CHILD KILLED IN CHARLES COUNTY CRASH
(Waldorf, MD) -- A child was killed and five other people were injured in a three vehicle crash that occurred last evening at a busy Charles County intersection.
The deceased victim is identified as Justin Marshall, 5, who was riding with his family when their car was struck from behind. The exact address of the family is unknown at this time, but it is believed they may be from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The other injured family members are Sheyna Marshall, 29, who was the driver of their 1999 Oldsmobile Alero, her husband, James Marshall, age unknown, and their two other children, McKenna Marshall, 2, and Christian Marshall, 7. Sheyna and James Marshall were airlifted to the Washington Hospital Center where they are listed in stable condition. The two children were both flown to Children's Hospital where McKenna Marshall is listed in stable condition and Christian Marshall is listed in critical condition.
Also injured in the crash was Willie C. Johnson, 19, of the 3500-block of Norwood Court, Waldorf, Md. He was flown to Washington Hospital Center and is listed in stable condition. Johnson was driving a 98 Nissan Sentra and was alone in the car.
The third vehicle involved in the crash was a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by a 16-year-old male from Waldorf. He was not injured in the crash and was alone. He is not being named because he is a juvenile and the investigation has not determined who is being charged in the crash and what charges will be placed.
Just before 7:00 p.m. last night, the Marshall family was stopped in a left turn lane on southbound Rt. 301 at St. Patrick's Drive. Willie Johnson and the 16-year-old driver were southbound on Rt. 301 approaching the intersection. The preliminary investigation indicates Willie Johnson's vehicle was in lane two, when it sideswiped the vehicle driven by the 16-year-old, which was in lane one (fast lane). Willie Johnson's vehicle continued to the left and rear-ended the Marshall family's Oldsmobile, causing both vehicles to overturn. The Chevrolet Malibu then struck the Oldsmobile as it was spinning in lane one.
Rescue units and State Police responded to the scene. Justin Marshall was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured were flown by two Maryland State Police helicopters and a helicopter from the U.S. Park Police.
An exact cause of the crash has not been determined, although speed is being considered as a contributing factor. No charges have been placed. The Maryland State Police CRASH Team and troopers from the La Plata Barracks are continuing the investigation.
