COAST GUARD CUTTER RETURNS TO PORTSMOUTH
PORTSMOUTH, Va.-Coast Guard Cutter Forward returns home Wednesday at 10 a.m. after a 66-day homeland security patrol in the Windward Passage and Florida Straits.
During the patrol, Forward participated in
Operation Able Sentry, rescuing Haitian and Cuban migrants found in unseaworthy vessels
and returning them to their respective countries. In addition to Operation Able Sentry,
Forward participated in Operation Compassion, a joint operation with the Bahamian Royal
Defense Force tasked with stopping the flow of illegal immigrants into the Bahamas.
Also during the patrol, Forward rescued a Haitian fishing vessel blown to sea by Hurricane
Ivan after high winds from the hurricane tore the vessel from its anchorage. With the crew
unable to start its engines, the vessel drifted in the Caribbean Sea for eight days before
Forward towed it and its five crewmen safely back to Haiti.
Forward's crew boarded 23 vessels and provided safe refuge for over 65 migrants during the patrol. While migrants were on board Forward, they were provided with food, water and medical care.
Since leaving Portsmouth on July 26, Forward's crew has worked with numerous Coast Guard units to carry out missions in support of homeland security, illegal migrant operations and counter-drug interdiction.
Forward is one of six 270-foot medium endurance cutters homeported at Integrated Support Command in Portsmouth.
