"We don't expect a dozen to be involved in this," said Charles County Sheriff Fred Davis on Sunday when awakened at his home. "We gave everyone the day off to be able to catch up on sleep, it's been a pretty grueling two weeks.""We are now up to 5 arrests with more expected," said Sheriff Davis. "We will likely end up with about 8 people involved and only one of them was employed at the site, that was Speed, and he apparently is the only one of the suspects that came back to the scene when he arrived back to direct traffic. The rest may have gotten their look at it by just watching tv." Sheriff Davis said that as of yet there hasn't been any threats made against families of those involved. "But that could change when its time to go to trial." One of those arrested is an Accokeek Vol. Fire Dept. member who was immediately suspended as a member by the officials of the dept. who expressed embarrassment and regret over the activities of their firefighter. Accokeek volunteers were put at risk in fighting the fires caused by one of their members. Those involved could be imprisoned for up to 20 years. ![]() photo courtesy of ABC 7 News Aaron Speed says he did it....confesses to setting major Maryland fires... read affadavit by FBI agent in this week's print edition now on newsstands 7-11 Stabbing Slice and dice keep cops on the run.... Arrest of Security Guard for Arson of Homes Aaron Speed, 21, of Waldorf, was arrested after a search warrant of his home was executed. Speed had been a client of the Alternatives for Youth and Families, which is based in Charlotte Hall, which treated him for mental health. Speed had been an early focus of the investigation after he had been on the scene of the fire early on Dec. 6th, about an hour before the more than 20 arson fires were set. Speed had told investigators he went to the scene to visit a security guard on duty at Hunters Brooke, the same job site at which he was employed as a guard. An accelerant was used to set the fires with significant evidence gained from the many attempts to start fires which failed to ignite the structures. The arson fire was the largest in Maryland history with more than 100 investigators participating in the effort to learn who had lit the fires. With the nation-wide track record of ELF, Earth Liberation Front, in setting fires to new homes under construction and the torching of auto dealerships, much of the focus had been placed on possible Eco-Terror. One Dead on Chancellors Run Road GREAT MILLS (Dec. 2)--- A early morning crash on Chancellors Run Road took one life due to the speed and drunk driving on the part of the operator of a Ford Focus heading north on Rt. 237 at about 3 am. State Trooper Matt Davis told ST. MARY'S TODAY that the driver was going too fast when he lost control on a curve and hit a pole and killed his passenger, Christine Lee Harper, 21, of Lexington Park. Jesse John Harper, 27, was flown to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda and the alleged drunken idiot behind the wheel, William Francis Heather, 21, refused treatment and is facing charges of drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter by motor vehicle pending a review by the states attorney's office. Sheriff Zylak Caused Barricade to Extend Several Hours St. Mary's Sheriff David Zylak arrived at the scene of a standoff at Burke's Trailer Park in California on Monday Nov. 22 and caused the desperate barricaded man to be empowered with the ability to keep stores closed and traffic on Rt. 4 shut down for several hours longer than what would have been required. Zylak overrode command orders by trained personnel in charge of the negotiations. Lt. John Horne had made the decision to allow the Calvert Swat Team to enter the trailer after lobbing in tear gas and Zylak countermanded the order. Zylak has not been trained in hostage negotiations and he committed a serious error on reversing the decision of an on-scene commander. As a result, traffic was tied up through rush hour and the culprit didn't even have a gun in the trailer. In the end, exactly what had been planned resulted in the peaceful surrender of Thomas Franklin Hill Jr., but four hours later. Police Beat: Warrants served for holiday stays in Hotel St. Mary's |
