Ben Norman Powell
US Navy Veteran

Ben Norman Powell, 53, of Callaway, Md., died on Sunday, December 5, 2004 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown, Md.

Born on November 3, 1951 in Tifton, Ga., he is the son of Winona Norman Powell and the late Glen Powell.

Ben graduated from Tift High School in Tifton, Ga. and attended Abraham Baldwin College and Georgia Southwestern College. He joined the United States Navy in May of 1975 and retired after 20 years of service in October of 1995. Upon retirement Ben and his family made St. Mary’s County their home. Preceding his death, he was employed by the Department of the Navy at NAVAIRSEFAC in Solomon’s, Md.. Ben enjoyed being with his family, reading, bowling, working with his hands, shooting pool with his sons and was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 25 years Jennifer Ann Noles Powell of Callaway, MD and children Daniel Lee Powell of Callaway, MD and Glen Taylor Powell of Herndon, VA. He is also survived by his siblings Charlie Powell of Tifton, GA; Lynn McKennize of Atlanta, GA; Glennis Sykes of Cummings, GA; Fred Powell of Tifton, GA; and nine nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. 22955 Hollywood Rd. Leonardtown, MD on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 9, 2004 at St. Nicholas Chapel, Patuxent River N.A.S. at 1:30 p.m. with Chaplain Jon Rozema officiating. Interment will follow at Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD.

Memorial Contributions can be made to the Ben N. Powell Memorial Fund, Cedar Point Federal Credit Union, 21800 Shangri La Drive, Lexington Park, MD 20653. This fund has been designated for Ben’s youngest son, Daniel, to continue his college education.
