Clarence T Sonny Melvin
Clarence T. “Sonny” Melvin, 74 of Callaway, Maryland
died at St. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown, MD on Saturday, July 9, 2005.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland on November 18, 1930, he was the son of the late
Clarence T. and Elsie L. Heathcote Melvin.
Mr. Melvin with his family moved to St. Mary’s County as a young man where he
graduated form Charlotte Hall Military Academy. At the age of 16 he began his
love of wood working by building his first boat, which lead to his first
business Melvin Boats in Hollywood, MD. One of the many boats he built was raced
in the Presidential Cup Regatta in Washington, DC. In the 1970’s he owned Melvin
Construction Company which built a number of buildings in the county which
included the first Hardee’s in Lexington Park, Racquet Club and buildings on the
Patuxent River Naval Air Station.
Since the 1980’s he has been specializing in customize wood working, making the
front doors to Holy Face Catholic Church and works for St. Mary’s College. Also
he made fiber glass passenger ships and ferry models to be used at the John
Taylor Tidal Basin Testing facilities.
He will be remembered as a dedicated strong father and friend and multi-talented
artist.
Surviving is his wife Patricia Rutan Melvin, five children, Terri Melvin of Tall
Timbers, MD, Stacey Cimo of Richmond, VA, Kelly Bullard of Schwrnskville, PA,
Glenn Melvin of Dahlonega, GA, Craig Melvin of Lexington Park, MD, eleven
grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a brother, Lloyd Melvin of Bethany
Beach, DE.
Family and friends will be received at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, Leonardtown,
Maryland on Wednesday , July 13, 2005 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. where a
Service of Remembrance will be held at 6:00 p.m. with Reverend Paula Halliday,
Rector of St. Andres Episcopal Church officiating.
Interment will be private.
