Arrest Made in Homicide of Elderly Woman

At approximately 10:58 am, on Saturday, September 4, 2004, District police report they were called to 527 Hilltop Terrace, SE. Upon arrival police discovered 78- year-old Martha Byrd of the Hilltop Terrace address in an unconscious condition. She was transported to the DC Medical Examiner's Office and pronounced dead.

The DC Medical Examiner has ruled the death due to strangulation and manner a homicide.

On September 10, 2004, atapproximately 12:15 pm, the case was closed with the arrest of 18-year-old Robert Pettus, of the 500 block of Hilltop Terrace, SE. Mr. Pettus was arrested in the 500 block of Indiana Avenuen, NW, without incident, on a felony murder arrest warrant.
