Virginia Railway Express

Marc Train System

While the gas prices rise, making mass transit more beneficial than ever, the Republican-controlled senate voted to kill off Amtrak.  Read about this New Jersey man's campaign to restore sane fares for commuters and keep vehicles off highways.  SAVE Amtrak

While communities across Maryland are linked by the Maryland MARC system for commuters, modern mass transit for this region, such as the self-propelled rail car shown above, is being used in many parts of America, just not in this region.  The Ehrlich Administration has opposed commuter rail for Southern Maryland while Democrat Martin O'Malley has pledged to bring commuter rail to the region, if elected governor.  MARC could be implemented over the existing CSX tracks with upgrades, double tracking and liability indemnification from the state for the railroad in order to use it's track system. CSX lines from Morgantown and Aquasco lead to Upper Marlboro and Bowie where the line connects to the Amtrak and MARC main lines between DC and Baltimore.

Democrats pledge to bring commuter rail to Southern Maryland....at this rail crossing of Leonardtown Road in Waldorf, local legislators met with Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley, second from right, and U. S. Rep. Steny Hoyer, center, to publicly announce their support of the transportation study bill sponsored by Sen. Roy Dyson and Sen. Mac Middleton; and to bring commuter rail to the region.  Left to right are: Del. John Bohanan (D. Lexington Park) Del. Anthony Brown, running mate of O'Malley, Dyson, Hoyer, Middleton, O'Malley and Del. Sally Jameson (D. La Plata).

Short Chase Ends in Woods
Man let jailbird drive his car, flipped it upside down in the woods fleeing from police
The man in the black tee shirt at center told State Police Sgt. Gary Willis that he let a man drive whom he had met at the Cadillac Jack's bar in Lexington Park two nights earlier.  The driver fled at a high rate of speed from Tpr. Shugart, above right, rather than stop.  After speeding south on Rt. 5 from Rt. 245, the man left the highway on the wrong side of the road and flipped over into the woods.  Leonardtown Volunteer Rescue Squad personnel were on the scene and treated the driver at the scene before taking him to St. Mary's Hospital.   The owner of the car was unhurt.  more photos

The officer with the shooting victim reports that the shot man has a weak pulse.  The victim is located near the apartment building next to Monk's Inn.  Officers are calling in the crime lab and for detectives to be awakened so they can respond to what may soon be a murder scene.  Ridge Vol. Fire Dept. has been called out to set up a landing site for Maryland State Police Med-Evac helicopter  Trooper Seven which is preparing to land to pickup thenearly dead man.  CPR is now in progress.....chopper may not even fly out the shooting victim due to the declining health of the suspect.  A newer model green minivan is now listed as a possible suspect vehicle.  An officer reports that he was about 100 yards away from where the shooting took place at the bar which has been a constant sources of complaints, police calls and turmoil.  A black male with a white shirt was described as the shooter.  He had on a black jacket and a white shirt.
