Wildewood Gas Leak Response Called Fiasco

Resident says confusion reigns supreme as construction workers buzz around on routine work and residents are either told nothing or blocked from leaving homes...letter to the editor
CALIFORNIA (April 26, 2006) ---- Washington Gas at 10 am warned the 911 Center that they would have a 30 minute response...at 10:23 am, they updated their response as being another 45 minutes....if they sell gas in this area, why don't they have repair crews in the area?
Some volunteers fail to answer call for help at gas line rupture...squad from Hollywood and engine from Bay District Co. 9 failed to answer call for response to a gas line break on White Oak Parkway at 10 am today,  many others are on the scene... construction workers ripped up another natural gas line during construction, a fairly regular occurrence at Stanley Martin's home construction site at Wildewood.  Washington Gas has been called to shut down and repair the line and a hazmat incident of major proportions is being called out with some fire units not responding to the call while several trucks and engines are spreading out and taking up precautionary positions.  Will construction crews stop wasting the time of volunteers who have to respond to these incidents?  Firefighters can't put out a gas explosion, only the resulting fires... The county government has a fine system in place for false burglar alarm calls at homes and businesses, why not a user tax going to the volunteer fire and rescue companies for responses caused by reckless digging by construction crews? If you dig into a underground utility without calling Miss Utility at your home, you can be liable for repairs.
Will builders have to pay a fine for having all of the volunteer firefighters respond? Not likely, due to the cozy relationships between the builders and the good old boy government....Firefighters are evacuating homes along Willow Creek Way and ordering all vehicles to not be started so as not to set off sparks in the gas leak area....wind is not on the side of the firefighters as it is barely moving and not aiding at dissipating the gas fumes....many of the homes being evacuated are vacant while some new homes are occupied....latest report on winds is that some of the fumes are being dispersed....a puncture was placed in a six inch gas line, firefighters now report it to be a small puncture from an outrigger on a excavating machine...

Killer Behind the Wheel Takes Two Lives
Driver suspected of being under influence struck two vehicles in hit and run action on Rt. 231 near Prince Frederick before running a private ambulance off the road and into a truck on Rt. 4 near German Chapel Road.  Calvert Sheriff Mike Evans told ST. MARY'S TODAY that the driver and patient in the ambulance were both killed by the at fault driver of a 1993 Thunderbird.  Sheriff Evans said that Albert Reigle, Jr., 39, of Waldorf hit the rear of a AAA Ambulance Service vehicle causing it to spin out and cross the median strip and into the northbound lanes of Rt. 4 where it was struck by a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck operated by Joseph DeBay, 45, of St. Leonard. The van then exploded into flames, reports Sheriff Evans.  Killed were Natala Rose Lowery, the driver of the ambulance and Theresa Gant, 51, of White Sands. Reigle was taken to the PG Trauma Center while the operator of the pickup truck was treated and released at Calvert Memorial for minor injuries.

Hambone's Election Year Smoke and Mirrors Continues with Attempt to Give Away Critically Needed School Site at Great Mills

Tommy 'Hambone' McKay  ST. MARY'S TODAY photo

LEXINGTON PARK --- Will the Catholic Church provide 55 acres of land located in the middle of Lexington Park, already served by public sewer and water, already in the Lexington Park development district for low-income and work-force housing?  While a Wildewood resident attempted to shame the St. Mary's Board for failing to hop on Commissioner Tommy "Hambone" McKay's campaign train which now boasts a proposal for giving away a valuable school site next to Great Mills High School, the Archdiocese of Washington owns 55 acres of land behind the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Lexington Park.
This site could easily be used to make a meaningful workforce housing site which the county could let sail through the zoning process.  McKay has proposed to give away a site the county paid a million bucks for six years ago in order to get rid of an old trailer park next to the high school as $20 million bucks was invested in renovating the school.  Now McKay has proposed to give away the potential middle school site for construction of low income duplexes.  Don't spend too much time trying to figure out what is up with McKay as the taxpayers just spent $7 million getting rid of duplex housing at the Flat Tops in Lexington Park.

An innocent victim of a raging driver who ran three cars off of Rt. 5, causing two of them to collide with each other nearly head-on, is removed from a car by Second District VFD personnel and assisted by Bay District VFD and Lexington Park Volunteer rescue workers.

Maryland State Trooper George White patrols the St. Mary's fairgrounds after he and Trooper Shugart found this Lincoln Continental operated by a man who allegedly ran three vehicles off Rt. 5 at Great Mills in front of Little Flower School.  Police searched the fairgrounds, the Fastop and the school complex for the suspect who dumped his car in the field near the entrance to the fair.

CHINGVILLE ---  A man operating a Dodge pickup at about 10:30 pm on Tuesday failed to notice that he was running out of roadway while barreling along on Chingville Road and ran his truck completely across both lanes of traffic on Rt. 5 before plowing through the woods.   A deputy on the scene said that this wreck could have been much worse as the operator of the truck nearly t-boned another vehicle.  Second District fire and rescue volunteers arrived to stabilize the driver and Maryland State Police Med-Evac Helicopter Trooper Seven flew the driver to a trauma center.

St. Mary's Sheriff David Zylak told ST. MARY'S TODAY that two of his deputies were not injured in sudden crashes on Monday morning on Rt. 5 in the Redgate area when a snow shower whizzed through the area leaving a trace of snow on the roads..."Slippery roads" said the Sheriff, noting that only minor damage was done to the vehicles.  A garbage truck went of the road in St. James, causing a wrecker to be brought in to pick up the truck and 6 tons of trash it was hauling. Police advise motorists to slow dramatically when roads are "slippery".
