ST. MARY’S TODAY

CALLAWAY— On Feb. 15th, near the intersection of Buck Redman Road and Brent Lane, a small black Nissan burst into flames.  Firefighters soon responded and extinguished the blaze.  Fortunately, no one suffered any injuries.

The car’s young owner, who gave his name as Christopher Joseph Jones but did not disclose his age, recounted to ST MARY’S TODAY that he was backing up when the passenger, his sister, abruptly elbowed him.  This caused him to drive the car into one of the deep ditches which line the road.  His sister then fled the vehicle as he attempted to pull out.

Stan and Tammy Bowen, in front of whose house the accident occurred, recounted to ST MARY’S TODAY that Jones rapidly switched between gears while running the engine.  Evidently, his engine was dangerously low on oil, as intense friction quickly built up and the car caught fire.  Jones was able to extricate himself from the vehicle to safety across the road.

Jones revealed to ST MARY’S TODAY that he does not have a driver’s license.  Indeed, the Bowens told ST MARY’S TODAY that unlicensed, untagged youths often zoom up and down Buck Redman Road, which is paved but narrow.  “This bull---- happens all too often,” complained Stan.  “We’ve got a ten year old kid, but we’re too afraid to even let him cross the street.”
