CAT POPULATION A CONCERN AT HEALTH DEPARTMENT
LEONARDTOWN, MD (March 21, 2005) An increase in the number of stray cats taking up residence on the grounds of the Marek building on Peabody St. in Leonardtown, has prompted the health department to ask Animal Control to remove the unwanted cats in an effort to improve public safety at the building.
Residents in the area are advised that cats with or without identification tags that are picked up on the health department campus will be taken to the Tri-County Animal Shelter in Hughesville. There they will be evaluated for four days. Shelter staff will attempt to reunite animals with owners before placing the animals in the shelters adoption program or ferrel cat rescue program. In some cases, unwanted cats may be euthanized.
The health department encourages county pet owners to buy identification tags for their pets and have their pets vaccinated for rabies to protect themselves and their neighbors. See your local vet or attend one of the monthly rabies shot clinics sponsored by the Southern Maryland Animal Welfare League. The next clinic is April 11 at the County Fairgrounds. Rabies shots are $10 and include a registration tag for your pet. Please call 301-373-5659 for more information.
