Bomb Found Next to Sheriff's Station
WALDORF --- On Wednesday, March 31 at approximately 8:49 a.m., Charles County Sheriffs Officers responded to the Waldorf District Station at the corner of Substation Road and Old Washington Road for the report of a suspicious item.
Investigation revealed a Verizon employee was doing maintenance work in the area when he observed a backpack near the base of a tree and a telephone pole.
The employee noticed items inside the bag were suspicious and notified the Sheriffs Office. Officers responded and found a small propane tank, wires and a switch inside the bag.
The building, which houses Sheriffs Office and Department of Natural Resources (DNR) personnel, was evacuated as well as several nearby businesses, including the BB&T bank.
The Maryland State Fire Marshals Office Bomb Squad was notified and responded to the scene. At approximately 11:30 a.m., the bomb squad disrupted the item. Their investigation revealed the item was not a bomb. DNR Police and Maryland State Police also responded to the scene.
The Charles County Sheriffs Office is continuing the investigation. Anyone with information regarding the suspicious item is asked to contact the Sheriffs Office at 301-932-2222.
