did.
Marlene
Marlene,
Jimmy was a great one.
Bill
Good morning to everyone on another gorgeous day in our beautiful state. Have an important prayer request: My oldest son Bob, who received Jesus thru his brother Daniel, is scheduled to leave shortly for St. Augustine for colonoscopy and upper and lower GI tests. He is nervous about the anesthesia he says so we prayed that the Prince of Peace would give him peace, which he did, of course. And I am reminded that the "power of the prayers of a mother" are never to be underestimated.
The severe back pain and intestinal pain that Bob has had are no more and the Lord has provided him now with an excellent physician. Bob and his son Robert, 13, my cherished grandson, have both been ill with congestion in their sinuses and lungs so prayers are appreciated for these infections to leave their bodies immediately. My son David who lives with Bob and Robert will be along to do the driving and offer support and brotherly love. And probably amusement, they are constantly joking with each other.
Bob is very weak from not being able to eat for two days. I thank God for traveling mercies and a myriad of angels to be with them and protect them on their journey today.
Thanks to all who pray for me and my family.
God bless and love to all, Dale
Dale,
Our prayers are with you.

Hi Bill,
My name is Ben Trittipoe. I'm a member of the Bob Davids SABR Chapter, and was hoping you'd be able to help pass along some information about a local baseball player.
Jay Franklin was one of the brightest stars on the local high school baseball scene in 1971, when he was drafted in the first round out of James Madison High School in Vienna. He was rushed to the big leagues by the San Diego Padres, hurt his arm, and it's all been downhill since then. http://www.baseball-reference.com/f/frankja02.shtml
A group of Northern Virginians who are friends of Jay are trying to help him out. I have attached information about a gathering planned for Dec. 7 (next week) in Fairfax. If you could help get out the word to the Bob Davids Chapter members, I would appreciate it.
In addition, here is a link to an article on Jay from the Washington Times on Nov. 14:

I appreciate anything you can do. I think Jay will get a lot of support from this and realize that maybe things aren't as bad as they seem.
Thanks!

Ben,
I hope everyone that can, will attend.

Bill,
I was pleased upon returning from the holiday weekend to discover that Len
and I actually do agree on something vis a vis the Nats:
"8. I cannot foresee a situation where 2,200 disgruntled fans decide to
get up and walk out of a NATIONALS game to protest a decade of lousy
baseball."
Indeed, I agree that's extremely unlikely to happen until early April,
2015.
Andy
Andy,
I think we all agree with that.

Bill,
I’m beginning to believe that I’m becoming an egocentric. I was all high/All Met 1940 and 1941 at Eastern High School, led inter-high in batting .556 in 1941. Have news paper clippings to prove it. The information stats making the rounds did not include baseball Lefty Lou Gehrig.
J.C.H.
Jack,
You are a great one, and always have been.

John,
Good information.

Dear Bill,
Angie was a nice guy. In '41 Angie was quite heavy but could hit. Coach Guyon moved me to the outfield because I could run [A Little]. Billy Hite could run like the wind. His son, Billy played on one of my Babe Ruth Teams and presently is a coach for the Hokies. Except for my marriage in 1944, Father Antoine Barrett at Walter Reed Hospital, where I was recouperating from war wounds, Eastern H.S. memories remain the Halcyon days of my life. I am an incurable sentimentalist and my wife, Mary Occassionally only [Sans-Charity] hints I was treated on the wrong ward. Read everything you write despite you went to the wrong High School,
Affectionately. John Charles Francis
John,
I worked with Billy Hite at the C&P Telephone Company in the Summer of 1951 at the Anacostia Frame, 2815 N ST, SE in DC. Some of the others there were Johnny Saine, Bob Ashby, Walter Auer, Mary Whelan (Bill Collins sister), Shirley Lash, Bill Bury, Jerry Loftus, Sid Goad, “Feet” Rollman and the late Joan Pumphrey.

SPORTS NOTES
Thanks to Dan Morrison for the clips he sent one was when Jim Wexler set the inter-high scoring record for a single game that he set in a Western win over Charlotte Hall. Also playing in that one were Frank Cohen and Jack Dade, they and Wexler played on the DC Stars with me against Stonewall A.C. at Terrill Jr. High in DC. WE lost 102-77 with Elgin “Rabbitt” Baylor scoring 44 points for the winners and Wexler had 34, I had 6. Also in that Western game Jim Fowler played for Western and I had played with Fowler at Bell.
Wexller broke Lonnie Herzbrun’s record of 41 set 12 days before. Herzbrun who also was a great football player who later played football at Tennessee with Roosevelt great Robbie Smithers.
Herzbrun was one of the great DC athletes of the early 1950’s who often times gets overlooked.
Theodore Roosevelt High School of DC finally got their gym floor replaced, it should have been replaced 50 years ago.
Our deepest sympathy goes to the family of Pat Dobson who passed away. He was one of four Baltimore Oriole pitchers to win 20 games in 1971.
Please be advised the 2006 Black College Hoops Classic (December 27th - 29th) in Los Angeles (CA) has been cancelled. Bowie State University Head Men’s Coach Luke D’Alessio will make every possible effort to replace the three games which were scheduled and release a revised Bulldogs schedule ASAP.
