Daniel William McCoy, Sr. 55

Daniel William McCoy, Sr. 55, of Hollywood, MD, died of complications from a brain tumor on Sunday, August 8, 2004 at the Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC.

Born on September 8, 1948 in Washington, DC, he was the son of Elizabeth Crowley McCoy of St. Gabriel’s Manor, Scotland, MD and the late Frederick Louis McCoy.

Mr. McCoy was raised at St. Gabriel’s Manor on the Western shore of the Potomac River in Scotland, MD. He attended St. Michael’s School in Ridge, MD and was a graduate of Ryken High School in Leonardtown, MD. He earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland and received an MBA at the Florida Institute of Technology. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, MD.

He earned the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award in July 2001 for his accomplishments and dedication to duty in support of the United States Navy as Assistant for Electronic Warfare to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Air Programs. He represented the Navy in other activities including the association of Old Crows, as a speaker at forums, and as a member of the Journal of Electronic Defense editorial board. Mr. McCoy retired in 2003 after 37 years of service as a Naval Civil Servant at Patuxent River Naval Air Station and the Pentagon.

Mr. McCoy inherited his deceased father’s love of Southern Maryland’s rural beauty and rich history. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and crabbing. He traveled extensively and was an accomplished sailor. He raced competitively in the Chesapeake Bay and sailed often to Florida, Newport and Hawaii.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his longtime companion, Angela Baylis of Hollywood, MD, his son Daniel McCoy, Jr., a daughter Sharon and her daughter Toria Avent, all of Berwyn Heights, MD, eleven brothers and sisters, Frederick Louis McCoy, Jr., of Silver Spring, MD, John C. McCoy of Baltimore, MD, Joseph S. McCoy of Philadelphia, PA, Mary Blohm of Boston, MA, Thomas A. McCoy of Geneva, Switzerland, Anne Hayes of Tracy’s Landing, MD, Christopher P. McCoy of Fairfax Station, VA, Muffin Padukiewicz of St. Gabriel’s Manor, MD Nicholas McCoy and Mark McCoy both of Timonium, MD, and Matthew McCoy of Metuchen, NJ.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 13, 2004 from 5:00 until 8:00 pm at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Ridge, MD. Prayers will be recited at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at 10:00 am. The Reverend Maurice O’Connell will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
