Crack Mayor is Back!
Former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry won a race for DC City Council, whipping his old political protege by a whopping margin, representing one of the city's poorest areas, Annacostia. Barry was convicted of using crack cocaine while mayor and won his office again after serving a term in prison.
Two years ago, he dropped out of a
race for council when he was caught with crack cocaine in a DC park.
Some voters say that Barry is the only official that ever delivered summer jobs for youths or cared for the poor. Barry's victory was one of three DC city council races which saw incumbents tossed out by the voters, making DC Mayor Anthony Williams sit up and pay attention to what could be a growing wave of unrest with the way the city government is viewed in poorer neighborhoods.
