BUS DRIVER INJURED IN
MULTI VEHICLE CRASH
|
(Rosedale, MD) Maryland State Police Crash Team investigators are continuing their probe into a late evening crash on the JFK Highway (I-95), just north of the Baltimore Beltway (I-695) in Baltimore County, which snarled northbound traffic for several hours, and left the driver of a charter bus in serious condition, and two other
passengers at area hospitals with minor injuries.
The bus driver is identified as Keith Schmitt, 55, of the 100-block of Rockview Avenue, North Plainfield, New Jersey. He was flown by State Police helicopter to Shock Trauma in Baltimore with injuries
deemed serious at the time of the crash.
Last night, shortly before 7:30 p.m., troopers from the JFK Highway Barrack were dispatched to a vehicle crash involving a charter
bus, two tractor-trailer rigs, and a small passenger vehicle. Preliminary investigation indicates that all vehicles were being driven north on the Interstate. For
reasons currently unknown, the charter bus impacted the rear of the trailer of the first truck, being driven in the rightmost lane of four.
Schmitt apparently lost control of the bus, which rolled in reverse, and struck a small passenger vehicle. The bus continued to roll
in reverse, before being struck by a second tractor-trailer being driven in the adjacent lane. The charter bus was subsequently struck along the left rear and came to a rest in a ditch along the
right side of the travel lanes.
The bus is owned by Stout’s Charter Service of Trenton, New Jersey. Five staff members and 27 hearing-impaired students were passengers on the bus. The 12 boys and 15 girls (ages 11-15), were taken to four Baltimore area hospitals for medical assessments. Fire/Rescue personnel manning 10 ambulances from several Baltimore
County fire stations were dispatched to transport the passengers: 16 were taken to Franklin Square; five to Johns Hopkins Bayview; five to G.B.M.C;
and two to Johns Hopkins.
The students and staff members were returning to the Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf in Trenton, New Jersey. They had
attended a sporting event at the Maryland School for the Deaf in Columbia, Maryland. Company officials later dispatched a second driver and bus
to return all passengers to New Jersey.
The first truck, a 1993 Mack, which was not loaded, is owned by Salem Iron and Metal of Chester, Pennsylvania. The 73 year-old male driver from Chester, Pennsylvania, was not injured in the crash. The second truck, a 2003 Peterbilt loaded with beans, is leased to Bayde
Logistics of Miami, Florida. The 35 year-old male driver from Hialeah, Florida, was not injured. He was able to drive the truck from the scene. The passenger vehicle was driven by a 31 year-old female resident of Edgewood, Maryland. She was able to drive the 1997 Plymouth from the scene.
Members of the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section also responded to the scene to conduct a preliminary analysis.
The severely damaged bus and disabled trailer were towed to a Baltimore-area storage facility for post-crash investigation purposes.
Personnel from the Maryland Transportation Authority responded to assist troopers with traffic control. The leftmost lane was open
throughout the initial investigation. All lanes were cleared for travel approximately five hours later.
The investigation is being conducted by members of the State Police Crash Team. They are being assisted by JFK Barrack personnel.
No charges have been filed at this time. This investigation is continuing.
