Bookkeeper Kept the Money and the Books

Montgomery County Police report that on August 25, 2004, a 50-year-old male victim from Potomac, came to the 1st District station to report a forgery of checks dating back to at least early June of 2004. After the investigation was initiated, it was learned that the suspect was also responsible for embezzling over $130,000.00 from the victim.

First District Officer Joseph Dugan initiated the investigation when the victim became aware of accounting irregularities in his property management and real estate businesses, and reported them to police. The investigation revealed that an unauthorized credit card was opened on his account by his office manager/bookkeeper. The credit card had an unpaid balance of over $4,000. It was also learned that some funds that had been received and deposited in the business account could not be found.

When the bookkeeper-suspect was asked to produce bank statements that she was supposed to maintain, she claimed she could not locate them. When the records were received from the bank, they showed forged signatures and numerous unauthorized checks made out to the suspect. She was fired by the victim on August 26, after having been employed by him since October of 2003.

The largest amount of a fraudulent check was for the purchase of an automobile. Search warrants were obtained for both the suspect’s residence and for that vehicle. Records for the months of October through December of 2003 have yet to be reviewed, therefore additional charges are possible.

Tinita Crystal Jordan, age 40, of the 120 block of Elmira Lane in Gaithersburg, was arrested September 14, and charged with four counts of Theft Over $500, and one count of Theft Scheme over $500. She was released from the Montgomery County Detention Center on September 15 on an unsecured personal bond of $100,000.
